Tactics something you obviously need in this RPG when waging a war and in particular in a battle. There are 2 tactic forms your "General plan " Which is your overall strategy "I shall take Belgium then march into The Netherlands" And there is "Battle tactics" which is what you'll be doing during the battle.
Since humans are not psychic you will never know what your enemy is doing so you'll either need to know what your enemy did his previous battles or guess very good. Amusing most people are brought here by total war hence the name total war center you should know the basics like flanking, Counter flanking and center advancing.
Flanking,
What you want to do is get one of your cohorts or in large battles and entire legion cut into the enemy side line or/and get behind it thus breaking enemy lines and causing a rout. Got it ?
What you see in the pic is a classic flank the red forces attack the center, you use a reserve unit or a unit already in the line to smash trough the right or left flank and get attack the enemies in the back. Basically you have the lines | | fighting each other in a strait line. one unit takes on the tip and keeps doing that till there are no enemies left.
Classic units to use for this maneuverer are cavalry(be ware of enemy spear units) and normal infantry.
Counter flanking,
In the scenario you are being flanked or are flanked. What you would want to do is sent your cavalry or a reserve unit to charge the enemy flanking unit. If the enemy unit already is in the flanking attack chances are large that you can attack the enemy in the back so that would be an easy kill. Be ware not to expose your own units to much so enemy reserves can take you on.
Center advancing,
Probably the most known tactic.
The battle of Cannae is actually a example of how not to do it but still it is a classic example.
What red does is push the blue lines back. the blue center is giving ground so red commits more troops in the center attack to break the line. Generally the line will break in this fashion and so you actually flank the shattered enemy lines that remain. also this gives a large opportunity to envelop your enemy and completely destroy the enemies army. The danger here is that your enemy is letting his center collapse on purpose and crush you with his flanks so beware!
Enveloping,
Well this is the aim of most commanders this is the most wrongly used tactic. in short you will want to flank both the right and left lines. Important is to not try and break the center while doing this or you will yourself get enveloped. well then it is pretty strait forward you envelop the enemy but always keep a hole in the envelopment. in Sun Tzu's words "To a surrounded enemy, you must leave a way of escape" and "Show him there is a road to safety, and so create in his mind the idea that there is an alternative to death. Then strike."
Like tigers, a tiger that knows he will die will fights ten times harder.
