    Forgive the elitist-esque title

This is a brainstorming place for the rules, with a focus on battle rules and adding a naval element to the game.

Maybe the navies can work similar to the armies?
  3. Okmin
    Okmin
    Like...
    Brigades --> Fleets
    Regiments --> Ships
    Troops --> Sailors
    ?

It could work but we'd have to come up with a few types of ships.

EDIT: Also we should get some army battle rules first. m said he had some ideas, so waiting on him.

Something to that effect. But yeah, let's wait for army battle rules first

Some types of ships could be galleons, galleys, galliots and fluyts

Here's a concept for determining the "wealth points idea" m came up with for recruiting troops in the future:

One wealth point = one regiment or ship
Regiments/ships start in the city/port they are trained and based in.
Wealth points are distributed based on factions' tiers (tiers will be updated by me with m's approval; to ensure unbiased-ness, anyone is free to dispute their ranking). These numbers can go up if anyone feels that they're too low...
    Superpowers: 6
    Greater powers: 5
    Great powers: 4
    Major powers: 3
    Regional powers: 2
    Vassals: 1
    Minor powers: 1
And now I just thought of the problem of "when do we get points and when can we spend them?" Which also applies to "when can we start wars, move troops, fight battles, etc?" So I have two ideas.

    1. Turn based
The same way ETW operates. We take turns making moves and stuff, at the end of each turn we get wealth points, but can't spend them until our next turn. Turn order would be determined by dice roll before the game starts and would stay the same the whole time. Highest roll of the die goes first, 2nd highest second, etc. In the event of a tie, the tied players roll again amongst themselves.

    2. Real time
Like RTS games. Everything happens in real time, with a set number of days before you get wealth points. To prevent exploitation, battles only happen when all the involved players are present.

The numbers of wealth point system are good. No need for more.
And ,personally , i would like to see a RTS system.

    Greetings gentlemen,

As some would already know, there is a problem in my monitor, so its back to pen and paper.
I am currently working for the Battle rules and Campaign as well. Hence suggestions and feedback in campaign rules are welcome.

As for naval, I wouldn't claim to be an absolute expert. Apart from admiring ships, I couldn't dare go so far as formulate rules.
So, is there an naval expert here? If so please volunteer, I am a little handicapped due to the problems in the monitor.
So, I think I can safely trust the ministers to take care of it.

Hardly an expert, especially of that time period but I'll help how I can. Won't have much free time for the next few weeks either. And I don't know how much more I can add other than what I've already messaged/posted to you m_1512 but if theres anything specific you need message me and I'll see what I can scrounge up.

As of now, information about faction navies... And rules, if members support naval battles...

I am currently working on Battle Rules...

Well I don't think that there were too many ship types at the time. Ships of the line hadn't really come into things yet but gunpowders had.

First there were some galleys still in use, (oar and sail driven ships which were relatively small) especially in the mediterranean. These often had a few cannons but not many as they were usually older ships and not designed for cannons and they had to have room for the rowers so a tiny broadside and often bow/stern chasers where there didn't have to be room for rowers. Often originally trade ships

Then there were the cogs which were pretty small ships which were sail driven. So faster than galleys and with more firepower but less maneouverable.

Then there were the carracks which were much larger and usually proper warships. Very good firepower for the time, less maneouverability due to size, good speed under good conditions. Pretty strong.

Galleons were huge ships which were made primarily for trade on a large scale and large trips. Solely sail powered. Good armament due to size. Very strong. Good speed under good conditions but poor maneuverability.

Also a wide variety of other smaller ships with a specific use such as fire ships (ships which would sail alongside a ship and set both on fire), Bomb ships (Bombardment ships, near useless in purely naval battles but good for bombarding land targets.) Both were pretty rare but definitely known about by most admirals annd used to large degrees (Drakes attack on the Spanish Armada)

Anyway by ~1650 ish line of battle tactics were being developed which revolutionised naval warfare. It got a lot more organised and cannons were relied upon much more. Due to this reliance larger and larger ships were built, organised into rates. Is this going to go to that period?

Also there's still the question of artillery I'm afraid.

Sorry it took me so long to post this, I've been typing it on and off all day so I probably missed something major too.

Edit: Knew thered be something, these abttles will be very difficult to organise as the weather is crucial so that could take some sort of complex system, unless someone impartial just decides everything quickly.

Perhaps each ship type should have two atributes: Speed and Firepower
For example, here is some types I stole from Pirates!
    Brig: Speed=Medium Firepower=Medium
    Sloop: Speed=Fast Firepower=low
    Galleon: Speed=Slow Firepower=High
    Frigate: Speed=Fast Firepower=High
  13. Okmin
    Okmin
    Hull strength too.

And how would these attributes work in the actual battle?

unless someone impartial just decides everything quickly.
    That's what m's for

Higher Speed=Able to move farther in a single turn, also able to turn faster
Higher Firepower=More damage dealt with each attack
Higher Hull Strength=Able to take more damage before exploding/sinking/surrendering

Also, I think ships should have two kinds of attacks, Broadsides and err.. not Broadsides. Broadsides would deal the Firepower value, while not Broadsides would only do a quarter or something

    Okmin
For the "able to move farther in a single turn" thing, we should wait to see how the land battles work... Don't even know if it's turn-based or not Otherwise I like that.

And I'd like to call a vote on the campaign being turned-based or RTS style... All in favor of turn-based say "turn-based", all in favor of real-time say "real-time"

    Real-time.

    Real time.

And I think that maneouverability and manpower have to be considered as well. In a perfect world all would be taken into account - as well as a lot more - but it isnt perfect. Even though I think that this is terrible the easiest way to make things a bit simpler would be to have speed used in campaign type considerations and maneuverability in battle.

Manpower is essential though as boarding was still one of the most important tactics. And what do you mean by the "not-broadside" attack? There could be say fire as you bear so that cannons are only fired when there is actually a target and theres the bow and stern chasers (cannons on the fron and back of the ship to provide some protection to these areas which wouldn't fire in the normal broadsides.

Also what about different types of shot?
  20. The Stig
    The Stig
I meant front and back mounted canons, as opposed to canons on the sides, which would be a broadside
