Some info on Delta, provided by globalsecurity.org

Quote:
The U.S. Army's 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1stSFOD-D) is the U.S. Army's special-operations unit organized for the conduct of missions requiring a rapid response with surgical application of a variety of skills. Delta plans and conducts a broad range of special operations across the operational continuum. Delta is organized for the conduct of missions requiring rapid response with surgical applications of a wide variety of unique skills, while maintaining the lowest possible profile of U.S. involvement.

Delta's soldiers are carefully selected and specially trained. Delta conducts worldwide recruitment twice a year prior to its fall and spring assessment-and-selection courses. Assignment to 1st SFOD-D involves an extensive prescreening process, successful completion of a 3 to 4 week mentally and physically demanding Assessment and Selection Course, and a 6 month operator Training Course. Upon successful completion of these courses officers are assigned to anoperational position within the unit.

The Delta Force was secretly created in October 1977 by US Army colonel Charles Beckwith in direct response to numerous, well-publicized terrorist incidents that occurred in the 1970s. From its beginnings, Delta was heavily influenced by the British Special Air Service. Delta Force was designed as an overseas counter-terrorist unit and specializes in hostage rescue, barricade operations and reconnaissance. Delta Force is comprised of volunteers mainly from the 82nd Airborne, Special Force Green Berets and the Rangers. Delta is one of two principal US government units tasked with counterterrorist operations outside the United States (the other being Naval Special Warfare Development Group).

Delta is reportedly organized into three operating squadrons (A, B, and C) which are subdivided into small groups known as troops. It is repoted that, as with the SAS, each troop specializes in HALO, SCUBA, or other operational skills. Delta also maintains support units which handle selection and training, logistics, finance, and the unit's medical requirements.

Delta units deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1990 to serve as bodyguards for senior US officers and, later, as part of a massive effort to locate and destroy mobile SCUD launchers in Iraq's northern deserts. In 1993, as part of Task Force Ranger, Delta took part in operations to apprehend warlord Mohamad Farah Aidid in Mogadishu, Somalia. A small advance team was sent to Lima, Peru immediately following the takeover of the Japanese Ambassador's residence in January 1997 along with six members of the British SAS.

Used to be the Spetnaz. But now that Russia can barely fund the army, let alone its most elite fighting force, I'm going to have to go with the SAS. They're crazy SOB's. Those are the Brits for you.

i *know* this will turn into another "My country is better than yours" and i cant be arsed debating in one of those.

Im going to say SAS due to the extreme training they recieve (one of, if not the toughest courses around) but Delta Force are VERY VERY VERY Good at what they do.

EDIT: the other reason SAS win is because they dont have name that makes them sound like 1337 h4x0r5 wannabes.....

What's the point of this thread? These "who's better" questions are frankly immature because it is a question that can't be answered, especially not by the users on this forum, therefor, like said, it will degenerate into a "my country is better" type of discussion. All americans say Delta and everybody who doesn't like america will say SAS.

Official US Intelligence report: Delta? What is Delta team? No such thing.
So how can you judge which is better if one doesn't exist...

That wouldn't really matter as both units exchange experience and regard each other highly, which is why they would shake their heads at such a question.

I believe none would win due to this is just a matter of my country is better, but if I had to choose i'd say that they are close, and would probably just kill each other off.

none of them are better, since they all have there adavantages, and there shortcommings ,u cant go on compareing one force with another.
Also if u guys want to know about a special forces group i suggest u look at DEVGRU its an american counter terriost force.
the below passage is from Wikkipedia.
The U.S. Navy Special Warfare Development Group (NAVSPECWARDEVGRU, or NSWDG, or more frequently, just DEVGRU) is the United States Navy's premier counterterrorism unit, a counterpart to the Army's Combat Application Group (CAG), commonly known as Delta Force. Formerly known as SEAL Team SIX and MARESFAC, DEVGRU is considered to be one of the world's premier maritime counterterror units.

DEVGRU was the brainchild of Richard Marcinko, author of the "Rogue Warrior" series of novels. During an assignment to the National Military Command Center during Operation Eagle Claw, Marcinko immediately saw the need for a unit focused exclusively on maritime counterterrorism. In 1980, SEAL Team Six was formed. After Marcinko's retirement and subsequent literary exploits, the Navy changed the name of SEAL Team Six to DEVGRU to drop the unit out of the public eye. This effort has been surprisingly successful, with most people unaware that SEAL Team Six no longer exists within the Navy.

The DEVGRU compound is similar to Delta's at Fort Bragg, with a focus on maritime operations. It has firing ranges and shooting houses, a section of aircraft fuselage, and other likely hostage rescue locations. DEVGRU uses some unusual weapons because of their maritime environment, and the shooting ability of a DEVGRU operator is probably among the best in the world. DEVGRU firearms training has become famous throughout the world, possibly due in part to the entrepreneurial savvy of a few retired SEALs.

DEVGRU operators saw action in the Persian Gulf in 1991, when they raided and occupied oil rigs to defend against Iraqi forces. Operators were also active in Bosnia in 1996, where they helped hunt down PIFWC's (Personnel Indicted For War Crimes: pronounced "piff wic"); see war criminals. DEVGRU operators are believed to have participated in Task Force 121, the secretive group of elite troops charged with the capture of high-ranking Iraqi personalities in 2003. Similarly, many believe that DEVGRU was the primary assault force involved in the rescue of Army PFC Jessica Lynch.

The US government has described the Naval Special Warfare Development Group as having been established to oversee development of NSW tactics, equipment, and techniques. This, of course, is only partly true. The unit is under the direct command of NAVSPECWARGRU, however it is also a component of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC - Pope AFB, North Carolina), along with other CT units such as Delta Force and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR). It is believed that DEVGRU maintains its own helicopter support unit (2 Sqns. with 18 HH-60H for SEAL transport and support), but trains frequently with the 160th SOAR, especially in support of ship assaults, which frequently make use of the small MH-6 Little Bird, operated exclusively by the 160th.

Organization and manpower of the Group is a classified, and can only be guessed at. It is estimated that NSWDG now numbers approximately 200 operators, broken down by teams, much like the British SAS and Delta Force. Most recently, it has been reported that there are currently four such teams within the group, assault units Red, Blue, Gold, and a special boat unit, Gray. The missions of these units are, again, a cause for speculation, however it is logical that they are specialized amongst themselves, perhaps along the lines of the SAS -- Mountain, Mobility, Boat, and HALO troops (within a single Squadron). It is also possible that these units may have focus on specific target types instead, such as shipping, oil rigs, and structures, (although this scenario seems less likely due to the obvious need for all members of the Group to be current and proficient should a large scale operation arise).

There is also an administrative and testing section, which numbers approximately 300 personnel. These individuals are responsible for the actual testing and development of new NAVSPECWAR equipment, including weapons.

It has been reported that DEVGRU is one of only a handful of US units authorized to conduct preemptive actions against terrorists and terrorist facilities (NOTE: Red Cell once shared this charter, although it was never put into practice before the unit was supposedly disbanded). DEVGRU operators reportedly fire an average of 2,500 to 3,000 rounds per week in training

I'd say both, depending on the situation. SAS can be devestating given the right enviroments, as can Delta Force. Honestly though, if I had to pick a best special force in the world, I'd say Israeli Mossad. Their technically not military, and they've made a few screw-ups, but otherwise survived and done spectacularly well in a world(both locally and internationally) that rarely tolerates mistakes.

They would hardly have more experience, especially considering both units exchange experience. Why is bigger pool to choose from significant in any way? Both SAS and Delta manage to fill their ranks with what they have, only the best become part of these units, it's not a matter of having enough to choose from because they only take very few people either way. Also I wonder what makes you think that the SAS doesn't have state of the art equipment. Bias?

Quote:
I really would like to see a special forces vs SWAT teams though. The SWAT teams get more experience than anyone. They are also really smart about it, getting hostages out, making plans, getting blueprints, sneaking in.
Hardly works and most SWAT units are hardly up to par with military special forces. Furthermore, military units kill, police units try to take people alive. Units like Navy SEALs and Delta both have more money and time for what they do than SWAT units.
