Just curious as to the various techniques and steps which people use to draw human figures. Would be good if you have like a drawing of the major stages. I'll see if i can fix up something to put up.

I draw a person`s outline then photoopy that many times and draw in the details of the different things. Mass production of drawings is what I call it.

I have a bad habit of starting the detail before the body, I try to do a rough sketch of the form first.

Yeah i put a pic in my head, and always start with the shield, ill upload some of mine when i get home.

The trick with always starting with the shield is that it gives a standard for the size of your person, because a roman shield always goes from the knees to the shoulder. Then you place the left arm (holding the shield) to bbegina posture, and draw the outline of the armor and belt, starting by going across the shoulders. You can do the head next after you get the tunic/hauberk drawn, and then you begin the legs, which is the hardest part. I'll show some rough sketches and a finished version tonight.

I'll keep that in mind, that last time I started with the shield it was a total fail because I hadn't taken any consideration to scale.

Yeah, the general rule of proportion is the body to head ratio is 5:1, and if a heroic figure 6:1.

If you draw a shield, and then draw the shoulders, you get a good scale as to the height and then width of the body.
