Yooo! I trained partially in Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do. Currently Trying to find a better Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do school.

Ditched T3H Chun, it was too classical and ridgid

do they allow sidekicks to the knees in MMA?
  6. Turtules

Yeah, but try that and you will get hurt, I promise you that. I'd recommend slugging it out for a few minutes then working the clinch, with some body shots, the going in for the takedown and ending it with a good choke.

I dunno man, MMA guys often assume that JKD wont work in the cage. How exactly would you get hurt trying to throw a stop kick to the knee?

i'm guessing you are gonna say that it leaves you vulnerable to a takedown.

I would argue that if its a retreating sidekick, the person throwing it would end up out of range of a takedown.

Also, i think that your idea of a sidekick is based on the idea of the Karate/Taekwondo/Kung Fu sidekick, and that sidekick is chambered, allowing someone to see it coming, and as you said, with that sidekick, "try that and you will get hurt" .

The JKD sidekick goes straight out from the stance with no preparatory motions, wihich makes it very hard to see coming.

As Bruce lee puts it: "Its kind of like your left jab in boxing, except it's much more damaging."

i just dont think it's all that efficient to "slug it out" when you could be trying to intercept. And if the intercepting attack doesnt drop him, then slug him!!!!

Hey guys . Nice group, so what martial arts do you guys do?

I do Karate in a small Scottish organisation. We are one of the best groups for kumite in the world, though. From 40 members in the team, we got 1 to the semi finals against teams like India and Japan who have a million people!

I would like to do Kalaripayyattu, as i'm part Indian and its cool. Check it:

Out of interest, what is the general mindset in an MMA gym? Is it all steroid pumped 6fters beating the daylights out of every punchbag in the place, or do any non-athletes do it for sheer self-defence or fitness? Do you have to learn petterns and techniques or is it just like boxing where you learn 2 or 3 punches and then you do fitness and conditioning for most of it?

The mindset is to get bigger faster and better at whatever your style is. Most do pump steroids, those are the ones you have to watch out for ( Roid rage) I do it for fitness its fun and hard work, once in a while you get asked to represent the gym and fight amateurs. And yes you have to learn combos, for a short while, and then fitness.

Yeah, as i thought. The Asian mindset is often pretty wierd. My Sensei told me that the old Karate masters even today make anyone who wants to be a student do stretches and conditioning (sometimes meditiation for hours on end) outside the Dojo for weeks before they even start training. Then it is utter dedication to perfection, breaking things etc. In Kalaripayyattu, you have to do 4 weeks of special massage so you are supple enough to do all the excercises. Its a lot different in the West, though we often get a shock when some of the master s come over from Japan and throw you out if you so much as sneeze in their direction.

Does anyone here do Jiu-Jitsu? I recently just became a 1st degree Black-belt in it now that I'm 16 - Before that it was a 'Junior Black-belt' since there's some legal age requirement for having an official degree in Martial Arts.

Hi all, I do Chen style Taijiquan which is a style of chinese martial art.

Here's a master (Chen Bing) doing a little wrestling demonstration:

Here's the same practitioner explaining some taijiquan principles while another master (Chen Zhiquan) demonstrates them. I've actually been to china and trained with the guy doing the demonstration

I really love this art but I'm fascinated by all martial arts.
