Sometimes it is not requires to check all the internet sites to get a good summary and detailed information about the East of Rome.
Esp. our mod Ages of Darkness provides many good Historiae-threads about early byzantine warefare.
Everybody is welcome to commet and/or to criticise the content or to learn something.

May I suggest you change "byzantine warefare" to something thats accurate like "Eastern Roman Warfare".

I assure you he meant 'byzantine' as reference point only, currently and as we have said in other discussions within the group - we simply cannot avoid its use entirely.. but we refrain where it becomes of no good use, such as with talking about them frankly, casually.

I highly recommend PM's work for all who have RTW still installed, but even if you just want to learn about the 5-7th centuries.

many years ago (long long time before you joined our community at TWCenter) I have argued that a term like "byzantine" does not exist. Moreover - I gave sources and detailed descriptions why this term is nonsense - even here in this social group.
But many thanx for your suggestion.

    @Armatus
thank you for the kind words.

They were well deserved my friend, you have educated us all.

but make no mistake certainly we all have hopes for the future that at some point "byzantine" will fall out of style.

My friend, as long as all the universities of the world offers studies and seminars called Byzantine studies (in England+USA) or Byzantinistik (in Germany) or Byzantijnse Studies (in Netherlands) or even in Greece the lessons are called Βυζαντινολογίας or Βυζαντινές Σπουδές - so long this term will survive - if we want or not.
One of the most beautiful and most important museums stands in Thessaloniki (Greece) and is called Μουσείο Βυζαντινού Πολιτισμού - Museum of Byzantine Culture.
    http://www.mbp.gr/html/en/index.htm
So the Greeks are not entirely innocent of the situation.

For my articles and for my students (students in real life - not here at TWC) I always try to avoid the term and give explanations why this wording is wrong. And indeed, the modern history becomes more detailed since some years and is using the term East Romans of the Medieval. A positive example is a non-academical work for the common people from Osprey called: Byzantine Infantryman: Eastern Roman Empire c.900-1204 (Warrior)
The book is nearly completely using the term "East-Roman-Infantry" on all the pages.

But the word "byzantine" is sometimes an easy term to describe quickly the periode we are talking about.
Especially concerning the warefare you can make a disctinction between the single Roman eras. You have the time of the kings, the early, mid and late Republic, the Principate, the Dominate and finally the byzantine era. It is however 100% correct and much better to speak about the Romans of the Middle Ages.
But as you know - amateurs may not have an idea of what time span we are talking about.
A change of that fact cannot occur by force. You must always convince with arguments and examples.
Here in this internal social group everybody knows well the differences - but outside in the mod-jungle you face another group of people. Persuasion and patience is the key.

Anemi Digital Library aims to provide simple and quick access to a rich collection of digitized material related to Modern Greek Studies. Apart from finding bibliographic information, the researcher can also browse the documents themselves in electronic form. Here you may find a great number of old and rare documents, as well as recent publications for which their creators allowed the digitization and free distribution over the Internet.

Anemi Digital Library (http://anemi.lib.uoc.gr) was founded in 2006 by the University of Crete Library, with initial funding from the Operational Program Information Society (3rd CSF). Its enrichment was continued until 31 May 2009, with smaller funding from Library EPEAEK projects. New effords are currently made in order to find resources to continue the development of its collections.

From what I can tell, a brief decent visual history (represented by maps with foot notes) of late Roman to Italian states from 400 - 1900

As early as the 4th century, the popes had acquired considerable property around Rome (called the Patrimony of St. Peter).
