Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
634 AD, the Sassanid & Roman Empire faces a new enemy - the Rashidun Caliphate.
Previous years before, the Romans and Persians have fought against each other to the bones.
In the shadow of this clash, Mohammed and his followers built a ground for the expansion,
which now starts. After Mohammed died, Abu Bakr was the first successor. Now Omar
is the leader of the Rashidun Caliphate, and he has an ambitious goal, a Caliphate, from the pillars
of Hercules to the mountains of modern iran. Furthermore he wants that culture prospers, but
also that religious minorities should have a right to practice their religion.

Features:
- over 50+ new units
- islam as a new religion
- exciting new starting date: 634 AD
- unique gameplay for steppe factions
- historical accurate family trees
- historical characters like Herakleios, Omar, Uthman and many more

The promotion map is still WIP so maybe, we will add some factions.

Nice to see you made a new thread, by the way are you going to use some AOC skins for the Islamic units?

This isn't really an accurate depiction of the early Caliphate. Most evidence points towards the early Islamic empire being a strongly ethnic empire organized around expanding the power and wealth of the Arabs who participated in the conquests. If the Umayyad period is anything to go by, that was really the only concern of the early conquerors. Sure, they treated minorities pretty well, and culture flourished even in the early days, but you're painting an overly-rosy picture of the motivation of the early Caliphate (not that the Romans or Persians were any less self-concerned).
Will there be any mechanic to represent the rise of the Umayyads? If this has the same time scale as Attila, we should be leaving the Rashidun period pretty quickly.

sorry, meant will there be a steam link. my bad.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
@Fraxinicius: Yes, you are probably right, but all of this summary is really overstated.. I think that it is clear, that a Empire -like the Rashidun Caliphate- in the Dark Ages was not something like a secular state. :laughter: Either way this mod is 12 TPY so maybe it is possible that an event changes the name "Rashidun Caliphate" to "Umayyad Caliphate" (but for this I need somebody, who can make scripts). Furthermore the first caliph of the umayyad dynasty "Mu'waiya" is also in the mod.
@Moon_Man: Yes, I reskinned the Frankish/Visigothic/Langobardic roster with AoC armour, and the Sassanids are also reskinned. The Rashidun Caliphate units are halve reskinned and renamed, the other halve just reskinned, with armour of AoC.
@metafish13: Yes, I will upload it on steam, and maybe an other upload page.
Hopefully, this clarified some questions.

that is the process known as the second fitna, or the great Shia-Sunni divergence, wich might be a bit sensitive to some. It occurs after the fourth Rashidun Caliphs, Utmans family, the ummayads have nestleded themselves into powerful positions in the provinces of the former roman east. Then as Ali after Uthmans death finaly is made Caliph, the powerful ummayads assert themselves as their own caliphate (+ a guy ruling Egypt being a bit neutral), furthermore throughout the empire a group know as the Khawarij gain land and control, a group of radical islamic rightists who first take the recent incention of military Jihad (made by Omar to justify his conquests) to mean extermination of all non-muslims, and muslims who don't follow their teachings. Perfect for a civil war campaign, although already the armies were quite changed, also in the Byzantine empire.
As for the treatment of non-arabs I agree, of course in the local Persian tradition they weren't brutalt represed, but largely absent from government, except for example in Tabaristan where the Arabs instead of conquering the local pre-islamic dynasties made them vassals. An interesting note is the dual meaning of thr contemporary (right?) word Mawali, refering both to non-Arab islamc converts, and friends in general, but also subjects, and even slaves

Well, I don't think anyone is putting out their public names and addresses here, so I don't think there should be any problem in trying to represent things as long as it reasonably follows reality within the constraints of the game.
Personally, I'd love a system that lets you choose between either side, switching up the characters in the family tree to the appropriate faction, and then have the other revolt in a civil war... would probably require a lot of scripting to do that right, though. At the very least, I think it would be preferable to rename the main Islamic faction to simply "The Caliphate", or "Arab Empire". Rashidun really only makes sense for the idealized early rulers, and in-game the player is almost certainly going to be taking the empire past that point, and into the period where the normal, dirty processes of history come into play.
Another chain for the Kharijites would be great too. But then it's easy to talk as a 3rd party about what would be cool, when I don't have to worry about developing anything.

Umar's last wife, Ummu Kultsum is Ali's daughter - But one of Umar's daughter from his previous wife was one of Muhammad's wife. And Ali is the Prophet's son-in-law. Okay, how should we call this kind of relationship, and depict it in a family tree?
The Caliphs of the Khulafaurrashidin was appointed by a Shura representative of the Ummah by consensus. Abu Bakr, Umar bin Khattab, and Uthman bin Affan weren't the Prophet's descendants. One of the point of schism was, Is the Imam should be the direct descendants of the Prophet? In later times, the Shia followers believes that Ali bin Ali Thalib, as the Prophet's son-in-law, should be the true Imam, and the appointment of previous Caliphs were unlawful.
How to script the Fitna between the Ummayads and Ali supporters? How to depict how the radical Khajarites kill their own Caliph Ali because he's not as confrontational to the Ummayads as they hoped? How to depict the Ummayads rise to power and political machinations? How to depict the lingering animosity between Arab tribes now united by Islam, for instance between Banu Ghassan and Banu Lakhm? How to simulate the disgruntlings of Arab Tribesmen that they cannot cling on their old Jahiliyyah tribal war customs of war plunders, against the new Caliphate order? and so forth. Its tricky for us modders and players of Attila to relive all of that.

It is frowned upon for the production of images of The Prophet in Islam out of fear of people worshipping Mohammad's image instead of Allah's. Muslims have kept a policy of iconoclasm since the eighth century. Also it's just less work for the devs.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Completely forgot to mention Konstantinos as a historian in the team, he is basically the backbone for our research. I want to give him the credit he deserves.
thank you Konstantinos :thumbsup2 (he often changes his name.. but he is well known in the twcenter forum)

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
This is very true, sorry let me introduce myself I am the historian on this mod and out others Iustinianus Augustus-Restitutor and Origio Europae.
There are a few details I would like to raise, but have been away. For example the Christian Arabs in the northern peninsula Monophysites and Nestorians.
But we shall endeavour to make this important epoch as historically detailed as the game will allow.
There is still so much I wish to do as an Historian on our last mod Iustinianus Augustus-Restitutor.
Any historical questions ecclesiastical or political ask and I will endeavour to answer.
To those who are Orthodox I hope you a blessed Lent while we wait Pasha

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Majorian: It wasn't called the ''Kushano-Hephthalite kingdom'', but just simply the ''Hephthalite Kingdom''. Furthermore, why also not make a faction for Merv under Mahoe Suri as a Sasanian vassal :D?
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
@TheShah: Yes, you are right :thumbsup2 I think I have already added a Mahoe Suri, as a general in the eastern part of the Sassanid empire. Dont want to add factions in the east, because there are already so many factions, and the Rashidun Caliphate shouldnt be overthrown by generic Sassanid factions. Either way, we will release this mod probably next weekend and I will preview some factions, which faction should be the next? :laughter:

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Why aint the Khazars playable in the game??? And I think Makuria should be made playable instead of Aksum because Aksum never came in direct confrontation with Islam
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
I will make the Khazars playable in a newer update, for the start the arent playable, because I focus on the current playable factions. Today, I will preview the Romans (Byzantines) and the Rashidun Caliphate :)
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
This is looking great, like all your earlier mods. This could be sensitive territory, but do-able if scripting allows the fitna to be represented through civil war/separatist factions.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Why is the emperor of the romans dressed as a petty king when he should be covered in gold and emeralds or at least dressed in military attire?
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
@zig&sharko: I will release it today in a few hours.
@LordVader: I dont see why this subject should be sensitive. If somebody really has a problem that I make a mod of a successor caliph, they really have a boring live tbh. On the other hand, if somebody tries to make white supremacist propaganda on the steam page I will delete it. But as far as I have seen on steam and twcenter nobody has a problem with it, in the end it is a mod.
@juanplay: Well, I will change it if you make the textures for it
@djangoo: No not really but here are the factions with DLC
Samo's Empire, Sclaveni - Slavic DLC
Danes - Viking DLC
Axum - Desert DLC
for the other you dont need any dlc
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
I was thinking you could use the last roman DLC assets, especifically Justinianīs armor that should be in the gameīs files.
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Why does Sindh use Tanukhid faction symbol??? And also r there going to be new Islamic units for Rashidun Caliphate???Why are the franks playable as a single faction. Weren't they divided into Austrasia and neustria during that period???Will Makuria be made playable???Also I think the Gokturks should be present as a horde in the game. Also the Bulgar's religion should be Tengrism instead of Zoroastrianism.I hope you will address these in the next update
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
We use the Tanukhid Separatist Symbol, which fits the faction well in my opinion. I renamed and reskinned the Units of the Rashidun Caliphate, which was the Garamantian Unit Roster. The Franks was in this time divided into Neustria, Austrasia, Burgundy and Aquitania (Duchy of Bavaria was more or less a satrapy) as you see in our first screenshots we wanted to divide them into this factions, but after some playthroughs I felt like it is very boring to play Neustria, because your options are so limited. So I merged Austria and Neustria and Burgundy into the Frankish Kingdom with Bavaria and Aquitania as Duchies. Dagobert I was King of all Franks from 629 - 634, but Austrasia was ruled by his son Sigebert III, his other son Clovis II was King of Burgundy and Neustria. The Frankish Kingdom would be difficult to reflect. I think one single faction with 2 duchies much more enjoyable. The Gok Turks have new units, but are settled, I dont want hordes wandering arround. The Bulgar religion was a mix of Zoroastrianism and Tengrism, but their temples looked like Sassanids ones. Either way it isnt very important because you easily convert to tengri. Hopefully this was enough :)

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Well mate you answered all my questions except about Makuria being playable or not???Regarding Islamic Caliphate units you could have added Tanukhid and Lakhmid units into it as well as it would have fitted historically. Also I think the Sindhis were Buddhists at this time as were the Kushano-Hepthalites. Also I hope that you release a non-steam link for this mod download as well.
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Is possible to add a non-steam link too? Please
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Great mod, but there are some errors: Rostam and Farrukhzad weren't that disloyal, in fact they were Yazdegerd's most loyal generals. Furthermore, Farrukhzad was younger than Rostam. And why aren't the Rashiduns at war against the Byzantines and Sasanians? Furthermore, Merv was a Sasanian outpost at the time, not Hephthalite. The Hephthalites controlled Herat at that time, while the Kidarite Kingdom had been destroyed some time ago.
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
EDIT: Ops, they are actually at war, my bad. But please think about the other things I said.
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
EDIT: And Caucasian Albania isn't a Sasanian puppet state in the game, which it should should be, since the kingdom first declared independence under Javanshir in 637/8.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
I've only given it a glimpse I admit but just wanted to make a sliiiiiiiiight criticism.
I'm a little disappointed that we don't have a native British faction, it also annoyed me slightly that both Wessex and Northumbria still had the Viking raiders trait given that they were surely quite settled by then.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Thanks for this mod! I tried playing with the Roman Empire but it looks like no building provides you with recruitable units. Could you have a look into this?

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Hey Majorian, this is more a question regarding the uh, majorian mod. But basically the Huns all marched into Italy and camped 5 armies outside ravenna, one by virunum, two by mediolanum and one by octovadorum (definitely wrong spelling...) so I gathered a field army and declared thus wiping out the 5 outside ravenna within one turn. The huns then went from strength ranking 3 to 6. Then next turn I destroy the two by mediolanum and chase the other two which I destroy the following turn. Next turn....their strength ranking is back to 3 and two armies appear near virunum again. So I destroy one of those before the following turn 4 more armies show up.
So, do the Huns just auto generate stacks of troops? Because this is wierd....
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
to Majorian: I do not understand your conception...why exactly you made Exarchate of Ravenna and Cartage like independed territory from Constantinople?
It bove was part of Byzantine land not "puppet state"
Also I thing at my opinion you'd throw inside mod too much infrantry troops.Cavalry is very less-thats about recruting system Byzantine.Cavalry were decided on the battle ground...

I think that is a very smart way around it - it is true, the exarchates were to all effects provinces of the empire; at the same time, the exarchs enjoyed a great degree of independence as they headed both the provincial armies and the civilian administration. in fact, their power could represent at times a threat - Heraklios himself was the son of a rebellious African exarch who set of to topple the imperial government. in the period covered by the mod, both exarchates proved hard to control: Gregory exarch of Africa rebelled in 646/47, and Olympios exarch of Italy in 652. Both died fighting Arab incursions into their domains. so, all in all I think that representing them as client states (basically parts of the empire that could or could not provide military support, depending on the political situation) is entirely fair - well done!
-

Yes, I will add you to the group. Maybe you could tell what your steam name is.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
This mod definitely needs more improvement. Firstly Rashidun Caliphate needs more unique units for example Quarysh Champions, Bedouin Raiders,Rashidun Heavy Cavalry etc . PLEASE add new units to it like you added to Avars or other factions.Renaming and reskinning is not enough. Nobatia at this time ceased to exist. It was annexed by Makuria so Nobatia should be replaced by Makuria. The Magyar Family tree is messed up. Is it possible to introduce new religion becoz Sindh should be either Hindus or Buddhists and NOT Zoroastrianism. Is it possible to add Chapter adjectives like Vanilla Campaign because that would have been great. And why do the Khazars use Persian names???Also e please remove recruitable Persian mercenaries in the Magyar territory and if possible add new recruitable mercenary units from new cultures like Slavs, Huns or Hepthalites.

@huascar: "Renaming and reskinning is not enough" well, you have a normal roster like a free DLC, dont see what should be a problem, but your units names are noted. No, I cant introduce a new religion, you have to add so much things like buildings and so on, maybe I can change religion "Minor Religions" to Buddhism/Hinduism... As I already said for chapters you need a scripter, and I dont know somebody who can do that. Furthermore I dislike if somebody uses "?????" to express oneself :whistling

Well I meant that the Rashidun Caliphate needs more units. The current unit roster is not enough. It lacks heavy melee infantry units. Maybe you could add new units like Banu Hashim Heavy Infantry and Quarysh Tribal Champions. It also lacks good archer units and some of the unit names I noticed still use the original Garamantian names. Also the Khazars,Kidarites and Gokturks should be Tengri and not Zoroastrianism although the Khazars later became Jews. And their faction leadr portrait should be Hunnic and not Eastern. And I honestly think that the Bulgars starting religion should be Tengri you can check wikipedia. And the Magyar family tree needs to be redone becoz when I opened the family tree all I saw were portraits of Anthony and Cleopetra:laughter: And one question why did you even made the Magyars playable instead of more deserving factions like Khazars, Gokturks and Makuria(u still r silent on Makuria:tongue:). I mean Magyars weren't even relevant for that time period. Also for the British factions like Northumbria, wessex and alt clut could u use units from AoC instead of a generic Nordic roster???

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
I am very interested in this mod. I have it downloaded and started a campaign as the Roman Empire. I don't seem able to raise troops. I can hire mercenaries, but in trying to raise my own forces, the box is completely empty of options. Is there some change with the mod where troops can't be raised the same method as in Attila?
Thanks

EDIT: Sry, was pretty tired when i wrote that post. Thought this is about a 6th century Justinian mod. So yeah, replacing Nobatia with Makuria is definetly legit. If they weren't merged at 634 AD already Makuria was atleast the stronger one.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Hey Majorian, I love your mod and played many hours with the Sassanid Empire. But now some criticism:
I can't understand these logic: In your project "Rise of Islam" you've made the Frankish empires of Austrasia, Burgundy and Neustria which fought each other and now in "Herakleios: War of Three Faiths" you've ignored history and unite Franconia. But why? The Merowingian Brotherwar (How it's called in Germany) is also a war of three "Faiths".

I agree , Franks were never united during this period, but divided into separate ,rival kingdoms. I've noticed in the majority of my playthroughs, that the Franks are a bit OP, they easily smash Samo's Empire, and they are a bit too easy to play as, as they can steamroll any enemy fairly easily. Dividing them into Austrasia and Neustria makes sense, as in History even though he inherited a united Frankish ream, he faced rebellion from the disgruntled nobility of Austrasia led by Pepin of Landen in 632 AD due to neglect, and he appointed his son,Sigebert III, a three year old, to the throne in 634to appease the Austrasians thereby being left with the thrones of Neustria and Burgundy. So by the time of the mods start in 634 AD, Austrasia and Neustria should be separate realms, separate but with an alliance of some kind
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
great mod!! you did a fantastic job! Is it possible to add the building chain of the franks from the last roman dlc to the mod? Also would it be possible to add all of the aoc units to the franks, lombards, mercia, wessex and avars?
-
Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
It needs version 1.6.0, the Garamantian update.

I have a lot of research covering this period which I am happy to share with you (as well as pictures of recent numismatic stuff from this period :P)
I think you should post what you have, since in general I think it's a bit difficult to find any accurate information regarding the early Muslim armies, and 600-ish era Roman and Sassanid armies aren't usually covered in that much detail either. I don't know if this mod is still being worked on, but it might still be an interesting read if you posted a "general overview" of the armies of the period or something along those lines.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Want to do a reskin submod for this at some point, such a cool time period.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
I think Rashidun needs some powerful very light chargers from the Tanukhid roster.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
I'm also curious to know if this mod still has someone working on it. I tried it out for the first time a short while ago and it looked promising. What news do we have on this? I might be interested in chipping in at a later time if such a thing is needed.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
I am currently playing this as the ERE on Very Hard. So far I've been enjoying it, but I've come across what appear to be pretty blatant bugs that are detracting from that enjoyment.
1) If you build "Wheatfields" then you'll LOSE food! I noticed this when I upgraded a field to a Wheatfield in a province without a food shortage. Upon completion of the Wheatfield, I lost 20 food in that province which triggered a food shortage. It appears Wheatfields are actually losing the amount of food that they're supposed to provide.
2) If you build a 2nd tier military barracks for the ERE then you will no longer be able to recruit some of the units that were available with the 1st tier barracks. For example, upon building an 2nd tier cavalry barracks in Constantinople I was no longer able to recruit: Funditores, Numerous Invictorum, Symachoi Longobards, and Hippo Toxotai. These were all available with just base 1st tier barracks, but disappeared upon completion of the 2nd tier cavalry barracks. I also noticed losing recruitment options upon building the 2nd tier infantry barracks in other provinces. Is this WAD (and if it is then what's the reasoning behind it?) Or is just a mistake?
3) The game has female general models on the campaign map for the Garamantions. (Why do the Garamantions have female generals?) Yet, these models are missing the lower half of their bodies. Obviously, that doesn't look good.
4) The Sword Heerban unit is suffering from a serious graphical glitch on the battle map- their cloaks transform into gigantic, flashing, metallic-looking triangles. It is really distracting.
5) The replay feature doesn't appear to work with battles from this mod. I've suffered repeatable CTDs trying to load replays of the battles that I've fought. (The game appears to finish loading the replay and then it just stops responding prior to reaching the battle map.)
I was really enjoying my campaign. So, I kept playing despite the bugs. I worked around the Wheatfield issue by simply not building them or converting existing ones to sheep or cattle pastures. And I worked around the barracks' issue by either not building 2nd tier ones or having a nearby 1st tier one so I can keep recruiting base units. Still, I did see how these issues effected the AI because it can't work around them. I saw "starving" AI nations. I also ran into a number of AI armies consisting totally of just one type of unit: all spearmen or all slingers. (I also saw Rebel armies with nothing but artillery units.)
This mod has immense potential, but as of now it appears to be pretty unpolished.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Ive found heaps of bugs, from units not being available for recruitment from any building type, to CTDs, incorrectly named towns etc, and incorrect emergent factions.

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
So I love this mod so much, but I wanted to know - What happened to Iustinianus Augustus-Restitutor Imperii? The mod has just disappeared, are you guys still working on it?

Re: Herakleios: War of Three Faiths
Doubt it. They said it was being merged with this one as the main mod, but even this is bugged beyond being fully playable. There is broken aspects to it that cause crashes when campaign do certain things. Could be turn one, could be turn 101.
