LOL! I think that's the greatest problem with trying to promote your mod on these forums. I was hoping that people would like it, but how do you describe it to make sure people actually open your thread and check out what you have to show them? That's so difficult.. Glad I managed to pull you in! ;)
Thanks! Unfortunately some of the paintings, such as 'Rake escapes' are from a completely different period, but I just couldn't find anything that was even close to the timeperiod that managed to evoke that feeling. If you know of any good paintings that have a rider riding away at full speed in a panic, I'd gladly replace it.. (I swear I searched for just about everything on Google, from 'Paul Revere' to 'Rake', 'Highwayman', 'Scarlet Pimpernel', you name it, I tried to find it.. Eventually the 'Highwayman' one paid off, but I'm still not entirely sure about it.. But hey, one out of several dozens.. :P)
It should be as far as I know. I'm not sure if the graphics names are different in the original ui.pack file, but I assume that if uniform retexture mods work for you, this mod shouldn't pose a problem either.. Enjoy! :thumbsup2
Actually, to be honest, I didn't retexture the Indian and Ottoman faction specific event messages, because it was very difficult to find any that fit the same theme. So unfortunately for people who enjoy playing as those factions, this mod is 'European only'.. Maybe at a later date I'll be able to include India and the Ottoman Empire as well..
As far as I know, it is. Because it merely changes the already existing graphics instead of adding any new events, there shouldn't be any interference with existing savegames, or even mods that enhance the gameplay of Empire.
Thanks for the answers. Are you still on track of these bugs that some exchanged pictures don't appear ingame? I'd like to wait until this is sorted out, but then I'll definitely use your mod. :)
Unfortunately, the answer to that question is no at the moment. I've been trying to figure it out and the only thing I can imagine is that something in the load order might be affecting whether the event graphics show up or not.
At the moment I have a few things planned:
- Remove all the mods I have installed and test it out with just my event message mod installed. If it doesn't work then, that means there's no mod interference and the problem has to come from the actual game files itself.
- If that is the case, the only thing I can come up with is backing up the existing ui.pack file, replacing the two events that don't seem to be retextured in the original file and then see if they are retextured in-game.
- If that doesn't work, I don't know what could be wrong and I'd have to ask help from one of the CA guys or girls. If it does work, that might mean that I'd have to upload a new ui.pack and ask people to back up their originals if they wish to use this mod. I don't like that at all, but if it's the only way to get this mod to work, so be it..
EDIT: Interestingly enough, after trying out the second option, it turns out the pre-assassination and pre-sabotage graphics still aren't retextured, even though they're clearly replaced in the original file. That can only mean one thing: there have to be duplicates of these event graphics somewhere else, either in another .pack file or within ui.pack itself that prevents the retextured files from loading. Very confusing and highly irritating.. But unfortunately, it also seems a bit typical of trying to mod Empire: TW..
So, I'm going to keep looking for the following files pre_assassin_eu.tga and pre_sabotage_eu.tga in the .pack files, but if anyone can lend a hand and find it before I do, I'd be eternally grateful! :) Then again, if those two event pics are listed under a different name somewhere else, I doubt any of us can find it.. :( (Unless we can crack the E:TW code and find out where the pics that are being used are actually located, but that seems far fetched..)
I know that technically this is double posting, but I've discovered and corrected the problem and here are the results:

Turns out there were alternate versions for the sabotage and assassination events in the UI.pack. Absolutely brilliant..
The new versions are now up for download below and on the first page. I didn't rename the files, so if you downloaded it in the past few days, you should replace your existing version with this new version.

Enjoy! :thumbsup2
By the way, I've also replaced and changed a few of the existing event pics based on the fact that I wasn't entirely happy with them (the 'Rake escapes' one for instance). I will update the collage on the first page tomorrow..
Thanks for the update:thumbsup2
Very Nice, and well done gentlemen. will download this evening! +Rep
thanks for the update, after work i will give it a try
Very very nice work!!
I adds a lot of atmosphere to the game. It just feels more right. :D
Seriously, this mod should be included in every major one.
Simply splendid. I tip my hat off to you my good man.
Nice idea jarnomiedema! I haven't tried it yet, but I do find the paintings you have chosen really excellent.
It's funny however that some pictures are actually inspired on another theme. The picture with the man in the bath for instance. I have forgotten his name, but I believe he was actually assassinated rather than being the "spy that gets assassinated" during the French revolution. Wasn't he a printer for some revolutionary Parisian paper? However that doesn't really matter. I like this mod and will certainly use it. Thank you jarno.
P.S. Don't forget about the other project.
I love it - thank you.
Thanks for all the wonderful replies, everyone! I'm really glad people like this mod. It's not as spectacular as a gameplay alteration, but I do think it works well to change a bit of the atmosphere in-game.
As promised, here's a list of the changes I made in the version I released a few days ago. I've changed a few of the events I hadn't seen in-game yet, such as 'European Politics' and 'European Crime' and I've even changed the pics for some of the events that aren't actually in-game, mostly in the hope that someone will find a way to add them in..

You're right.. Some of the images I chose required a bit of alternative thinking to how else they could be used. The painting of Jean-Paul Marat's death is one of those examples. In fact, the two most difficult ones to find an example for were 'Rake escapes' and 'Spy assassinated'. So yeah, that was tricky, but a lot of fun..
I keep forgetting to reply to the PM's, don't I? I swear, each time I get one, I test it out, tell myself to reply, then something else comes up and I end up remembering it at the last minute.. Thanks for the reminder! ;)
Your mod looks like a nice enhancement I will give it a go. :) thank for releasing your ideas for starters
Wonderful work, really add alot to the ingame-atmosphere.
When a rebellion is started I get the "Reign of Terror"-picture, though. Quite annoying, since it doesn't fit with the "Rebellion"-message at all. Anyone else having this problem? Solution?
Nice Pictures do you think this picture looks more accurate for death of a general??
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Wolfe being shot at the battle of plains of abraham 1759 and looks historically accurate though :)
That's indeed very annoying. The main problem I had (and still have) with modding this particular part of the game is that these pics are named a certain way and then in-game actually represent something else. Very annoying and very complicated to correct. I'm currently playing a campaign as Great Britain and am looking for all sorts of possible trouble with the mod. I haven't come across a rebellion yet, but I did notice that I hadn't retextured the so-called 'vault' pic, which actually stands for bankruptcy. Now I need to find a pic that represents that as well..
Thanks! Actually, the pic I'm currently using is a different variation for the Death of Wolfe. In fact, it's one of the most well known paintings of a dying general. Unfortunately, with regards to your picture, not only is it quite small, it also looks like it was scanned from a book (two different shades). If you can find a higher resolution pic without those colour problems, I might change it, because I'm not entirely happy with the fact that there are native Americans in the current 'death of a general' graphic.
I take it you have typed in 'death general' on google, cos there are quite a few!

Thanks for those JFC! I'm currently already using the bunker hill graphic for the 'Death of a U.S. General' graphic (aparently there's a seperate event for that). The Austerlitz and Inkerman graphics appear to be outside of the E:TW timeframe, but I really like that 'Death of General Richards' painting. I'll keep it in mind!
As for the Google search, well, since I didn't really have any problem finding the 'Death of General Wolfe' painting, I didn't really do a Google search. And after my post of yesterday I didn't do one either. Thanks for the help! :thumbsup2
