The department for Ancient History at Humboldt-University Berlin has a colloquium, which is usually for scholars presenting their research or qualification thesis (M.A. and PhD). This week on Wednesday, there is a speech (including discussion afterwards) about Total War modding and it is public, so anyone interested can visit.

That's pretty cool.
Too bad I don't speak German, and live quite far from Germany.

Curse you Atlantic Ocean!
Ah, I'm sure someone will take notes for me and my friends south of the border.

Good publicity for the series! Too bad its all in German

Write an article for the competition. A meeting of minds and paper, fingers and keyboards. Many brave souls come forth from distant lands, Kings and Queens of far off Kingdoms send their best warriors, armed with ink and quill. The great beasts of the forest and wilds come to watch the human gathering, all is silent.

On a dark dark night, the outcome will be decided. Gathered around a campfire, the light glowing in the dark. All ye writers shall be judged and your submissions forever immortalised in the hallowed halls of the library.
Shinies will be given, as well as the esteem Librarian's choice award.

The competition has begun, there can be only
3 winners. Come, put your rantings on paper, submit them to me via PM and we shall both toast to your success.

Outwit, outlast, outwrite.

It's OK - once it is in written form we can run it through the Google translator and gain a full and thorough understanding of what was said.

Great news anyway

Perhaps we could get some video from someone in attendance?

I just tried to reach him at Berlin University. He's out for a moment but his collegue, who was at the discussion, said it might be possible he performed without manuscript. Anyway, when I'll have a chance to talk to him I will ask for it and try to translate it as well as possible. Anyone who feels inclined to get into contact with him:

I already sent him a mail.

I just arrived talking to him. Unfortunatelly there's no script 'cause there was no need to hand out anything written at the colloqium. He will have a look for the power point presentation he used and if it's not deleted will place it here. Summary of the event which had about 40 listeners in the auditorium: traditional historians are sceptical about the question whether computer based simulations are a suitable means to gain correct knowledge of history events (whatever "correct" will include in this case). The given interest of modders in historical correctness is assumed to only serve the gamers longing for utmost battlefield experience, but lacks any deeper understanding of conflicts and structures of certain historical episodes. This is not Kai's opinion neither mine, but it shows that a playfull approach to history is not very common in science. Up to me it's just the opposite: I think people who occupy themselves with history based strategy simulations will start to do some research afterwards to verify how close the game is to reality, and esp. ETW is a very good deal in that. Anyway, there was a professor of miltitary history present who instantly got the idea of how ETW could be used as very attracting tool. That's so far. I hope Kai will probably add some more details.
