On a "serious" note, the struggle for total Kontroll over TWC won't be between Americans and British. It will be a showdown between da Germans and da Greeks. MWHAHAHAHAHA.

Guys, Sim made a proposal that affects the AAR community:

    Award Reform Bill

I'm fine with the AAR medals mentioned among the "Minor Awards" in the Constitution, but Sim wants to scale down the medals size, which I oppose. They are fine the way they are, and they were meant to be displayed in their current size.

Let me have your opinion. What say you?
  5. Musthavename
    Musthavename
Wow, I hate everything in that bill.

Making all medals smaller and then spamming people with medals? Why not just make more ranks of medals? It'd just make people's medals look crowded and horrible.

Why not just stick a subscript under the Moderators Mace (and other time-orientated medals) after they've hit gold? Doesn't bugger up the system, but shows how much time they've dedicated.
  6. Aldgarkalaughskel
    Aldgarkalaughskel
Well, this bill would also mean you can get to keep your bronze, if you've earned the silver.
  7. Musthavename

I don't like that either. The Bronze medal would look redundant and would just be a waste of space.

The current simplistic medal system is FAR better. One medal per "thing" (no idea what to call it -_-). If people want more recognition, just extend it so theres more medals for each type, not just spam the living crap out of them.

Seriously, it's a terrible idea on so many levels. For what? Meaning someone who's done 2 years of moderating gets more than someone who's done 1? Just uprade the medal further!!!! Give it a subscript of "2 years" underneath Solves it without screwing the rest of the system up, which is what this idea does, screws the rest of it up.

Looks like Sim wants to take away my precioussssssss!

I was rather alarmed by his comment dismissing non-staff awards as insignificant. I have been writing AARs for a year now. I put quite a lot of effort into them and I thought I actually was enriching the site - maybe I was wrong.

I think the proposal would abolish my silver medal and I would have two microscopic bronze medals instead. I really don't like the idea of having rows of tiny icons just so that staff can compare their machismo with a ruler.

However, it is necessary to make the existing medals stack properly, so they need to be resized.

    PS. Well said, Musthavename!

I agree fully with Musthavename; one medal per 'thing'

When I first joined I had a very dim view of the members with 100's of different medals which amounted to the same thing. The current system works well, although I think there are too many medals for admin staff. An admin medal is all that is needed.

Agreeing with Juvenal that it is a bit insulting. I've spent quite a lot of hours before i'd won my Bronze medal. To say it's insignificant compared to a moderator's mace is a bit patronising. Considering, it's not like 99% of users will ever get a chance at even becoming a moderator, whereas everyone could get a chance at winning an AAR, PoTW whatever medal. It just seems rather elitist to devalue average Joe's medal and spam medals on Admins/Mods. Likewise, that Mod just gets a Mace for being a Mod, not for doing a brilliant job. It's not like I can just write one crap AAR, drag it out over 3 months and someone pops along and gives me a medal, what I write has to be something people like.

Yes, I agree it's biased when I am the average Joe with a medal, but my point does stand. I didn't just spend a few hours and *pop" ooh a medal! It took me 3-4 months of AAR writing before I got it. And when you considering people like Juv have been writing a heck of a lot longer than that, you do need a fair amount of committment to get something.

Just a quick question: will the 'minor awards' (f.e. AAR and PoTW) be scaled down in size?
I think they are perfectly fine the way they are, and they were meant to be displayed in their current size.

I agree with Lucifer that the value of these awards shouldn't be decreased. I think it's a little bit degrading to call the last few awards "minor awards". To earn a Professor's Robe or an AAR or PoTW medal can take up several months, a good deal of skill and work.

So I'd propose to call them "Miscallenous Awards".

Here's my draft for the first paragraph:

    Quote:
These awards are granted for participation in particular site activities, and they clearly show a certain level of commitment and contribution. Any member, peregrinus or higher, can qualify for these awards. As with site administration awards, a member may receive multiples of the same award.

Note that I took out some parts like "relatively small an inconspicious", because i find it demeaning.

What's the problem with people improving content quality with their contributions? Medals (including the miscallenous awards) are one of the greatest attractions of this site. They are encouraging a lot of members to put more efforts to their TWC activity. They are one of the fun factors which makes this site so great. Earning a medal (even the miscallenous medals) can't be compared to earning a rep crown (another fun factor of the site), nonetheless you propose to scale them down to the size of a rep crown. I think this is not entirely reasonable.

With that said, I like the classification of the medals in your bill, and with the changes proposed in my posts (#14 and #20), I support it.

Regarding AAR medals, I asked it from you personally before calling for medal designs. :original: You said they have to be 35x35 and 75x75 pixels (small and big versions).

On another note, does this mean you want to substitute silver medals with 2 bronzes? If that's the case, I oppose.
If the silver medalist can get to keep his bronze and the silver, I support.

I can copypaste some of your thoughts there, but perhaps Juvenal could post his opinion first...
