It's funny how Jos Gommans contradicts everything William Irvine said. William Irvine is exhibit A of orientalism.
Jos Gommans' book is pretty good, William Irvine was writing during British Raj though
Yeah. Gommans' book was very interesting. I want to read more on a cursory remark he made about how mounted archery kinda died out later on. I wonder why that was?
probably due to the fact that as the Mughal Empire declined it was less easy to access horses from Central Asia and elsewhere
That was my theory, but this is what his book said: "only the COMBINATION of (old) European drill and discipline with new, standardized weoponry (flintlocks, bayonets, cartridges, mobile field-artillery) made the real difference in the eighteenth century. For European armies this was a natural development from within an already existing infantry tradition; in South Asia this required some major rethinking which took more time and thus came (just) too late." (168) I wanted to get some more reading material from him. Unfortunately, Gunpowder and Firearms by Iqtidar Alam Khan is just not economical for me to get. Do you have any secret stores/libraries/torrent sites where you think I can get it from?
162, rather.
well do you have the osprey on the Mughals?
Who wrote it? I wanted that particular book because A) it's academic and B) it's Iqtidaar Alam Khan and C) it should answer some qs I have.
Ahh, Nicolle, meh. Already read one orientalist this week :p I'll check it
he suggested reading "The Asian Military Revolution." He thinks the reason was purely military.
Gommans, J.J.L. to me show details 2:06 PM (21 minutes ago) There is no recent literature on this issue - the older stuff is covered in my book. I feel, the reasons are mainly military, but also partly economic and cultural. For wider comparisons, have a look at Lorge's recent The Asian Military Revolution. With all good wishes, Jos Gommans
