Spartacus: Total War - Parthia
06-20-09 | by Amroth
Spartacus: Total War
«The Parthians are a nomadic people who conquered and settled in the area near the Caspian Sea in the 4th century BC as part of the Dahae confederation. Since that time the Parthians, under their Arsacid rulers (named after King Arsaces I), have fiercely maintained their independence. The Seleucids have, from time to time, claimed to be the overlords of Parthia and, from time to time, have actually been strong enough to try and enforce their claim, but the Parhians outlived them and without the shadow of the seleucids, have become the dominant power in the region.»
‘Spartacus: Total War’, the modification which is focused on the gladiator uprising led by Spartacus, has previewed another faction that will be included in the mod: Parthia. Check out screenshots and renders of the Parthian units here, as well as much information on the faction.

A Proper Empire balances combat, morale, and battlefield effects. Pricing changes in units, buildings, and research costs will challenge you but new units, new technologies, and additional benefits from many other changes to Empire will be available.

Terra Incognita adds the most advanced strategy-focused mod for A Proper Empire to date. Enjoy exciting new features like Manpower and Supply, a completely rebalanced economy and, most importantly, an exhilarating new gameplay feeling. The aim of Terra Incognita is to present the player with ways to employ diverse strategies and present him with interesting decisions that offer meaningful choices.

Thanks to major contributions from members all across the community the mod now contains additional unit textures, improved smoke and sounds, historically accurate battalion/naval flags. Also included; over half a dozen new units, with more to come -- there are even compatible additional unit packs provided by members of the community!

Musket fire is more realistic and artillery plays a key role on the battlefield. Technology rates have been reworked; some things are easier to acquire, some take longer. Charging is more effective, useless firing drills have been removed, and all units have been balanced accordingly. Building times for settlement and capital improvements now match the increased number of turns.

Curious? Check out our Hosted Mod Forum or go directly to our Download Thread

Today we are proud to present the faction, Mamla'ha biMassylim (The Kingdom of Massylia). Its been a long-time coming, but it is a faction that we couldn't leave out. A great enemy of the Qarthadastim, their nomadic beginnings will offer a very different game-style to other factions in that part of the world. Eventually, however, they will settle and develop their infantry - perhaps even, as in history, under the patronage of the Roman Republic.

The Qarthadastim Empire has a new enemy at its doorstep, and from the depths of North Africa they will come.

RTR VII: FOE Mini Preview - Regions
05-28-09 | by Belisarius

FOE Mini-Preview: Regions
CATW presents :
The Illyrians

A long time ago (in 2003), when RTW was still in the cradle, CA team considered including the Illyrians. This project never materialized in the final version, but some elements survived, icons, skins, and names. Later, probably the very first famous mod on RTW, RTR, gave them birth. They were generally seen as one of the most difficult faction to play. Now CATW delivers a new, massive, and updated version of this relatively "exotic" faction. Set in 300 BC, the Illyrians left a strong image for both Greeks and italic neighbours, of pirates, somewhat anachronistic warbands falling into banditry, partly hellenized, partly celticized and living like their fellow thracian brothers in the Homeric age, split into rival kingdoms. They left names like Bradyllis, and Teuta, queen of the pirates, which inherited from her deceased husband, Agron, the first true unified illyrian kingdom. This was 230 bc, and Illyrian pirates threatened and infested the entire Adriatic sea, and forced the romans, for the first time, to leave their homeland peninsula, launching a massive and fast blitzkrieg style conquest on the rugged balkan coastline. What follows is a well-known history...

Spartacus: Total War - Numidia
05-22-09 | by Amroth
Spartacus: Total War
«The numidians were originally divided into two berber kingdoms, the Massylii and the Masaesily. They were a country divided, each king always fighting for proeminence. During the second punic war, however, Masinissa, the king of the Massylii, allied himself with Rome, while Syphax of the Masaesyli, chose the Carthaginian side. When the war was over and Carthage, along with its allies, was defeated, the Masinissa was able to unite Numidia in one single kingdom, profiting from both the lands of the defetead Masaesyli king and lands that were before in carthaginian hands.»
Here’s a new faction preview from ‘Spartacus: Total War’, and this time it’s the kingdom of Numidia which is featured. Make your way here for information about the faction and screenshots of its units, and many more previews can be found in the mod’s forum.

Terra Incognita 0.2 Beta released!
05-19-09 | by Aradan

We proudly announce the release of the beta version 0.2 of Terra Incognita, the most advanced campaign redesign mod for Empire: Total War. Terra Incognita is one of the most venturous mods for ETW, introducing completely new features and hugely rebalancing the old to push the strategical gameplay to hitherto unknown levels for any Total War game.

Some of the many changes in the mod are:

Resistance: Regional traits allow it to implement a resistance system that is much more painful than the one in vanilla. Not only does it add 12 additional unhappiness points, it also lowers recruitment, supply, manpower (see below) and tax income.

Manpower: Terra Incognita now has a fully implemented manpower and (global) supply system. It consists of a value for each theatre and if you have no manpower left or are over your supply limit you will not anymore be able to recruit units in that theatre. Manpower is a measure of how many recruits you have in a theatre while supply shows how many soldiers you can support at a time.

Research speed balance: Research speed is much lower in TI. Gentlemen cannot steal techs anymore (they can't duel, either) and you get fewer of them because building a royal observatory is only allowed in your capital. More importantly, however, schools now have an upkeep cost that is subtracted from the region's town wealth over time (or directly from your treasury).

Base happiness: It's a bit harder to keep your population happy. Repression bonuses from government types are gone and provinces with a large population will show some amount of resistance all the time. However, the government buildings now have a higher happiness bonus.

Economic rebalancing: The economy has been hugely rebalanced. More advanced buildings are now actually worthwhile, administration cost has been cut in half and larger population in a region will mean a higher tax rate. The economy is scaled better between difficulty settings to allow players a bit more laxity on Normal or Easy difficulty settings. Tax bonuses have been revised to a more linear progression so high or very high taxes may now actually make sense if you need the money.

Population matters: Since population boosts your manpower (especially your manpower growth) and recruitment slot number as well as your tax rate it's not irrelevant anymore how many people live in a province. France for example will afford you a lot more units than for example New France.

Spartacus: Total War - Mauritania
05-17-09 | by Amroth
Spartacus: Total War
«The Mauritanian kingdom is located in the western part of Africa and has as neighbours their arch-enemies, the Numidians. They have always been enemies, but ever since the crucial help the Mauritanians gave to Rome in the last war of the numidians against the Senate, they have sworn revenge against each other and war is inevitable.»
‘Spartacus: Total War’ has a new preview out showcasing the African kingdom of Mauritania. Renders and screenshots of units such as African Legionaries and Camel Raiders can be seen here.

Das Heilige Römische Reich
is Recruiting!

Hear Ye Lords (and Ladies), your favorite Holy Roman Empire Mod is filling up it's ranks.

Progress on dHHR 0.8 is running strong, but to reach our ambitious goals and to do so in time, we will need your help. To get a first glimpse what is awaiting you, have a look at our previews

Hereditary Titles
True Bloodline

These only show a small percentage of what we aspire to bring the times of high medieval emperors to life again. So, what can you do to make this possible?

Scripting:

The mechanisms behind the screen have always been heart and soul of dHHR and will be so in future. Our reverend founder and hithero scripter Dimitri_Harkov has gone into semi-retirement, but will stand by us when we will start our most ambitious scripting project: The Investiture Controversy . Be prepared to see lords and bishops taking sides for Pope or Emperor, Imperium or Sacerdotium.
As a scripter in our team, you will need a basic knowledge about the scripting landscape of MTW2 and an unbreakable will to bring up and overthrow new ideas til they weep work. Our scripter konny and of course our Grand Master Dimitri_Harkov will share their ideas and help you in every trouble, to make one who came to scripting as a timid mouse going out as a braggart bear.

Coding:

Future changes will also be made to our recruitment-, building- and combat system, to improve the unique management and "Knight Realism" of dHHR. So, if you ever had a look into EDB and EDU - and you are knowing what i am actually talking about - consider yourself dHHR's upoming next coder.

Mapping:

Though our map will not change considerably, there are always things to do: Rivers to be shifted, cities to be moved, borders to be corrected... all the things you do in everyday's life. Ever had the feeling we mistreated the border of your living place? Then do something about it!

Modelling/Skinning:

Though we would never judge anything as important as the inner values, we are no loathers of beauty, either. All persons sharing our feelings - and having, by chance, skills which apply to textures and models - will be welcome. Don't hesitate because you are a beginner, you can only improve. Our artists DerDiskuswerfer and my humble self will lend you a helping hand in stepping into a wonderful new world of pixels and polygons, where everything is possible - save for giving you back the life you will waste with us.

By the way, who needs a live when he can meet Mathilda ?
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Italian bred, fierce even in unwomanly doings - and not even the pope dares to fuss with her!

Researchers:

Hand on heart, who's not a history geek here, or at least pretends? Doing the only useful thing you can do with this attitude, we always try to have fun first and abuse history as little as possible.
Though being scantly washed nerds ourselves, there are always gaps we'd like to fill in - history wise, of course. Have a knack about eastern Europe or the Iberian peninsula? Apply! Been in history courses at the university and have no idea why you've learned to research? We will kiss the floor you look at and throw all other candidates out the door for you.

Beta Testing:

Last but not least, in fact best: All members of dHHR are automatically beta testers, who will see every new idea as soon as it got wings and lay hands on new content first.

Got interested? Drop a PM at either konny or HannibalExMachina to come just a little bit closer to the Candy Shop.

And as little thank you for straining your eyes with all the above, a little preview of our new Strat Map Models:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Denmark Scotland Franconia

note that the faction symbols will be changed accordingly.

So far, we have also added and revised some 1,000 German and French names, for example these will be your loyal supporters when playing with Swabia in dHRR 0.8:

EUROPEAN WARS
FRENCH UNITS PREVIEW

'European Wars' - a mod which takes us in 18th century. It is an age of 'Empire: Total War' which was announced long time ago. There are 2 developing versions of this mod: for 'Rome: Total War' and 'Medieval 2: Total War'. After 'Empire TW' release, 'European Wars' will be a Realism-Mod for this game. Age of 'European Wars' seems to be very interesting for a gamer, because it is age of many military and economical changes. 'European Wars' is an adventure full of wars and battles for every fan of Total War series. An action will take place in times of Great Northern War, The War of Spanish Succession, The War of Polish Succession, Scottish Jacobite Rebellion and Seven Years' War (military actions in Europe and Northern America). 'European Wars' has to offer many great units for a gamer, for example: Prussian Grenadiers, Hussars of Death, Polish Winged Hussars, French Mousqetaires (Elite Guards) and many others!

FRENCH UNITS PREVIEW

This is the last preview before mod's release! Preview of French units is historically the most accurate and the best done preview of 'European Wars' so far. Over 30 different units, including cavalry, infantry and many elite guard units of which France was famous for. There will be Mousqetaires, Gendarmes or awesome grenadiers, additionaly historical character of marshall of France. Variety of hats, uniforms, boots and... haircuts! These units are more historical than French units in Empire Total War! France in period of Louis' XIV rules and his grandson Louis XV, great power and great looser in 18th age at the same time, had huge significance in the age, this is why this fraction is presented as the last one before the first version of the mod. King Louise Assurbanipal (me) is Units' author. Special Thanks for Lordz (NTW2) and 'With Fire and Sword'. in this preview there are some elements of units from those mods.

The Greek Wars v0.9
02-28-09 | by Amroth
The Greek Wars

‘The Greek Wars’ is a modification for ‘Rome: Total War’ v1.5 set in ancient Greece. The mod starts in 360 B.C., and lets you choose between one of eleven factions: Athens, Thebes, Megara, Corinth, Argos, Sparta, Messenia, Elis, Arcadia, Achaea & Sicyon. Your objective is to take control of one of these factions and achieve hegemony on a map of southern Greece consisting of forty regions.

Based on a fan fiction group story started at totalwarforums.com (story here), the mod has some of the ahistorical elements which comes with fiction and multiple authors. But, for the most part, it tries to stick with the historical realities of 360 B.C. Greece (or what is known of it). Read more about, and download, the mod here.

RIOS IBFD BRG II EXPANSION DARK AGE MOD
02-25-09 | by Empress Meg
Third Age: Total War has released a new preview, Orcs of the Misty Mountains.

Upon the defeat of Morgoth by the hosts of the Valar, the many creatures bred by Morgoth in the pits of Angband were hunted down and destroyed. Those who escaped the forces of the West fled deep into the dark places of the world, awaiting their time for vengeance.

Many orcs of Morgoth's host fled into the roots of the Misty Mountains, where no other power could hunt them. There they remained throughout the Second Age, nursing their hatred and waiting for the time to strike. Throughout the Third Age these Orcs and Goblins fought against the Dwarves in a great war, ending in the Battle of Nanduhirion, where Dáin Ironfoot slew Azog, the great Orc-chieftain of Moria. What these Orcs lack in individual valor they more than make up for in numbers, using the horde as an alternative to single combat.

Now, as the Third Age wanes, perhaps that time has come. In 2941 TA, Bolg, son of Azog, led the Orcs against the combined might of Elves, Dwarves, and Men in the Battle of Five Armies. Their defeat served only to strengthen their resolve and lead them to their ultimate goal: to destroy the Free Peoples of Middle-earth.

Thrace: The Serpent Reborn
02-16-09 | by Amroth
Thrace: The Serpent RebornFan of the Thracians? Love the Basternae in ‘Rome’? Got «Thracia 4 Ever» tattooed on your bottom? If you can say «Yea» to at least one of the above you’re going to love SubRosa’s ‘Thrace: The Serpent Reborn’. No one will ever describe Thrace in vanilla ‘Rome: Total War’ as being a fully fleshed out faction, which is what this small (only about 12MB) mod is trying to remedy. It specifically adds more units and revamps some of the existing ones, and also gives you more temples (Kotys, Bendis, Sabazios) & ancillaries. There is also a mystery legendary artifact you can get for one of your generals. More information, screenshots and the download link can be found here.

Thrace: The Serpent Reborn - Basternae

‘Thrace: The Serpent Reborn’ is, in fact, just a small part of SubRosa’s main project, ‘Amazon: Total War’, which adds three new factions: Amazonia, New Amazonia and the Gorgons. If fierce warrior-women gets your juices flowing this is most definitely the mod for you. Both TtSR and Amazon are mods for ‘Rome: Total War’ v1.5, and the latter also has a version for ‘Barbarian Invasion’ v1.6. You can find out more about ATW here.

Thermopylae Map 1.0

The famous battlefield of Thermopylae comes to M2TW with Thermopylae Map 1.0, a brand new and huge historical battle map, playable with vanilla game as well as mods (using Byzantines and Turks as 'placeholder units'). The result of weeks of hard editing and modelling of the landscape, the Thermopylae 1.0 map is divided in two main thatres: the Thermopylae Pass close to the shore and the Anopaia path, hidden by mountains... the passage that your enemies will try to cross and outflank you!

Defend the passage HERE!

"Viking Invasion II: The Expansion Pack Medieval II Never Got"

Viking Invasion II has taken the slot as the main feature in the Downloader section of this month's issue of Britain's best-selling PC games magazine, PCGamer (February 2009, Issue 197, p. 80).

"This is about as good a Christmas present as the Total War community could hope for. It's the revered Viking Invasion expansion for the original, aged Medieval: TW, remade for the prettier Rome: TW - The Barbarian Invasion" the article begins.

The mod, the development of which went on in secret at Halie Satanus's In The Shade forums, took form quickly and Halie, Antagonist, DaVinci, Aradan, and Uranos all chipped in with support. Aradan became a lifesaver during the development of the mod and single-handedly did the ancs, traits, unit balance, and campaign balance; even helping out the beleagured MasterOfNone with a good part of the input for the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle!

"The scale of the thing is incredible," PCGamer goes on to write, "and it grants Rome a seriously different feel."

The Team of

Roma Surrectum 2.0

Presents

The Cimbri

"In truth neither from the Samnites, nor the Carthaginians, nor from both Spains, nor from all the nations of gaul, have we recieved more checks and alarms, nor even from the Parthians: for, more vigorous and invincible is the liberty of the Germans than the monarchy of the Arascides." - Tacitus

The Cimbri people were an enigma. Virtually unknown until they appeared around 120 BC during a mass migration in search of a new homeland. They had joined with the Teutones and other tribes to swell their ranks to well over 600,000. They came in contact with the Romans, due to a dispute with Rome’s ally the Taurisci in Noricum in 113 BC. Respectfully they acknowledged the sovereignty of Rome and made a request of consul Gnaeus Papirius Carbo for land on which to settle. They offered themselves as auxiliaries to Rome should the need arise. Carbo informed them that there was no land in Noricum, but that guides would direct them to a rich and bountiful area a short march away. But Carbo had already planned an ambush to rid the world of these “barbarians”; an act that would cause Rome more pain than Carthage ever inflicted...and put Rome once again under the threat of occupation.

Ages of Darkness Preview
10-13-08 | by Trajan

527AD - is the year when Flavius Sabbatius Justinianus became emperor -
With Ages of Darkness (AoD) you become a part of this time.

This century is widely considered to mark the end of Classical Antiquity and the beginning of the Dark Ages.

Following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire late in the previous century, Europe fractured into many small Germanic Kingdoms, which competed fiercely for land and wealth. From this upheaval the Franks rose to prominence, and carved out a sizable domain encompassing much of modern France and Germany. Meanwhile, the surviving Eastern Roman Empire began to expand under the emperor Justinian, who eventually recaptured North Africa from the Vandals, and attempted to fully recover Italy as well in the hope of re-establishing Roman control over the lands once ruled by the Western Roman Empire. Following Justinian's death, most of his gains were lost. The Sassanid Empire reached the peak of its power under Khosrau I in the 6th century.

Ages of Darkness 2 will offer a complete new unit pool of the Roman army in the 6th century, made according new historical sources. A new and unique map, new soundtracks for all cultures, a revised and overhauled sassanid unit pool, new 3D models for buildings, new 2D ingame graphics and a lot of other new stuff

Ambitious generals vie with each other for lordship over the domains of Megas Alexandos and peace is fleeting. Ptolemaios Lagou, an esteemed Strategos and friend to Alexandros, attempts to keep the balance of power spread equally among the Diadochoi, without favoring one man over another."

A mod for BI 1.6

"Breathes new life into one of TW's tightest and most atmospheric iterations with simplicity, balance and superb quality." - Antagonist

VI2 aims to recreate the campaign of MTW: Viking Invasion on the Rome BI engine. It sticks closely to the original campaign, only making changes to correct large inaccuracies, to improve gameplay and comply with the new engine. It is also set a little later than the original campaign at AD 851 - two years after the birth of King Alfred the Great of Wessex.
