Finally, after three and a half years since Total War: ROME II's release, you can now experience the good old ROME: Total War intro videos for each faction in the Grand Campaign, but with the visuals of Total War: ROME II. This mod implements remastered ROME: Total War intro videos using footage from Total War: ROME II, made by the Total War Machinima director 'Malay Archer' (check out his YouTube channel, linked on this page).
I wanted to make this mod as proof that the community can implement new video cutscenes ingame and figure out a way to get the audio working (admittedly, it is not the ideal method - I would rather get the audio working ingame without the use of a soundboard, if possible). It is the first mod of its kind in the Total War series.
FUTURE
Since this mod started in mind for the overhaul mod Divide et Impera, there will be one released soon for it along with some extra cutscenes dispersed throughout the grand campaign - not just introduction videos. The first version released here is for vanilla ROME II only. If this mod gains enough interest, we are happy to continue doing more and/or supporting more overhaul mods.
VERSIONS
DIVIDE ET IMPERA
INSTALLATION
1. Download the "Main", "Intro Movies" and "Event Movies" pack files below. Put them into your "data" folder inside the ROME II file directory (basically where all your mods are located). 2. Download the "Audio Soundboard + Files" folder and place it anywhere on your computer (do not move anything out of that folder). 3. Start up the soundboard .exe located in that folder. A window called "EXP Soundboard 0.5" will open up (you need Java version 7 or above for it to open - a warning will pop up if you don't have it). 4. Go to the top left of the window and click on "File". A drop-down menu will appear. Click on "Open" and load the "Benjin_Movie_Event_Cutscene_Audio.json" file. 5. Start the game and wait for a cutscene. Leave the soundboard open. 6. When a cutscene triggered by this mod starts, a countdown timer will appear starting at "X" seconds. Press the indicated audio hotkey (shown at the bottom of the screen) between "IV" and "III" seconds of the countdown for best audio synchronisation (if you decide to skip a cutscene after triggering audio, press the "Pause / Break" key on your keyboard to cease all audio from the soundboard). 7. Enjoy!
INSTALLATION To install the mod and get audio working, follow the instructions carefully in the readme. If anyone has any issues, either make a post here or contact me directly.
I've been working on a cutscene mod for myself when playing Rome II and/or DeI. With the help of GrudgeTheDutchman's intro video framework posted a few years ago, I have managed to get custom .bik videos playing ingame, and managed to find a way to implement audio with them as well through a simple, cheaty method (I'll explain later). So, it'd definitely be possible to make full intro cutscenes for each faction, provided that videos were made for them (thinking of making them myself - mixture of a few ingame shots and Unreal Engine 4 (for the slightly more self-contained / difficult to replicate ingame / custom animated segments)).
However, I was just wondering about one thing - which is why I've labelled this thread as "[REQUEST]" - is it possible to add these custom videos to the text-box event windows (like in Attila), and new video event windows (e.g. Civil War, Family Member Death etc)? If so, I could potentially make more .bik cutscene videos like the ones demonstrated in my quickly put together demo below (these would be the kind of ones I'd do in Unreal Engine 4).
Personally i would love to see this in dei, even if as a submod.

Re: [REQUEST] Event Cutscenes
I imagine the only reason to keep this a submod is that the filesize of the mod is already enormous, which is the reason we have to split it into so many parts on Steam. Otherwise, very cool! :thumbsup2

Re: [REQUEST] Event Cutscenes
That's true, each video would take up quite a bit of space (you can compress them down each to a reasonable size, but when you've got like 30 or 40 of them, it starts to get pretty big), therefore making this ideal as a submod - available for people as an optional download.
But, don't get too hyped up - this is just a demonstration of what I'm asking about; whether or not it's possible to implement custom .bik videos to text-box event windows in Rome II, as you've seen in the video I uploaded (it was done using video editing)? The only thing I've managed to get working so far are the custom intro videos for each faction before a campaign starts (thanks to GrudgeTheDutchman) with a method of implementing sound, which is what has been putting off other people to do this kind of mod before. I know that it is possible in Attila (see link below).

Yeah this is really neat! I honestly don't know about modding this as I haven't looked into it so I couldn't answer your question about in-game cut scenes. In theory a lot of the db files are there, though.

Re: [REQUEST] Event Cutscenes
Hey Dresden, thanks for replying - I guess I'll take a look around some of the db files in Rome II and Attila to try and replicate it with a random custom video when I have time. It might take a while since I'm currently at uni (final year - course ends in May) but in any of my spare time I'll test it out.

Re: [REQUEST] Event Cutscenes
Okay, I still don't know if it's possible for simple messages to have movies played over them, like in my demo video, but I think it might be possible to make new movie events, like "Civil War Erupts!" and "Triumph!" which is just a video on its own in the center of the screen.
So, you need to put your custom video into "video_tables", make a new "movie_event_string" linking to that video with a unique ID at the end of it (any number), then have an incident's payload (reward / outcome) trigger a "MOVIE_EVENT" with the unique ID in brackets at the end of that movie_event_string (e.g. movie_event_string #904, labelled "rome_triumph_1", is linked to the video file "RomeII/triumph_1.bik". "incident_rome_triumph_1" uses "MOVIE_EVENT[904]" as its payload).
Still playing around with it.
EDIT: Going to try and see if I can make a placeholder movie_event trigger on either an "Earthquake" or "Volcanic Eruption".

Re: [REQUEST] Event Cutscenes
Okay, I got it working. I don't know about the scripted cutscenes (like the "Civil War Erupts!" stuff - I think that might be hardcoded... maybe - I tried to look everywhere for them), but I have managed to get incidents to trigger movie events. If custom incidents were created for specific things, then they can have their own movie events tied to them.
I managed to implement new movie events for existing incidents, such as festivals (Lumuria, Ludi Plebeii, Ludi Romani etc), disasters (Earthquakes, Great Fires, Volcanic Eruptions) and certain technological researches using a test .bik video (it's an airstrike .bik movie from the game "Tom Clancy's: EndWar", if you're wondering). You could even have a cutscene for a start of a political incident, and then a cutscene for each outcome of a political incident if you wanted. From what I saw from the "vo_fmv_texts" and "vo_scripts" tables, it's pretty straightforward to add custom subtitles to them as well.
So, all that needs to be done is create actual videos for these events, so that answers my question on whether or not they're possible - they are. I'll start making the intro videos + some of these minor movies after May or June.

Re: [REQUEST] Event Cutscenes
Yeah I wish I could work on them 100% now, but I've got to get my university projects out of the way before starting something big. The way in which I work, when I get focused on doing something, I enter a state of flow that doesn't make me want to stop which can eat into the time of other (usually more important) things - so I'd want to get those things done first, then what I want later.
But while I'm doing my uni stuff, I can at least storyboard the movies so that when I start to do the environments / animations in May, I know exactly what I have to make for each movie scene.
Also, if any of you have ideas for faction intro or incident event movies, share them here.

Re: [REQUEST] Event Cutscenes
Even though I said I wouldn't be working on it until May, I couldn't help myself.
I have the characters + rigs, environment and animation assets from R2 ready to be used in Unreal Engine 4, for unique cutscenes which can't be fulfilled ingame (e.g. senate meetings, character assassinations, city street life etc).
I... might do a shorter cutscene to start off with this week / month, if I find the time again. Maybe do a cutscene for "Colosseum Built" (with a Gladiator fight)? I'll decide later.
I've managed to add in new incidents that can trigger upon certain conditions, which can allow stuff like World Wonder movies to play once the next turn upon taking a specific region ("rom_britannia_dumnonia" for Stonehenge, for example). With this you could also have movie events for constructing new buildings ("BUILDING_LEVEL" incident generator, and choose whichever building you want from the building tree), researching technologies and looooads of other possibilities - you could make a storyline narrative out of them if you wanted (*cough* Hannibal at the Gates *cough* Caesar in Gaul *cough*).
Below is an example of how the movie events will play out - a 10 second intermission to allow the player to get ready to play the hotkey combination to play the custom audio, from the soundboard running in the background of the game (unfortunately, it's the only way to get the audio to work, since we can't add / replace non-music audio in ROME II).
It's not fake like in my first post (the cursor moves over the movie to prove it), and it actually works. The .bik video file size was 15MB, which is reasonable.
Movie Event Mod (WIP) - Wonder Captured - Stonehenge
The actual Stonehenge cutscene bit is not mine - it was made by xtheatron (original link below) - and is just example video of what I'd include for where my video will be. I'll make my own later.

While on the campaign map? I don't think that'd be possible... not sure, I haven't tried it. Then again, if I made all of these movies fullscreen, it'd make the file sizes much bigger (fullscreen-quality videos will be more than quadruple the file size). I do know that it's possible to have custom intro movie events though, and they are fullscreen.
On that topic, I wonder if it's possible to have custom ending movie events? If so, I would love a slightly edited version (i.e. get rid of the scenes with Mark Antony, frozen Spartan and Cleopatra committing suicide) of this trailer playing for the Rome faction's Caesar in Gaul campaign ending (instead of that dull, vanilla ending you always get).
... or this for a scripted event of Hannibal's army crossing the alps in Hannibal at the Gates...
... possibilities for movie events to add more cinematic narrative is almost limitless. I'd strongly encourage any Total War Machinima directors to do some videos which could fit with this mod, then more of them could be implemented (they would need to try to match the aesthetic style of Rome II, otherwise they'll feel off, so that means no over-use of GEM / After Effects... especially blurs, they can easily destroy the look of most videos if not carefully used).

Re: [WIP] Movie Event Mod
Here's the second and last movie event test - the Necropolis of Giza (Pyramids). I wanted to see if the cutscenes played even after the first turn as a faction who already owns a wonder, and it still works. I made one tiny mistake, though... I set the movie event reference to "Alexandria", when it's meant to be at "Memphis" (Alexandria is supposed to have the "Pharos of Alexandria" (aka Great Lighthouse) wonder movie event instead).
All of the "Wonder Captured" incidents have been implemented into my mod's DB files - now they just need new videos. I'll start making my own videos of Stonehenge, the Pyramids, as well as all the other wonders in the Grand / Wrath of Sparta campaigns some time next week. Once that's done, I'll then upload a DeI and vanilla version for everyone to use / take a look at.

Re: [WIP] Movie Event Mod
Yes, I tested those out as well and they worked 100%.
Eventually I plan to do faction intro cutscenes as well to the Grand Campaign - I imagine that they'll first be by culture + subculture groups to fill the gap of there not being any intro cutscenes (Roman, Carthaginian, Egyptian, Greek, Barbarian, Eastern), but then later on maybe doing one for each individual faction. I don't know yet how they'll be planned out, but I would like them to be sort of in the style of Attila's. I'd need to sit down and properly storyboard them, and write up what lines the narrator would say.
EDIT: I remember a month ago I was thinking about them, I wrote up a bunch of notes for what I'd want to be the general formula for an intro video with some very rough ideas for narrator dialogue. If anybody wanted to write proper dialogue scripts for the narrator then by all means, do so - it'd speed things up for me.
Quote:
ROME II - INTRO VIDEOS
DIALOGUE - Repeating pattern
1. The year (272 BC)
2. Their history
3. The world map (situation - zoom out from capital location)
4. What they're good at (family clan, unit specialities etc)
5. Final speech (the future)
INTRO - PROLOGUE (for all factions, plays before the proper faction intro starts) - Generic Narrator
1. The year
• "The year is 272 BC"
• "The world is splintered... fragmented..."
• "Many tribes... kingdoms... republics... vie for domination..."
• "It awaits the arrival, of an empire... " - foreshadows the events that will occur under your rule; your victory goal is to form a gigantic empire
ROME - Julii
1. (map zoom into capital location on map, current territory fading in, transition to cinematic renders of civilian life in typical city?)
• "The Romans"
2. Faction history
• Etruscans - Former masters, formation of the Republic ("much to the boasting of the Junii")
• Pyrrhus - Faced hard times, recently driving Epirus away from Beneventum 3 years ago
• Samnites + Magna Graecia - Conquered
3. The world map (situation, zoom out from capital)
• "The Romans are beset from all sides" (Surrounding (known) factions, highlighted red enemies)
• "The Etruscans blah blah blah" - currently at war, they're decadent and weak
• "The Barbarians blah blah blah" - mention them being a priority if playing as the Julii (Barbarian Subduers)
• "The Greeks blah blah blah" - mention Epirus + Macedon?
• "And worst of all... the Carthaginians. For Rome to rule the Mediterranean, Carthage *must* be destroyed."
4. What they're good at
• Sword infantry
• "The house of the Julii reign supreme in the Senate..."
• Barbarian subduers (morale bonus)
• Romanisation (conversion bonus)
5. Final speech
• "Romans, the sons of Mars blah blah blah, must have a strong frontier, if they are to survive."
• "They will not let stuck-up Carthaginians, pompous Greeks, or stinking Gauls to stand in their way!"

Re: [WIP] Movie Event Mod
I have the tools (except for my own motion capture equipment - I'll just have to animate each custom animation one key frame at a time, or borrow / hire out a friend's motion capture equipment...) and the knowledge - what I lack is time at the moment. I don't need a voice actor for the narrator yet - I'd at least like all of the dialogue written up first, and maybe finish a few videos, and then decide what kind of voice I'd want.
I could do a mod which used the original Rome: Total War intros, but... I'd say that'd be a bit lazy, and wouldn't really fit with the look of the rest of the game? Maybe versions remade with Rome II visuals, but keep the audio intact would be better? Either way, I'd like to eventually do some of my own videos to maintain the integrity of the vanilla's aesthetic.

ABOUT
Finally, after three and a half years since Total War: ROME II's release, you can now experience the good old ROME: Total War intro videos for each faction in the Grand Campaign, but with the visuals of Total War: ROME II.
INSTALLATION
To install the mod and get audio working, follow the instructions carefully in the readme (it should take about 2 or 3 minutes). If anyone has any issues, contact me.

But don't worry, I'm currently working on a version for Divide et Impera and will upload it some time tomorrow - the mod will be available for DeI as intended, just requires a bit more time. The DeI version won't just be new intros - it will also have a few extra cutscenes on the campaign map (e.g. when the Roman military reform events occur, a unique video will play for each - also made by Malay Archer).

Bugger. Maybe in the future lord Gaben's Steam will provide this to us :shifty: I just remember how cool it was to have clips from the movies in Third Age... This could be cherry on the cake for DeI  And yes i know its only cosmetic

Re: [Submod] Movie Events + Campaign Intro Video Mod
Malay Archer has uploaded the three Roman Reform movie event cutscenes which will be included into the DeI version (coming when 1.2 is officially released, since it's coming out in just a few days?). They will play on the campaign map like the "Family Member Death" and "Civil War Erupts!" movie events.

Re: [Submod] Movie Events + Campaign Intro Video Mod
Yeah its really great! I do wish we could eventually add it to the main mod but it would basically be the size of the mod almost itself :) But making it a submod is at least a good way to have it available to those who want to use it in DeI.
Eventually we want to put together an HD/MOAR TEXTURES RAAAHH type submod that has a bunch of extra assets and things that would be there for those with computers that can handle it. Maybe this is something that also could be included in that eventually? Sort of a compilation submod of some of the good ones out there and improved/variation of textures

Re: [Submod] Movie Events + Campaign Intro Video Mod
Hi KAM / Dresden, thanks!
About the idea of this submod being incorporated as part of a list of officially endorsed DeI submods with large file sizes (for those with computers able to handle it) - that sounds like an awesome idea to me! Malay Archer and myself (I plan to make some videos as well, since my time at university is now over) can use some of those HD textures / extra assets for the videos. If we need to, we can re-make some of the existing videos too (we need to fix some of the scenes with the wonky shadows any way).
Yeah, it is a shame about the filesize - I tried to compress each of the 1920x1080 intro videos down to at least 100mb from 600mb, plus the audio not being implemented ingame and needing to be played separately, but it still works for those who have always wanted to have some extra presentation / immersion to their campaigns. Then again, intro / ending cutscenes are always going to have the largest file sizes - the campaign movie events can be compressed down to around 30mb since those videos won't be fullscreen.

If you do plan on doing a higher quality sub-mod and include the movie intro for it, could you make the videos look better? I'm the same guy from the steam comment who posted this http://imgur.com/a/jqu3o. I'd be happy to download an extra big file from TWC if it looked better in game.

@Huoshan Malay Archer and myself have decided to get all of the reform cutscenes done before releasing, so it'll take a little while longer. We still have to do the Greek, Gaulic, Germanic, Iberian, Nomadic, Carthaginian and Parthian reforms. I'm also going to throw in something extra for Hannibal at the Gates... you'll see what it is when you get to turn 7 in the winter of 218BC.
@skullfultree As a separate download linked on TWC, sure! I just figured nobody would want to download such a massive file size with lossless .bik movies. Currently it's at 600mb, if I made an even higher-quality movie mod, it'll probably increase to 1.8GB.

As I said earlier in this thread - I was only dreaming about submod like this for DEI and then I saw your thread. Many thanks! Dresden idea is really great. Honeslty I don't think it is even a problem for anyone in 2017 to download 1.8 GB of awesome stuff. Please, make a high and mid quality videos if it not a very much time consuming for you.

@Polemaios Thanks for linking this, completely forgot to do so!
@suras333 Hi, Malay Archer and myself are currently doing a few extra videos for the DeI version - once they're done, I will immediately upload the DeI version to Steam + TWC and create higher quality versions of the mod (larger file sizes) for TWC shortly afterwards. Yesterday we finished the Parthian and the secret HatG cutscene.

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates for the past couple of days from myself - I've been busy on real life stuff and another ROME II project I'm testing the waters on at the moment using some awesome software I got last week. The DeI version will hopefully be done by the end of the week if nothing else gets in the way.

I made an Imgur album with bugs since Twcenter's Pictures server are so slow.

Re: [Submod] Movie Events + Campaign Intro Video Mod
Hey guys, thanks for being patient. I'm sorry that things are taking a while - real life has been getting in the way a little bit, and I'm still trying to figure out how to spawn armies on the campaign map when it reaches a specific turn time as a non-Carthaginian faction for HatG.
The reason I want to do that is basically this - the secret cutscene I wanted to add was an edited version of the "Find A Way" trailer (I will upload and link it soon - I made some campaign paper map animations using After Effects to replace the ingame campaign map footage from the original trailer - it wouldn't make sense aesthetically to have footage of the ingame campaign map when you're already on the ingame campaign map). At turn 7, I wanted the cutscene to play along with two stacks of attritioned Carthaginian armies (ideally lead by Hannibal Barca and Mago Barca) spawning in the Alps as a way to force the Carthaginians to attack from northern Italy, which would provide a bit more immersion to the HatG campaign and kick start the Second Punic War coming to the Roman's territory. I think it'd make the game way more interesting for Roman players since Carthage / Hannibal never really decides to attack you properly in Italy - you're always the one coming to them in Sicily / Iberia / Africa (or murdering the other factions, such as Massilia / Syracuse).
If I don't get that part of it done in the next couple of days I'm just going to skip it for next time, but it would be great if I could get it done.

Here's something small to keep you waiting just a little longer. I'm currently working on four After Effects map animations to replace the ingame campaign footage of CA's "Find A Way" trailer for ROME II, just to make the overall look + feel of the video to match SHOGUN 2's / ATTILA's (it's wouldn't make sense to watch campaign footage while you're already on the campaign map. Plus, that campaign footage is really out of date).

Re: [Submod] Movie Events + Campaign Intro Video Mod
Well I got the new After Effects map animations done for the re-edited version of CA's "Find A Way" trailer (you can see it working ingame in the new demonstration video linked below).
I also found a cool way of compressing the bink videos - I managed to take down this cutscene, originally from 350mb (the longer + more colours + higher resolution + more frames there are in a video, the larger the file size will be - this one was going to have a lot of colour information since it's around 3 minutes long and has lots of different locations), to just 60mb with hardly any loss in quality compared to the 350mb version. I'll be doing this with the other videos on the Steam Workshop version as well.
It's taking a while because I may need some help with scripting for the DeI reform cutscene timings (I could easily make it play on a certain turn time, but sometimes it can change based on Imperium / when the player researches the techs which will allow reforms?) and the armies to spawn with LUA for this cutscene. Scripting isn't really my specialty so I'm extremely slow at it. If anyone can help with that then it'd be greatly appreciated - the DeI version of the mod would be released waaaay faster.
