So I'm thinking of starting this hobby back up and I'm trying to decide whether to go with freshwater Asian or south American.

Some old photos of my 30 gallons I had back in 2000. There's a Red-tailed black shark, Chinese algae eater, a rosey red, a couple of white clouds, a gold snail and a Beta pictured.

Don't have an aquarium, would like to though, used to have a small one as a kid, now I've just got a betta fish in a one gallon tank by himself with just a little plastic tree and a rock to hide in. I'd like to get a bigger tank to get a catfish, I want a catfish.

Cool I think there's a cat fish in one of the album photos, wasn't' the biggest around. I've heard of some in our spillway being as large as a small car more likely a small kid.

well I have over 200 japanese coy in the moat around my house -- a few thousand guppies in various aquariums, I havent found a good predatory skrimp to make an ecosystem though

any reccommendations on shrimp that eat guppies or shrimp?

Dude! You must post a picture of your moat! oh wait how did you go and get suspended on us?? I didn't know there was shrimp like that maybe you're talking crayfish?

yeah i will take some pictures eventually I started with only 3 Coy, they are all well over 10 lbs by now, all the others are more medium sized, ive had my moat for 12 years.

and the shrimp; that eats shrimp thing, I know there is one, I think from thailand; not sure if they are full production for aquarium use yet though, just read some articles on them.

get a 1 cm thick rubber pond liner , you can buy in roll --- just dig pit, fill bottom with sand, brace rubber sheets fill with water , add pump and circulation like aquarium, fill with wonderous lily and flowers of the nile; add fish of your choice; snakes who eat fish will come shortly, and frogs and newts and all that--- its easy to maintain and easy to fix.

for moat you simply need some extra reinforcement around house foundation, dig pond trench build bridge to front dooor; fill with water and gators and mancatchers.

coy worth good money if you get right stock up to 3k a fish if they look good( they need to express characters in japanese to really sell for the big duckets)*as in on the scale and color patterns, and long wispy fins are also desirable--- you could set up a catfish or coy breeding warren in your back yard armatus by making several small ponds and run a single hose through the lot each draining into mainline, followed by large filter; they will still manage to breed exceeedingly well if they have space and food.

Wow, you guys can afford that? And why would you want things eating your fish? How fast do fish breed? Would they breed fast enough to not be wiped out? I saw on tv once they made a whole huge pond ecosystem thing, said it would be entirely self contained and would freeze over in winter and everything would still be fine underneath, that was cool, I'd love that. I also saw somewhere a giant like 5 foot catfish, in a giant brick tank the size of a room. I want that.

I'm going to do it myself so I don't have to put too much money into it. I have a couple books I need to unpack still from moving going to take vacation in Oct hopefully then I can start planning stuff like this. Not sure what size I want to go for, but definitely no moat around the house! LOL... I have a moisture/leakage problem with my foundation and that's the last thing I need! In fact I have to get a backhoe and dig it up so that I can put some tar sealant around the old blocks.

its very easy -- its a days work in a backhoe; the rubber lining is relatively cheap-- its all about time; and what you want to do with it.

Dude own a house that has a basement with moisture issues and that's the last thing you will think about doing to the foundation! putting water anywhere near it! I was told to buy a $1,700 dehumidifier. The one I got uses more electricity and takes hardly any water out of the air.

I just got a quote for $4,000 dollars to put a drain with sump pump and some "tuff wall" over the old block. That's not counting the quote I asked for the exterior waterproofing. I think you're right on one thing if you got a backhoe maybe do it yourself but it's a lot of damn work!
