Great post Armatus, I hadn't heard of the documentary before and I really enjoyed myself watching it. Thanks for the recommendation

I'd watch that movie but I hate Maher too much to do so.

Thanks Tai and Uly, if you decide to watch it just skip the parts where he's just standing around blabbing, skip over to the interviews which make up the bulk of the show. Seriously there are some laughs, as well as despair. His problem is that he focuses on negativity even though he has valid questions like the rest of us. Another thing that bothers me about Bill is that he blame everyone else for being a hypocrite then; acts as if he is on the morally higher ground. That is until you make a reference to one of his weaknesses like sex or drugs. Then he suddenly becomes just like everyone else an ignorant sinner. So take of it what you will. I still recommend it even to those who can't stomach Maher.

    really enjoyed Bill Maher's Religulous.

It needed to be said, aloud, without hesitation, to the people who needed to have it said to.

Yes that was a delight wasn't it? I don't even think he believed himself! LMAO....

Just some irony here. How funny is it that mainstream invidiuals inclined less towards a scientific understanding of life with more tradition in religious belief will pull Buddha in as a God like figure to worship. In many cases placing him as God. While the educated class of scientific thinkers with an open heart & mind become comfortable with Buddhism.

Isn't that funny? Ok it happens with all religion, but Buddhism is really mis understood by a lot of folks out there. Speaking for the west. But no doubt he's mis understood many places.

    Hi,
my belief is that belief is stupid. does that count as agnostic?
the true reason i joined this group is that i wanted to take a closer look at the ancient picture of the holy batman, who was my hero twenty years ago. not a god, but surely a hero.

a side note: i live in germany, and today being "karfreitag" it is forbidden by law to drink alcohol in the public, to play loud music and to go to a discotheque. i heard once that germany was a secular state, but that belief has just gone "poof", along with all the others.

    Greetings,

It depends... agnostic is simply without knowledge, that doesn't necessarily mean without belief. You can believe in many things, it's just what you choose to believe or accept is what defines whether you are or not.

You see if you are set firmly within a place of non-belief then what do you believe? I've posted a few definitions at the begining of this discussion.

Essentially, agnostic means 'without knowledge' yet that by no means without understanding. In fact to realize one's own limitation for experience is to awaken to a universe of possibility.

    Hope that helps

i've read them all, and i think to be an agnostic atheist-

i do not say that there are no gods, but as long as no gods are proven, i cannot believe in them.
if the existance of a god/several gods was proven, i wouldn't believe in them either, because they would be there then. i do not believe in my mother, i know of her existance.
    get my point?

Very good, but knowing of her existence is in essence belief.

Well one of my co-workers was killed the other day in a motorcycle accident. Although we didn't hang out and had a few minor differences he was one of those guys who would end up making you laugh by the end of the day if not the start of it haha... To think now any agnosticism he may have held could now be translated into total "gnosis" is certainly something to consider, yet it is not the first thing that comes to mind for myself. The first thing that comes to mind is our impermanence and eternal unconsciousness. 'Oblivion' and I find it somewhat disquieting. Yet he seemed to have a good life with many, many friends so I hope that he had the opportunity to tie any loose ends before his untimely end.

R.I.P. Rusty we had our moments of disagreement, but in the long run you were a great guy and a good friend to a lot of people.

And yet still I remain in this world while others face the mystery of death. Whether knowing anew or forever unknown all that seems apparent is separation. To Isaac like a younger brother with a whole life ahead of him, Rest in peace my cousin. Too long since I had a chance to speak you with last.

Am I right or wrong? I find it funny when atheists make the claim that 'agnostics simply a sect of theirs', an offshoot, a minor branch of atheism. The reality is that agnostics have moved well beyond trivial arguments in order to see a bigger picture I would make the claim that Atheists are "weak agnostics" not the other way around...
