The germanic peoples belong to a language family to which the greeks, the aryans of india, the celts, the slavs and the iranian peoples belong as well as italic peoples belonged, like the latins.. They separated from each other long before historical times, before the period Archer mentioned. Thus they belong to the same language family and share common ancestry but at the same time their location at the time of Rome's foundation was already far from each other. Some of the germanic tribes emigrated from Scandianavia/North Germany, and settled down in today's Russia, in Crimea, or in Bohemia. At the time of Rome's fall most of the east-germanic tribes were living in middle-middleast europe like Pannonia, Bohemia, Poland, etc. Some other tribes already migrated to West-europe like burgunds, visgoths, franks.
This fact is generally accepted. It is proven by linguistics, archeology and sources. For example Jordanes or Paulus D. Some germanic tribes really came from eastern steppes but before that were living in Scandinavia too..

Well - but noone ever called huns or alans germanic.

In general, I'd say that most ever living in europe came from the (south)east when you go back long enough due to it's geography - there's hardly a possibility for anyone coming from the west in ancient times.
Or you could go back further and say germanic people come from africa, but as a matter of fact, germanic people as a cultural entity formed where BI states them to come from - when they moved there, they weren't associated with germanic language or culture- just some indogermanic tribes later forming germanic tribes.

So imho, you can't state that germanic people are from the east - their ancestors did.

The majority of Europe is now made up of Germanic(this is the HUGELY predominate one)/Hellenic/Celtic...etc blood, with certain countries having other genetic groups (such as hunnic) mixed in. The migrations of peoples in the world is something hugely difficult to follow...I must admit it's incredibly intriguing really, and something I'm becoming increasingly interested in.

I'm not sure if the difference in size is that significant, but one possible explanation would be that being huge is of advantage in cold surroundings: While surface area increases by the exponent ², body volume increases by ³, so the surface to volume ratio shifts towards the volume with increasing size - surface is generally where you lose warmth, volume keeps it (and produces it), so within one species, you can generally expect to find the largest ones in the coldest regions (icebears being the biggest bears, penguins size typically decreasing in size the closer they live to the equator, the siberian tiger being by far the largest subspecies, desert foxes being the smallest of their kind with huge ears, increasing the surface etc...etc...).

I think a significant factor in all this is the militarised and warfare orientated culture of the Germanic peoples in comparison with the largely demilitarised peoples within the Roman Empire.
