    Faction Navies
    Names and deployments are up to faction leaders. I haven't found very many sources so much of this is likly to be slightly off. Naval warfare during the period often involved hundreds of ships on either side. This made communication difficult, so each ship captain would be on his own. This would be difficult to implement, I feel, and so I've scaled navies down.

    Surely the Dutch would have more than that? By the early-mid 17th Century, the Dutch had just about the world's strongest navy (though I admit its possible that at the start of the century they didn't have much so if you've got a source then I accept that).

    Also, the Dutch invented the frigate, so they should definitely have atleast the same number of them as everyone else.

    Although the Dutch got the world's best navy later, they are still at war with Spain at game start. You may be right about frigates, however.

    Ok so I've come up with some numbers for shot damage. Feel free to comment, criticize, modify, etc.

    Roundshot:
    Hull damage = d6 x g x 0.15 (low firepower ship does between 2 and 13, medium between 8 and 45 and high from 11 to 68)
    Casualties = d6 x g x 0.1 (low between 2 and 5, med 8 and 30, high 8 and 45)
    Destroys a number of guns = d6 x g x 0.01 (low: 0, 1; med: 1, 3; high: 1, 5)

    Chainshot:
    Reduces speed = d6 x g x 0.15 (low: 2, 14; med: 8, 45; high 11, 68)
    Casualties = d6 x g x 0.05 (low: 1, 5; med: 3, 15; high: 4, 23)

    grape:
    Casualties = d6 x g x 0.2 (low: 3, 18; med :10, 60; high: 15, 90)

    d6 represents a 6 sided dice/random number.
    g = number of guns (for simplicity I just used the stigs ranges and gave low=15, med=50, high=75). Obviously as the battle goes on, guns would get destroyed and therefore firepower will drop.
    Hull strength and speed I used low=100, med=200, high=300

    I hope that all makes sense

    On the whole they look good, though I know next to nothing about the Baltic countries navies at the time, nor the Mediterranean.

    Also, I have a feeling galleys were also used in the Baltic sea (not 100% about that, but I'm sure I've read that somewhere).

    Crap, I was wondering too. I thought you would know.

    Excel damage calculator has been updated... It's actually simple enough that I could do a simple Javascript thing for it, but I have no idea where I'd host it. So for now it's in Excel.

    And here's an updated table...

    Any ideas on range?

    How about roundshot has twice the range of chainshot which has twice the range of grapeshot?

    Sorry I've been absent for so long.

    Nice work on the ships, just a couple of things that I think should be changed.

    -Frigates should have less guns and proably manpower, or galleons should ahve more as frigates tended to be a lot smaller than galleons.
    -I think that Brigs and Sloops were a lot closer than as represented and maybe they should just be combined for simplicitys sake.

    Thats all I can think of for now, great work again. So ideas about my crap?

    Edit: Oh and maybe there could be another heavy warship added? Or maybe it can be added later, especially for the northern factions as I think that they particularly developed them soon enough.

    Just thought of another thing that needs to be discussed about navies and that is their role on the campaign map, for which I have a few questions:

    1)How do we deploy them seeing as there are no 'regions' at sea?
    2)How do they work intercepting other navies/invasion forces?
    3)How far can they move?
  13. The Stig
    The Stig
    @Tim: Hobbes is working on the regions. Blockades are unknown. Movement will be tied to speed, but exact numbers are not yet determined
    @Lemoniser: The ship types represent several classes of ships. Also, if you think of a new ship type, it would be quite easy to include it
