SVARDS
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Svards are the basis of the Ingvaxeonic forces. They carry a longsword, and a large, round shield, emblazoned with a white dragon. They are trained to respond to spoken command accurately and obediently, as they require many formations to be used during battle, the most usual being the 'shield wall', which is used to protect ranged units, by standing shoulder to shoulder, and locking each shield into a wall. They are outfitted with scale armour, which is dyed red, with a white dragon painted on their chests, as the red colour and white dragon allows for the rest of the army and officers to know who is fighting who. They also wear a metal helmet with a large crest and visor for the eyes. These troops are taken from the firstborn sons of peasants or merchants, and perform duties as they are needed.

ARKS
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Arks are the ranged units of the Ingvaxeonic army. They carry a longbow and quiver of arrows, as well as a single-handed sword in case of emergency. They are trained to fire, aim and move on command, bu tto not require an extensive amount of formation training. They are usually stood behind Svards on the battle field, although army commanders may change positioning as seems appropriate if necessary. Arks are a major component of Ingvaxeonic fortresses. They are outfitted with Leather armour, which is dyed red, with a white dragon painted on their chests, for identification by their own forces. They wear helmets with thick visors, and neck protection, as well as a metal crest. These troops are taken from the youngest sons, or sons considered too weak, or unfit to fight in any other capacity. They are usually taken from the peasant or merchant classes of Ingvaxeon.

BAYLES
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Bayles are a halberd-wielding unit in the Ingvaxeonic arsenal. They hold a relatively short halberd, with a straight-edged axe-like head, that also doubles as a spear. These units are used primarily for deterring cavalry attacks in conjunction with Kavalars. They are trained to keep in very close formations, such as the hedgehog formation, which created a thicket of sharp metal to dissuade any cavalry heroics. They are outfitted with partial plate armour, dyed red, with a white dragon painted on their chests, for ease of identification by officers and other forces of Ingvaxeon. These men must be the strongest in the army, to wield the halberd, and are taken from peasant classes.

KAVALARS
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Kavalars are the only cavalry unit in the Ingvaxeonic army. They are light cavalry, used for deterring enemy cavalry in conjunction with Bayles, for scouting and for driving a retreating enemy off the field. They are composed of sons of noblemen, as it is considered the only part of the army worthy of a nobleman to join, except being an officer. They carry one-handed swords, and are armoured with ringmail. This armour is not dyed, but the kavalars tend to wear long cloaks of red, emblazoned with a white dragon. Their helemts are plumed with red as well. They are trained to advance, attack and retreat on command, but do not require much formation training.

NAVY

ARK-SHYPP
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Size: Large
Cost: 30, 000

The Ark-Shypp is the largest warship in the Ingvaxeonic fleet. It has a firepower of 46 ballista, 23 a side, with six in the forecastle, sixteen on the lower deck and twenty-four on the upper deck. These weapons are manned by five people, two loaders, two winders and an officer, though these jobs may be delegated to all of them, in the case of casualties during battle. The ballista will fire large bolts, wrapped in a cloth soaked in pitch, and set alight just before firing. The objective of the Ark-Shypp is to burn the enemy ship to the waterline. They usually sail in a very orderly line formation, though they are permitted to engage at will if the line signal is taken down from the flagship. This vessel may also carry up to 150 Arks of the regular army.

SVARD-SHYPP

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Size: Medium
Cost: 20, 000

The Svard-Shypp is a smaller vessel that is primarily used in defence of Ark-Shypps. If an Ark-Shypp appears to be in danger of a boarding or ramming, Svard-Shypps are to lay alongside the offending enemy, and board, thus delivering the Ark-Shypp from capture. This ship carries up to 100 members of the regular army.

BAYLE-SHYPP

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Size: Small
Cost: 10, 000

So named because it acts as a Bayle, the Bayle-Shypp is used to ram other vessels, usually opposing archer-ships. It is distinctive in the Ingvaxeonic fleet, as it used lateen sails to sail closer to the wind, though it uses a conventional square sail on it's foremast. It is also unusual in having four masts, in order for as much speed to be gained to hit an enemy. It is used in conjunction with the Svard-Shypp, in case an archer ship attacks. The Bayle-Shypp is also armed with 8 ballista, 4 a side, which may be used in case of emergency. This also allows it to be used as an armed escort for merchant convoys, to dissuade pirating or privateering. It may also carry up to 50 members of the regular army.

HISTORY

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The history of the Ingvaxeonic goes back hundreds of years, when peoples from the mainland migrated North, after the last Ice Age. They lived a tribal life for hundreds of years, save but a few tribes that grew larger, and expanded their boundaries. One particular group, the Ingvaxeonic, that lived along the river they named Ryx, were to eventually conquer or assimilate the middle of thier islands, from the river to the Western coast. This faction began the process of conquering all of the mainland, earning a reputation for warlike methods. The Ingvaxeonic royalty married into or placed their own relatives on the thrones of other provincial kings, to make the chance of rebellion minimal. They had a prolonged war withe the Rike Nord that lasted for a long time. The end of the war coincided with the first measuring of time, the first time the country could fall under the title, Realm of Ingvaxeon. The first year that it was so, was named 1 RI, or Rike Ingvaxeon.

The Ingvaxeonic were a sea-going people, whether they had lived on the coast, or, as many capital cities were located, on the banks of the River Ryx. They developed from flat-bottomed canoes, to barges, to small sailing craft, over many generations, each ship growing taller, and larger. Fishing piers became ports of trade. In the year 108 RI, the island of Rike Vast was discovered. Of course, Rike Ingvaxeon claimed it as their own, with little consideration that it was already occupied. The Ingvaxeonic forces went to war, and were soundly defeated.

This led to a major revision of Ingvaxeonic forces, by King Alfred the Wise. The army was re-structured to be more obedient, and easier to control. This was the beginning of the first kinds of military discipline that the Ingvaxeonic would employ during their expansion. It included the formation of different kinds of units, such as the Svards, Arks, and later, the Bayles. The Kavalars were formed out of the nobleman that were rich enough to ride into battle. These divisions were observed by officers in the field, and a constant stream of information, of what did and did not succeed in the field, was filed into a large book of tactics. Since the lower orders could not read, it wa sofficers that studied this book to learn the ways in which the Ingvaxeonic could be victorious.

it took until 120 RI for the Rike Vast to be conquered, and instated as part of the kingdom. The Rike Ingvaxeon was able to develop now in peace. Mud roads turned to flagstone in the cities, what were once wooden mottes became stone keeps, and what was their green surroundings became sweeping walls, crownworks, hornworks and bastions, as the largest stone constructions in the land. Most particularly, the capital of the realm, Ingvar, was the most heavily defended fortress in the land, claimed to be impregnable. However, the thatch-roofed villages soon outgrew their walls into towns, and, particularly in Ingvar, turned into cities of tiled roofs, great trade and powerful production. Ingvar herself became a yellow glowing sprawl at night, from the masses of lanterns lit in her streets, which had grown wide to accomodate carts of all sizes. By 268 RI, the capitals of Rike Ingvaxeon were the biggest fortresses, commercial centres and production areas of the realm

The sea-power of Rike Ingvaxeon was ever on the rise. Naval architecture became a fashionable profession, and ships were getting longer range, and bigger loading capacity. News often came in towns about sailors who had seen lights in the dark, of ghost ships, or ships from across the sea. Such an idea caught the notice of the then Queen, Queen Ayrn the Bold, whom commissioned the first ships of the Ingvaxeonic Navy. They were cogs armed with four ballista, that formed an exploratory fleet. It charted and mapped Southern coastlines, and first went into battle against a mysterious foreign fleet, that sank them all by ramming, in the summer of 304 RI.

This caused a massive spur to the people of Ingvaxeon to build more ships should thier coastlines be threatened. Ships designs grew almost exponentially larger with every class, until two main classes of ship were designed. The Ark-Shypp, armed with great ballistas that fired burning pitch, and the Bayle-Shypp, designed to ram thier opponents. Private craft, owned by nobles, were often ready to volunteer to load up thier own raised regiments and sail with the fleet. This was the beginning of Svard-Shypps. By 334 Ri, they were an established class of ship.

In the year 440 RI, the Ingvaxeonic made their first peaceful contact with another empire, known as Basileia ton Bruschaniaon. This empire began a vigorous trade with the kingdom to the North, which in response began to expand their ports to allow for more and more cargo to be delivered. With priacy on the rise, convoys of ships were protected by Bayle-Shypps armed with a few ballista, to ward off unwelcome visitors. The two factions agreed to an alliance by 506 RI. The current date of the Ingvaxeonic calendar is 527 RI.
