Unless i am mistaken all knightly orders are religious in nature. In modern times people really like degrade knights and medieval europe as a whole.
there were very evil most of the time. i read many books about the "Deutschritter" and like the templars, they convert most of the pagan citizens in prussian and lithuania with the sword!
I think people today have a hard time describing the Teutonic Order...Yes they were religious... Yes they did things that today would be considered as "evil" but, back then the things they did were with religious intent...They were asked to help in the Baltic crusades to convert everyone in the area to the catholic religion and that's what they did...I think if what they did was considered wrong in their time then they probably would have heard about it from the POPE...
I think the crusaders were quite modest against their foe's. pagans who surrendered and converted were relocated to work as peasants in western territory near poland, this often caused trouble when the Order had setbacks and the new converts would revolt again. the pagans on the other hand, sold their prisoners as slaves to the Rus and Mongols, and who they couldn't take with them, they killed... it's weird, this whole war was started because cruel pagan raids on polish peasants, and everybody still assums the pagans were just minding their own bussiness, picking flowers and stroking bunnies, when suddenly the teutonic knights came in and killed the bunnies...
They were religious. Them being "Evil" or "Demonic" is nothing but Soviet or Liberal propaganda. For some reason, the communists and left-wing liberals really hate the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, it wasn't considered "evil" to convert someone by the point of the sword, it was in fact considered the duty of every faithful Catholic and Muslim. The Teutonic Knights did not worship demons. They were under the impression that they are saving the souls of those pagans by converting them to Christianity.
Yep, They were VERY religious in real life. Their Order was compelled to help & protect Christians and to fight the pagans. They were badass, tough as nails, smart and scary but not "evil" as some ppl believe or have been led to believe. Obviously their enemies will say all kind of stuff but i freaking like the Teutonic Knights, as well as the other crusading orders. The Teutonic Order motto: "Helfen - Wehren - Heilen " Help - Defend - Heal
