Welcome to the Wheel of Time group. This was suggested by False Dragon and I thought it a great idea. I say we get a thread going for each book (maybe?). I know some of us have read them all and some are in the middle of the series. Lets try not to spoil it for anyone, so please title threads appropriately and be cautious with your post.
Thanks for the invite. I met three readers recently, and I'll tell you the names: Borissomeone Formann ShADoW
Hello everyone
Hey ShaDoW and FD! Merry Christmas False Dragon - it is a public group so anyone else just tell them to join. I did invite Boris and Formann. Shadow is a friend and as you can see has found his way here.
I'm surprised no one thought of this before! What a great idea, oh and hello!
Hi guys! Nice idea to start a group, Im more addicted to these books than I ever have been to anything else. They are amazing!
Just started reading book 13 and already I can't stop! And happy new years.
Well, I started a new series, but I'm flying through it. Afterwards I'm getting back to this though. It's called "The Eyes of God Trilogy". Good so far.
Thnx for the invite havent been here much lately but i do like to drop in once in a while
Welcome Tsarsies! I was wondering when you would finally show up. After all you're making a mod on it.
im not making a mod on it... i merely offered to assist with scripting and ended up joining the team. But im not leading any team as i dont have the time for that kind of commitment. Im not even able to make progress on the mod i was working on (DotC). If someone did take up leadership on the Wheel of Time i would certainly get back into it and assist with scripting. As i think that mod idea has one of the most interesting scripted events possible. Especially the Horn of Valere script i started putting together. The only problem i see with putting a team together is finding dedicated modders. There are many modders out there, and a lot i am sure would provide assistance and thier own work if progress was shown to be made... The problem though, that i see with this community is that the only progress they will recognize is that of unit models. I could throw together some of the fanciest scripts this community has ever seen and it wont lift an eyebrow. You could put together the most detailed EDB, fleshed out and everything, have all the text files completed, even have a completed map. And it would do nothing to raise interest in the community without models or new skins. What you need is a modeler and skinner. Without that u have nothing. That is why my personal mod DotC has pretty much died and it will never see the light of day. That and, well, lets face it, M2TW is now an old game. Not there that are many games out now that can challenge it, but there are a few made of its kind. I wouldlove to see a mod team working on the Wheel of Time and id jump aboard just like i have in about 3 reincarnations of it thus far. But i do not have the time to commit to a leadership role. Unfortunately... if i could model and skin, id think of it... .
Do you know of any modelers or skinners that are out there? What exactly would leading this mod involve? I'm fairly new to the whole idea of modding.
I know a couple, but they also understand the size of the task at hand. It is a huge undertaking. And their interests are not always for the wheel of time. I don't think the leader of a mod needs to know how to mod, but understanding what is required to make a release is! so that planning and delegation can be done properly. A leader who is already respected would help greatly, but not necessary. Someone who has a lot of time on thier hands, not just now, but for months in advance is a must. If the leader gets caught up with real life issues, the team will give up. Which is what happened to the last team... There are a few modders willing to jump aboard any team that is formed (myself and Y2day for example), and im sure others would join any team that has shown significant progress. Modeling and skinning seem to be the most important roles for a starting team, if u have that u can gain a lot of interest fast. I find mods that have that aspect end up dying later rather then earlier because they then lack the guts of a mod, which is the text, scripting, artwork and general play of the mod... The wheel of time mod-teams i have seen always seem to have the guts but fall to the side when it comes to presentation (modeling skinning). Dont get me wrong, modelers and skinners have been part of the teams ive seen, but the workload is HUGE for them and the mod doesnt move along (atleast it doesnt seem to), which then causes the rest of the team to give up... Scripting, for example, is best focused on AFTER u have core game files completed (EDU, EDB, Map files, etc). Modeling and Skinning takes time and a lot of work hours for little to show in the end. To be able to do 20 or so factions worth of units and merc units is months of work for a team of modelers/skinners. Where as u could fudge a beta release of text files (likely with errors but playable) in a fraction of the time. Being able to get people (and keep them) motivated is probrably the hardest task. The Leader would have to remain focused and keep everyone else on the team up to date and ensure a timeline is being kept to. Everyone has a real life away from modding, so peoples availability will differ. The amount of work one person is able to do then another in the same time can differ greatly, which can cause stress within a team because 'ive done more work then u' attitude. So a leader needs charisma to get everyone to see things 'his' way and agree... The bottom line is that the whole team needs to be passionate about the wheel of time and not just in it to mod for it to get to a playable state.
Sounds like a lot of work, but I guess every mod is. It's the kind of thing I'd be interested In helping with, but like you I don't have the time to lead it. If you ever hear of someone that starts one let me know and I'll do research and descriptions and other stuff like that. Thanks for responding so quick.
