Just tried rome on my other computer (only use it for work). It's nothing fancy, but I do have a 1600x1200 lcd connected with dvi, and I also have a decent sound system for it. Installed a fresh version of rome and played a custom battle, with all the graphics pumped up and on 1600x1200 on huge unit settings. All I can say is wow, I haven't seen anything so beautiful since I first fired up rome over a year ago.
What I'm really surprised about is that there was NO slowdown at all. On 1024x768 it was smooth as, despite my not so good computer (I'm not a gamer besides rtw) and old vid card. When I turned it to 1600x1200 it wasn't 100% smooth when you were close up, but it was pretty minimal and not noticable from a medium zoom. And the sound, you should hear the cav charge with that bass!!!
I did this with an athlon ~3k with a fx5700 or so. The game looked amazing and ran great, despite having read alot of posts about sub par performance (it ran ok with huge units on my thinkpad lol).
With good sound, a high res monitor (preferably dvi) and pumped up graphic settings it is unbelievable. I just wish I had played the countless battles vs the gauls this way.
One reason it might have run faster than I expected was that it was a clean install, ie vanilla graphics.
If I can run the game like this with this hardware I really don't know what you are all complaining about.
