I love that picture in the first link. There is one error in the text: the word "slav" doesnt comes from the word root "slava". That's a 19th century thing. Its closer related to an indoeuropean word which means "swamp" The name might mean either swamp-dweller, or something we dont know. " Speaker" maybe a likely meaning since germans are called "nemecky" (something like that) which means numb. --> someone who doesnt speak slavic
The ethimology is uncertain, personaly I believe in slav/nemac opposition, slaven/sloven is generic term for tribes that could understand each other while the nemac/nemec was generic term for the tribes they couldn't understand, and since the original homeland of Slavs is believed to be in eastern Poland and western Ukraine those tribes they couldn't understand were in fact germanic Goths at southeast and Vandals at northwest.
It seems to be a likely answer. Of course speculation in my opinion is involved in every matter of died out or proto-languages.. Btw, byzantian authors like to describe early slavs as redheads..oh if i had a time machine...
I don't know, they would probably lure you in their forests with some red hair chicks and then they would ambush you and cook you for dinner. It's in Strategicon...
After or before the sex with the redhead chicken? Hmm..I remember the slavic love for ambushes from greek sources (Procopios also tell us about it) but I dont think they ate humans
Yes we do... After of course, they wouldn't want their main course to be depressed...
Many Roman and Greek sources that I've come across relating to Europe refer to the northern people or barbarians in general has having red hair. At least that is the term used in the English translations. I am curious about his term, but haven't researched it more. Personally if red hair was predominate then why do modern scientists think it was something of a accident or genetic drift?
You wan't find a lot of read hairs in Serbia, only read haired girls I know around here are two sisters of Slovak origine.
Somehow every discussion with Clandestion ends up with discussing girls...hmm.. Byzantian and arabic travellers have interestng descriptiond, Armatus, I just looking to photocopy the best passages frm source collections..
I can't help it, I'm addicted...
Speaking of girls did you ever move to Africa mate? I think I saw you in a thread about how opposites attract anyway I probably am too, but I pretend to be well reserved in the forums haha...
Omg, Vásáry prof, from whose works I compilated my Steppe history summary has an email, which begings with "hulagu" Why would anyone use that nick? Favorite mongol khan maybe?
Hulagu was a grandson of Chengis?
Oh you mean that thing about immune system and how the women choose partners with most different DNA? Well it's better then Arik Bogu or wat the hell was it's name...
Hulegu was son of Tolui, who was Ghenghis's last son. He was that nice man who massacred Bagdad and ordered the caliph to be killed. Arigboga was his brother. Ghenghis had no sons who could appear in MTW2 with at least one chivalric star instead of a dozen skulls
What about that one who wasn't his real son, Jochi?
Umm...actually I think no one dared to claim that Jochi was a kereit child, even though ther circumstances were suspicious at best But there are better forms of suicide than angering Ghenghis...
What about the time when Kaadai claimed that in that family gathering?
Hmm..wasnt he made vanguard then?
What's wrong with being vanguard?
