I've made a small minimod for 0.81a with a bunch of features that didn't make it into 0.81 but I wanted to have in my next campaign. It mainly adds recruitable generals to the Roman faction and re includes first cohorts to EB and activates the night battle feature. A feature that was also already prepared for 0.81 but not yet activated. For all who don't remember these features from vanilla I have a small introduction below.

Download link V.1.3:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=1195

Change log:

V 1.3:
-Includes all permament bugfixes from EB 0.81a V2 as far as they effect files altered by this mod
-Praetorian cohorts charge bonus fixed
-morale bonus of 21 in one pontic temple fixed (now 2)
-added icons for schildtrom and shield wall formations to EB cultural UIs
-It's now (hopefully) easier to get a triumph
V 1.2a
-includes the changes of the Improved CTD FIX (new EDB)
1.2
-Fully comaptible with EB 0.81a
-Marian legionaries are now more difficult to recruit outside of Italy: They now need at least a level 4 MIC and a type II government
-fixed several bugs in the roman recruitment system that didn't made it into the hotfix
-several new quotes

To install:
-You need an existing EB 0.81a V2 (or EB 0.81a but V2 is recommended) installation before you can install this mod
-unzip the file into your Rome directory, overwrite all files.
-delete the "map.rwm" file in your "Rome\EB\Data\world\maps\base" directory

Features:

2 new Roman first cohort units for Marian and Augustan reform eras recruitable in Roma in the corresponding level 5 MIC.

-The first cohorts contains the aquilifer that carries the legions eagle standard that gives a moral bonus to nearby units. They consists of the best legionaries of the legion and thus have slightly better stats than the normal versions. All first cohort are numbered consecutively from I to infinity.

The first cohort of Legio I:

-Eagles can be lost (and of course in this case captured by the enemies of Rome) in battle when the Roman army is defeated and the first cohort wiped out:

With some appropriate consequences for the their general:

The eagle is transferred to the nearest enemy settlement were the roman general can try to recapture it to at least partially restore his reputation. Also this settlement will be a prefered target by the roman AI.

Recruitable Roman Generals
Recruited generals age and can get traits as normal family members but are not part of your family tree and can't become faction leader until they are adopted.

They are buildable in level 5 MICs by training their corresponding guard units:
-Equites Consulares in Roma with Camillan and Polybian reforms
-Equites Consulares in all homeland provinces after the Marian reforms
-Equites Singulares in all type2 fully Romanized provinces after the Augustan reforms

A newly recruited general:

Night Battles
-Night battles work as in BI, but without the silly torches. A general with the night attacker trait can choose if he wants to try a night attack. generals can get this trait if the succesfully fought a night battle or have more than 4 command stars. Reinforcing armies lead by gnerals without the night attacker trait, or captains can not participate in night battles.

Also:
-Commanding officers for all roman cavalry units
-A new unique building in Phasania (garamante royal cemeteries).

Just installed your mod.....looks good. Just one question, did you have to remove any units to get the first cohorts in the game?

Thanks.

No.

However in the custom battles unit selection screen EB has appaerently reached the limits of how many units can be displayed there. For some factions with access to a lot of regionals and many factional units, such as the romani, not all available units are displayed there anymore.

It actually names what legion it is when you recruit it? How does this work?

That was a new feature introduced with Bi, but it also works in R:TW 1.5. You can asign legion names to certain provinces in "DESCR_REGIONS.TXT". If in EDU the new BI attrribute "legionary_name" is added to a unit all units with it, trained in provinces with a legionary name will be numbered with a roman number and called legio XXX(the name from descr_strat). For Units trained in different provinces the counter always begin with "I". If you however do not enter this name in data\text\imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt the name will not appear in game and the unit will just be Legio Number X, as in this mod.

In "DESCR_REGIONS.TXT" where do you put the name of the legion? For instance

Quote:
Brettia
Rhegion
thrace
Leukanoi
13 170 198
silver, SW, B, n1, y2, n4, y8
5
2
Where does the legion name go?

Directly beyond the region name: (but haven't tested other configs.)

Code:
Latium2
       legion: Italica
       Rome
       seleucid
       Roma_Latium
       52 13 198
       tradeport, italy, rome, variantro, SW, B, y1, y2, y4, n8
       5
       5
If you want the name displyed in game you need an entry for "Italica" in imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt just as for the city and province names there.

Thanks a lot. Is it possible to designate units from neighboring settlements as being of Legio Italica as well?

Yes they can have the same name, but the numbers are counted for each province sepeartly. So you will have two Legio I Italica etc.

I've uploaded a new version, 1.2, compatible with the hotfix 0.81a. It is as savegame compatible as the hotfix. (I could continue my campaign, but you may encounter some problems to wouldn't been there otherwise.)

1.2
-Fully comaptible with 0.81a
-Marian legionaries are now more difficult to recruit outside of Italy: They now need at least a level 4 MIC and a type II government
-fixed several bugs in the roman recruitment system that didn't made it into the hotfix
-several new quotes

Hello Cunctator

Is it possible to merge this mod with the Spartan Merc Mod? I think many people like to play with both mods installed.

Sure, just add the changed and new spartan merc entries from export_units.txt (EB\data\text subdirectory), export_descr_units.txt, export_descr_sounds_units_voice.txt and descr_model_battle.txt (all EB\data subdirectory) to their corresponding counterparts from my mod, or vice versa. All other files don't overlap. With winmerge this should be very easy and quickly done.

Thanks Cuctator, but I knew how to do it I am not a newby :-)

My post was only a suggestion for you to merge these two popular mods.

Anyway, I've got another question for you: I'd like to add proper legions names (editing settlement.txt adn imperial regions.txt) but I also would like to change the first cohort recruitment according to AOR. I mean: I like to be able to recruit, say, Legio V Macedonica only in Macedonia region with his proper named first cohort.
This means that I have to edit also EDB by deleting the special resource Italy requirement for first cohort, right?

Are you sure this mod is save game compatible ... all I really want is the first cohorts ... I don't even care about the names so much ... are these units basically in the game but not activated as you mention and would it be easier for me to try this on my own instead of taking the whole mod. I just don't want to start over and didn't realize there are no first cohorts in EB ... I don't know why I even bother though because I don't seem to even to the Polybian reforms I start over so often!

AOR recruitmend in EB is generally rather a complicated affair, especially if you want to edit it from hand.

Each province is indentified by unique combination of hidden resources and each province has a unique line in EDB for each unit available there see for example Roma recruitment of the augustan first cohort below:
Code:
recruit "roman infantry legionary first cohort ii" 0 requires factions { seleucid, } and hidden_resource SW and hidden_resource B and hidden_resource y1 and hidden_resource y2 and hidden_resource y4 and hidden_resource n8
In Eb we use an excel spreadsheets that generates the whole recruitment/MIC section of EDB automatically.

The easiset solution to have first cohorts available outside Roma would be to delete the limiting province HR combo in the corresponding MIC roayl barracks_B2 recruitment line:
Code:
recruit "roman infantry legionary first cohort ii" 0 requires factions { seleucid, }
Based on the EDB from my mod this would result in augustan first cohorts beeing available in all provinces with type 2 govs. that can be build in ca. 120 provinces (since agustan MIC 5 is limited to type 2 govs.). Zhe names are defined in desrc-regions, but using this naming system i9ntroduced by BI you can't have a Legio V Macedonia, without recruiting Legio I, Legio II ,etc. Macedonia before. All first cohorts trained in in one province will be numbered from I upwards, this part of the system is hardcoded, as well as the legio before the number.

Mods that have first cohorts with the original name and number have around 30 unique first cohort units with the name part of the units name in EU.

Adding new units is generally not savegame compatible and there are no first cohorts in EB by default (but some traits and triggers, all the stuff for nightbattles). So if you add them you have to restart your campaign. I

The savegame compatibility mentioned above is only limited to the step from 0.81 + mod to 0.81a + mod, so you can continue an old 0.81 campaign with the old version of the firstcohort mod after you have installed the hotfix and the hotfix compatible 1.2 version. You should however not forget to delete the map.rwm file.
