Aye, I'd recommend JJJ (Japanese Ju-jutsu), Aikido or 'Ninjutsu' for some good ol' fashioned Japanese joint-locking and restraining.

3 years training Karate in Japan? Very nice indeed, Wild Bill Kelso!

You want joint locking and restraining?

Taijiquan is excellent for that stuff but it's very tough to find a good teacher in the UK. So I'd recommend Aikido or Ju Jitsu as you're much more likely to find someone that knows their stuff.

Personally I wouldn't recommend Ninjutsu - In my experience there is way too much extra stuff to learn if all you want is restraining and locking. If learning extra stuff doesn't bother you then I'd recommend Escrima (Doce Pares if you can find it) over Ninjutsu as it's much more practical... on the other hand if you're overweight, Ninjutsu is awesome for fatman fighting.

Coming from a stand up striking art I'd say your best bet will be BJJ, you might not be that interested in ground fighting but if you can't do it then your vulnerability shoots through the roof. It's also got a great emphasis on relaxing, like Taijiquan, which might help even things out after all that flexing and shouting

I have to mention Systema also, it's a very good art for what you want if you can find a good teacher.

EDIT: I hope it doesn't sound like I don't like ninjutsu, I think it's great. I did it for a couple of years and I regularly train with a couple of Ninjas. Ninjutsu is a fascinating and very effective fighting art.

Thanks for the advice Taiji. I imagine Ninjitsu is OK as long as it isn`t instructed by Ashida Kim. I am thinking of joiing a Ju-jutsu club located near me, but first I am building myself up physically. I look forward to joining a club after some intense kettlebell conditioning

Ashida Kim videos are a fun distraction. I love the one where he teaches how to break into an enemy "castle" in middle america.

Here's a mate of mine teaching a melon not to mess with his mate's tummy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NI7Rl0cEEs

EDIT: hang on... that's not a coconut is it? I'll have to ask him.

Not me. I can appreciate some of the stuff they do but mostly it seems a bit dumb. They're trying to make entertainment out of martial artists and sometimes they seem to sacrifice the truth to do that.

I'm the first to laugh at "no touch" knockouts and other hypnotic phenomena (i'm a trained hypnotist) being touted as realistic self defence techniques but that site is like a conspiracy site - full of and adverts.

Maybe I haven't given it enough chance though. So, do you like it?

    Sorry for the late reply.

No problem Taiji although I must say if you want to learn restraints and locks quicker then you should ask an instructor and get a few one-on-one sessions. If you simply wait in lessonsfor the right one to come along then, yes, it will take a lot longer.

I'd also say Taiji is good for a great variety of things but we already know that, Systema too is great if you can track a teacher down.

I'd say that, as always, most things depend upon the person. I've seen escrima practicioners beaten by BBT artists and vice-versa because in the end the best man won not due to his martial art but due to his own skills.

Lastly, if you can find a BJJ school and practice that alongside your stand-up then this is something I'd recommend. Some puritans don't like it but in all honesty it will improve your ground game no end.

    S'all from me, for now.
