Its good to see an astute man like you, who could be statisfied with a mere emperor rank
I have allways been modest...you can be my viceroy!
Did you guys check the topic on Roman sculpture? Especially the end of page 2...
Whats the matter with it? Apart from Sigs obvious theory of decline...
Well that was precisely it. I just wanted to share my sadness with someone....
Oh man...drink a beer...and get over with it
Wine did the trick cheers!
What kind of medieval beers were there? I know we have mead which is wine actually, what about cumus?
Well I like a good ale, blonde at that. It's funny because I like both my coffee and my beer like I like my women ok I just like women in general lol... so I found a great site on the history of beer, but I lost my bookmarks. I'll post it up here if I can find it.
I once read a long time ago that in northern England (c. XIIIth century) the quality of beer was sometimes tested by having a man sit on a bench where beer has previously been poured. If his trousers didn't stick to the bench, the beer was good to drink and not too sweet. Sounds a bit funny... I have never done any research on the matter so I don't know to what extent this habit was true. Anyway I'm sure you guys know better than I do so I would be curious to see if this is fantasy or not.
Anyone?
sorry, i like wine
Wine was different back then.
Still looking for the link about the history of beer, in the meantime enjoy some early Spanish music Vuestros ojos (encore) from R. Dowland's Musicall Banquet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ81bbG-khM
Regarding one of our earlier conversations I have made a thread on The Alexiad
Here we go again. SigOne made a thread related to the one which was about the Dark Ages. Someone could find quotes about the early empire to do exactly what he does for the Middle Ages. That would be equally ridiculous because it would only be a selection of quotes trying to prove a bias and ignoring everything else. I wish he could read a couple of books about the Middle Ages and Late Antiquity.
What was the thread?

So are you saying the dark ages was really the dark ages or just unimpressed with his use of quotations?
I'm unimpressed by his use of quotations with which he only wants to prove his distorted vision of history. It is rather sad. If you are looking for a recent publication on the dark ages, see: Ward Perkins, The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilization
