Byzantine Unit List

From 1050 onwards, the Byzantine army experienced a level of fluxuation from revival, to decline, and back to revival again, at least til the 1350s, historically speaking. As far as the game is concerned, only a select few could be depicted from the wide range of native and foreign troops, be them standard issue or mercenaries.

The Basic list during the game's timeframe would include the following troop types.

- numbers correlate to possible tier placements on the tech tree - Ex. Varangian Guard would be on tier 5.

Stables

1. Hosarii - Light Cavalry, leather armour with javelins & lance
Hosarii Toxotai - Light cavalry, armed with bow and leather armoured
2. Trapezitae - Native Light Cavalry (Leather Corselet & Helm // Lance and Javelins)
3. Stratiotai - Pronoiar Heavy Cav in Kataphraktoi attire. *
4. Latinikon Tagmata - Frankish Heavy Cav (knights minus impetuous attribute), disappears after the Komnenian Dynasty (Chain Mail, Helm & Kite Shield // Lance and Sword)
5. Hetaireia Basilikon - Native Heavy Guard Cavalry in Klibanophoroi attire **
6. Kataphraktoi - Very powerful heavy cavalry. Heavily armoured.

Barracks

1. Akolouthoi - Town Militia infantry, light armoured and spear
2. Skoutatoi - basic infantry with spears, mail armour and shield
Epirote Greek Infantry - similar to the Skoutatoi, lighter armoured, only in Epirote
3. Kontaratoi - Native Heavy Infantry ***
4. Paramonai - elite Infantry regiment that replaced the Vardariots (Chain Mail, Helm & Shield // Spear and Sword)
Menevlatoi - elite heavy infantry, heavily armoured(more info needed to be gathered)
5. Dismounted Kataphraktoi - Powerful heavy infantry. Plate and Chain Mail, shield and sword

Archery

1. Psiloi - Native Light Infantry (Sling & Hand Axe)
2. Toxotai - Light Infantry Archers (Composite Bow & Hand Axe)
3. Peltastoi - Medium Infantry Skirmishers (Quilted Armor & Shield // Javelins & Spear)
4. Mourtatoi - Heavy Infantry Archers (Chain Mail // Composite Bow & Sword)
Peltastoi Enoplioi - Heavy Peltasts, leather and mail armour and large shield// javelins & spears
5. Toxotai Trapezountoi - powerful archers, leather armour with composite bow
