Me and Caradog speak Welsh, and there are probably more on the forum who can too. Gaelic is only spoken in Ireland and some remote parts of Scotland. Although Welsh is said to be related to it, it is a very different sounding language.

There are approximately 750,000 Welsh speakers in the world- including a lot in the former British colonies and in the Welsh colony in Patagonia.

the welsh language is from the same family as gaelic, it could be argued it is a type of gaelic. before the romans came the inhabitants of mainland britain where all the same people, just different tribes. when the romans came they all headed north into the scotland and west into wales to escape the romans, the languages spoken in these places (welsh and gaelic) are what remains of these people. years of conquest and different people comeing to mainland britain has caused the welsh language and the gaelic language in ireland and scotland to almost die out. you have the english to thank for this who made it a crime almost to speak these languages and to teach them in school. however thankfully they have been bought back from the brink and intrestingly in wales, more young people are fluent in welsh then old people, which suggests growth. wales has seen more sucess then the other 2 in holding on to its language, and the percentage of people fluent is higher in wales then it is in ireland and scotland, ireland is very close behind and is making simular progress, sadly in scotland its almost all died out, its only its the very rural places will you hear it being spoke now.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith and other protestors are the reason the Welsh language hasn't died out. The Irish are still holding on to theirs, however as LoZz said, the Scots Gaelic is rare and most likely will soon go extinct. Which is a shame since I've heard it spoken and it sounds really cool. The other Celtic lands are Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany (France). The Bretons still have their language which is similar to ours in Wales, however the Cornish and Manx lost theirs long ago due to Saxon and Norwegian conquest.

P.S Welcome to the group Ali (forgot to welcome you!).

If you need any more sheep, we have plenty of sheep here too. At one stage there over 20 million, until the EU thought that it was a bit too much.
