Thought I'd post a couple of versions of our map here. I'll put both our 'antique' and 'plain' versions up, and I'll include 'small' (hehe) versions and large ones (high quality and detailed). The small ones are on the thumbnails below (hosted by imageshack), but the large ones are (for now) downloadable from our website. These might be good to keep on your desktop for easy 'preview' viewing, or you could print them out if you're particularly insane.

Here are the files:

Large Antique JPG Map (3.7 Mb):
http://www.europabarbarorum.com/i/eb_map_072_antique.jpg
Smaller Version:

Large Plain GIF Map (1.5 Mb):
http://www.europabarbarorum.com/i/eb_map_072_plain.gif
Smaller Version:

I'll try to keep these updated as best I can. These should match what we currently have in .72beta.

-------------------------
We have tons of other maps that we may start showing here. Things like locations of type1 and type2 government possibilities for each faction, faction culture at start, faction owner at start, faction creator at start, etc. We may get more of those up here too to help everyone understand things.

Yeah I love the maps, but one gripe of it, in my opinion, is that the names of the provinces are really long and complicated, but that's just the way I feel.

Some of us might not have liked some other factions' names too (when I saw the german ones at first I wanted to cry), *but* I buy into the whole system and the reason why we need those names: because it's most accurate to name the towns and provinces after the controlling peoples' languages (in 272 at our start). If we kept all but the German ones then we aren't being true to what we are doing everywhere else just because the names are different from what we are used to seeing or expecting.

Yeah, I understand EB's strict adherence to historical fact, which is a very rare thing indeed amongst paid developers and modders, and since I didn't really contribute to the mod's development other than the "good jobs" and "thank yous" in the forum, I have no say in this. But you gotta admit, what the hell does "Auwjōgōtánōz" mean?

What does "Chicago" mean?

I'm just curious why the Germans are the only ones who get diacritics. I mean why not include vowel length for Latin and accents for Greek or the various marks involved with transliterating Persian languages for the Parthians?

Only certain diacritics are allowed by the system. We've done the best we can with them.

Which raises the question why things are named the way they are. The long names is just a gripe for me, but it's nothing truly game-destructive, I respect your mod team's deep research into history to make Europa Barbarorum as historically accurate as possible, right down to the very names of cities and units.

Well, our Germanic guys worked with a Proto-Germanic research/reconstruction group, so I am confident they are as accurate as they can be. Why were they named this way? I can't say.

Basically because different groups did different factions. The German team decided to use diacritics, every other team decided not to. This may change in the future for standardization reasons.

Ok, the permanent links for the two big maps are now found above updated in the first post.

Please use "Save As..." and download the images onto your desktop. It will save us bandwith and you will always have the image there to load quickly.

I definitely recommend everyone downloading one or both of them though - they will help you remember where things are a lot more efficiently.

Enjoy!

Like your Antique map! It brings out the magelomaniac in all of us.
