[edit] Historical Overview

Legionaries are the backbone of the Roman Army. Enjoying sucess over the rest of the world it gradually fell behind when heavy cavalry dominated the battle field.

[edit] Gameplay

Legionarys are able to form the testudo, in which they form their shields together, making them almost invincible to arrows, but suffers in melee. They are also able to throw their pilas once th enemy come into range, which is a deadly rain of heavy javalin designed to cause some fear and disorder before the main battle commence.

[edit] Stratagy

All Rome total war units have their strength and weakness, well, except for the peasant. Anyway, the strength of the legions is their dicipline and their high moral. I have seen legions reduced to 18 man out of 80 (I think) and routed 5 enemy unit, and they were still eager. Legions are not "fast" meaning you typically wouldn't want to use them to flank enemys, as they get tired and they are slower than barbarian troops. Another great benefit of legions is their discipline. When barbarian units are orders to charge forward they typically lose their formation and turn into this blob, while legions will almost always remain in their oringinal formation, meaning the 4 man thick 20 men wide rectangle. THis can sometime be crucial. Another benefit of their disciplines is their ability to speedily get out or get itno something, without sticking around and "slugging." That mean if a unit of cavalry is about to charge your legion you can have them get out of the fighting with another unit, turn around and counter charge the enemy in 5 seconds, while using barbarians this is typically impossible.
