    Units
Yari ashigaru – 1000 spear men -2000 koku cost -500 upkeep
    Yumi ashigaru – 500 bow men - 1200 koku cost – 250 upkeep
    Ashigaru Arquebus -250 men – 3000 cost - 500 upkeep
    Samurai -200 men -5000 koku -400 upkeep

Samurai can be used in any role for any battle (spear, sword, or cavalry), they will all carry bows, but after firing, you must declare how they will be used.
One samurai unit should easily defeat any ashigaru unit (strategy and rolls still give a chance to the peasants)
Your hired ronin(generals) come with 50 smaurai retainers if you have given them land, and will give bonuses in battle and can specialize in any area (sword/spear, etc.) for extra bonuses.

If your province is attacked you may levy 1000 yari ashigaru, 200 yumi ashigaru, and 100 Samurai from your personal guard.
The battles will depends heavily on strategy, as the opposing sides will not know how the other side is using their samurai.

Perhaps European mercenaries, mainly Portugese arquebusiers could be used as Christian clan mercenaries, and warrior monks as a special Shinto- Bhuddist unit?

Yes this is still a WIP. Europeans? Probably not. Monks yes, but you would need to become like the Ikko Ikki, I would prefer if most armies were samurai, but still have the option of people trying to just swarm other with ashigaru.

It's later that Europeans arrive, aka the Portuguese which we Dutch then route out until the Restoration of mejji.

Not really, because the shogun banned all foreigners. And the Portugese were more prominent. So bye bye dutch from Japan...

And Portugese traded with Japan from tagashima islands for ages.

you really should know your history dude.. We kicked the Portuguese out we even got our own Island to trade with the Japanese until the restoration..
After 1638 none else but the Dutch traded with Japan.

    But this isn't 1638. This is 1545
Get your facts straight, and don't start insulting me about not knowing my history, when what you stated isn't even gonna be relevant for 100 years of gameplay.

    2) you traded with kyushu, not Japan. The shogun didn't want to get directly involved, and you only directly traded with a few clans like the Shimazu.
    So go figure.
And misinterpreting stuff on websites does not qualify as historical knowledge, in your case.
