In case you were still wondering, the live action scenes are from the film Ran.

Re: ah shogun those were the days
This is the first Total War game but playing in 3-4 islands and with only one nation (Japanese factions) for me is not interesting. Thats why I never care about STW or S2TW. Anyway greetings to the fans of this games and have a nice play there. :)

Wow. Hello? STW's trailer is cribbed from Kurosawa's Ran, which is why no other game trailer even comes close! Thought everyone knew this...

I loved that movie (Ran), and I love this game. Absolute classic.
I wish they had brought back the good old throne room from Shogun 1 to the sequel. with awesome voice acting from Togo Igawa pointing out exerpts from The Art of War. And map on the table where you were actually moving pieces instead of animated armies from RTW onwards.
It really feels a great quality game for that time. And I am having a blast playing it.

I still love Shogun all these years later. I'm playing a Mori campaign right now. I'd almost forgotten how much fun it can be.

I am working on getting the game up and running. I think the only flaws this game had were with the Geisha. Technology has moved on so perhaps others will think of failings by comparison to today's offerings. Gunpowder was actually better handled as a balanced introduction. The number of factions and regions was sufficient. The rock vrs paper vrs scissors interplay for the various units worked. Multiplayer action was possible. What more could one ask for at the time. Thanks for activating m nostalgia juices. Now to get my warlord edition up and running again!

The first 4 games were the best in my opinion. Shogun, Medieval 1 and 2 and Rome. I still play Shogun and it is best played with the expansion aka Gold Edition found on steam.

Re: ah shogun those were the days
I think someone should create a new game based on Shogun/Medieval 1, with all the nice little additions to immersion that have been added so far, with lots of internal management mechanisms to make you feel like a warlord (Nobunaga's Ambition and RoTK), a dynasty management and family tree like Crusader Kings 2 (and ability to play as not just Daimyo but also his vassals), and ability to build stuff in a more customizable and open map like Civilization series.
And then make campaigns based on:
- Heian period
- Gempei War and Kamakura era
- Muromachi period
- Sengoku period
- Edo period
- Bakumatsu
