Re: [Preview] Imperium Romanum
These are NOT oval shields. The artist simply could not give their proper round shape.
We have those shields used by our East Frankia troops.
But since Imageshack errased our photos i must make new ones and restore them in Frankia Orientalis preview of ours.

That is a very strange claim.
There are plenty of artist depictions of shields being round, the artist who painted the previously presented shields definitely wanted them not to be round.
It is not hard to draw a circle.
Re: [Preview] Imperium Romanum
Especially as there are other pictures from this period but other regions depicting oval shields.

Those lines are the outer borders of the eye ball, while the black dots above depict the eye lens.

It depicts the Entombment of Christ, the soldiers are just a part of a large relief.

Hmm ok, if the relief is really from that early I can't say anything against it. Its a bit weird though, since Spanish warriors from that time are often still depicted with rather archaic equipment like round shields and pretty voluminous helmets.

Round shields aren't really archaic for that period and even later and helmets are depicted in various ways.
These dudes are also from the period and their coifs look quite encased as well;

Though we are talking about the very end of the mods timeperiod as the earliest guess here.
