Yes I practice Jiu-Jitsu (The Japanese Gentle Art, not the Brazilian one to prevent mistakes ) And at the time having a Blue Belt while being 23 years of age. Wow 16 years old and already a blackbelt, even though you moved up from a junior Black belt that is quite an accomplisment! Congrats Hey check out this site Dauntless its all in Dutch but the youtube movies look quite nice http://jiu-jitsu.hyves.de/?&pageid=31HQWLHN9X8G8SC80
Thanks for the link - I'll be sure to check it out - Japanese is always the way to go
Taiji that was a great demonstration! We have a kind of this "borrowing the opponent's force and avoid" in Jiu-Jitsu as well. We once had an exercise you might know, it was like this: You and your opponent would standing near eachother and face eachother in something similar to the chinese Kung Fu "Horse Stance" (I'm sorry if I'm not using correct terms here people, just trying to clarify ) Then we would both lay the palms of our hand to eachother and the purpose of the exercise is to break your opponents balance so that he has to move his feet to stay standing. This meant you would have to use force to push, but the other could borrow that force and avoid your push so that you would lose your balance in turn. It was quite a nice and useful exercise which trained reflex, anticipation, balancing and some more useful techniques
Btw Dauntless, Yoseikan wasn't my kind of Jiu-Jitsu, its more freestyle if I have to believe the title of the youtube video, but what could be more freestyle than Jiu-Jitsu itself ey
Glad you liked it Wundai You used the correct term, mate. That sounds like a tough excersise, it sounds like you have a situation where if either person pushes forwards both people stand a chance of falling over. Jiu-Jitsu is not a style I know a great deal about but I reckon our arts are probably pretty similar, Chen style is highly respected in china for it's joint locking, etc. We probably know a lot of the same moves by different names and practise methods
Heh quite true, and since Jiu-Jitsu was never founded by one particular master and it is not even 100% sure it has Japanese origins(In my opinion it has though ) still alot of technique's from Jiu-Jitsu are the same in Chinese Martial Arts. So either Jiu-Jitsu took it from them or vice versa, for me it doesn't matter as long as it enriches the Martial Arts experience, right?
I read somewhere that Jiu-Jitsu has mainly Chinese Origins, however - the Samurai used it so that makes it Jap enough for me Sorry I havn't posted here for a while either - oh and the Jap term for Horse stance is Kiba Datch for future ref.
In chinese it's Ma Bu Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
By the way where did you read that Dauntless? That Jiu-Jitsu had Chinese Origins?
Sorry for not posting recently again - @ Wundai: When I went for my Black-belt, I had to submit a countless page essay on the history/origins of Jiu-Jitsu. I went to the library to study and found a really old book on Martial Arts which had all this information in. However I've failed to find anything now to relate to, which backs-up that knowledge, apart from - Although it has its origins in ancient Japan, it is also thought to be of an antiquated Chinese origin. Jujitsu was influenced by many fighting styles, incorporating parts of all of them. The weaponless styles of Jujitsu were integrated into the training of the Samurai, from the eighth to the sixteenth centuries. . I'll try get hold of the essay I did - since it should help me remember. - So does anyone here practice Kobujitsu?
Cool, Thanks Oh Btw its a social group mate, not a MSN conversation you don't have to be there 24/7
Nice info. Most Japanese martial arts such as karate, jiu-jitsu and ninjitsu were a product of a mix of the old Japanese and okinawan grappling and striking techniques with the new Buddhist Kung fu practitioners. Wrestling and grappling seem to be the most common martial arts, almost every country even outside asia seems to have its own style.
Greetings all, Just thought I'd introduce myself! Names Murdo (short of Murdoch) and I practice Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, Wing Chun, BJJ and Tai' Chi Chuan. Glad to be here and hope to join in any discussions that may arise.
Ah, I'm glad to see that this group is alive and growing Unfortunately I still can't train science is a demanding field and I'm growing fat and weak
Wow McScottish, Four Martial Arts, how do you find the time? Bernhem, no worries mate, sooner or later they'll have to let you start practising again, otherwise you'll take it out on those poor science students, no?
Wow McScottish, Four Martial Arts, how do you find the time? I have no idea myself, really! All I know is that I hurt like hell by the end of the week.
Haha I believe that, but it must be a rewarding pain that forms the body into a martial arts machine

Unfrotunatly, I have not been practicing much for the past year or two. I am thinking of trying some other styles focuses more on restraining techniques and joint locks.
