Ok man so you want build a longbow. Well for the length, you generally want one about your size. If anything, get a piece taller than shorter.

As for the type of wood. People tend to say Red Oak because its one of the cheapest.
If your in america i've heard places like home depot stock red oak boards. Or else just go to a timber yard.

My suggestions for the width and depth would be something along the lines of
    2.5cm thick
    4 or 5cm wide.
    The length. You decide.
When you get the wood in its original form, you shouldn't be able to bend it. It should be pretty solid.

What also incredibly important is the rings

Imagine the rings are thin layers which are glued together. If they are on an angle, the layers will just slide off. Ideally you would want a board there the lines go horizontally

bowyering and archery so far. That video will just roughly outline some of the steps. But i'll eplain them in more detail once you've got the materials

    Wait a bit...

Wouldn't a strong piece of wood do??? I doubt people here would even know a Red Oak.
And I cannot tell them I am making a longbow.
Bows were banned around 1870s I believe, by the British Empire. I have no idea if that law has changed...

What tools do I need, I can do with simple carpentry tools, exclusive little tricky to get.

na. Only hardwoods. Softwoods are horrible for building bows. Though if you have any other type of wood whcih you can get your hands on, if you can identify it i can tell you weather it will be good or not. If you watch the video i put up you'le see a pine longbow at the end which i made.
If you go to a timber yard they'le know what red oak is. If not try white oak. If they don't know then your in the wrong place.
Bows are allowed in historical reinactments arnt they over there? Over here in Nz we have these groups of people who dress up in metal armour and that and basicaly fight each other. They allow bows as long as they are under 40lbs.
You could say you are making a bow for that.
You could also say you are making 2 bows for your kids
Dont tell them anything if you want

But doing a quick google search i believe its only illegal to hunt with one. And i'm sure theres nothing wrong with a target practice bow. Just don't put broad heads on your arrows.
If you really want to. Make a shortbow. It's at least more concealable.

As for tools. For the bare minimum. You will probably want A surform rasp. Any rasp will do i suppose but a stanley surform rasp is prety much build for this sort of work. Also you will need some sort of knife. A craft knife with those disposable blades will do. Sandpaper. Fine and coarse.

A bandsaw or hand held jigsaw power tool make it a lot quicker but they do carry a risk which is rushing the job. For beginners its recomend you stick to good old hand tools.

    I have no kids.
But also, the fact that I live in a clogged city. Hunting is out of the question, only backyard practice possible.
But no, reenactments and theater groups needs license here, even then, warfare topics are rare.

So, I'll try get a wood.
I'll post pics of it, you can tell me if it is good.
