The second capital, Constantinople, was no less than the previous one. The city survived countless attacks by it's enemies, and the the Empire gained power from it. In 7th century, Roman Empire lost all of it's southern territories to the vile Arab barbarians. The territory of Levant, Syria, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Cyrene and Nubia, all were captured by them. The Empire was weak after fighting a century of tiring war with the Sassanids, and couldn't recover it's territories. After a hard struggle, Arabs were pushed back. After a century, Anatolia fell to the Turkish barbarians. Then came in the Crusaders, who claimed Syria and Levant for themselves in the name of Christ. They were pushed out by the Saracens, but instead of retaking the Holy Land the Crusaders, under the leadership of Venetians, tried to take Constantinopolis itself! The Venetians failed miserably and every single one of them was executed. After more effort on the part of Manuel I Komnenos, Anatolia was retaken. Then the Holy Land fell. Finally, all the territories of Eastern Roman Empire were recovered except North African territories. In 1453, the defeated Turks tried to assault Constantinopolis by surprise, but they were easily crushed. Then arose the new Emperor, Basileios Konstantinos III Palaiologos, who successfully recovered the Danube frontier from the Slav barbarians. After a brief wait over a year, a huge army was assembled at Jerusalem, and took Gaza from the Saracens after a hard battle. With Gaza now under control, the governorship of Sinai is re-established after seven centuries. The reconquest of Africa has began!
