I had to vote for Chaeronea. I know relatively little about it, but from the breif description of it in the first post, it sounds quite impressive. Alesia and Watling Street are also amazing Roman victories, but I think Chaeronea may get too little attention as a result of those being so popular. Chaeronea sounds to be one of the most hard-fought victories, as well as one that shows Roman discipline as being a huge factor in battles where Rome came out on top.

"Theodore Ayrault Dodge in his novel makes that clear, Marcellus, Fabius and Nero outranked him in skill."

Not to inspire hannibal89's ire, but I just need to clarify...isn't a novel a work of fiction? If so, then it can't really be used in a historical discussion, now can it. It would be the same if I used Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels to describe the Battle of Gettysburg to all of you...it won't fly. I admit, I know nothing of Mr. Dodge, and maybe you just misspoke. If so, I apologize. I just felt clarification might help. But if he IS a novelist, then maybe new sources are in order? Just a thought. No offense intended hannibal89.

Theodore Ayrault Dodge was a historian/novelist with a big love for Hannibal. But he also wrote books on Alexander and Napoleon. My one problem with him is I don't see him as an unbiased source for Hannibal. It seems too hard for him to find wrong points in Hannibal. I would not use him when talking about other characters of the Punic Wars and even for Hannibal, I myself, would not rely on him much simply due to his love of Hannibal. This view is obviously come into fierce fire from Hannibal89.

He never says Scipio is better. Never makes that statement and avoids the whole arguement as much as possible. Making clear distinctions between the two. If anything his a Hannibal fan considering he spent a whole book on the battle of Cannae and it's legacy. Not to mention the subtle and hidden favorism within the book. The man like Hannibal more. Just about anyone who reads the book can see that. Your basing the book on my personal opinion and preference of Scipio.

You're missing Cynocephelae - The 'Dog's Heads'. The hallmark of the new legion pitted against the Macedonian phallanx.

I say Alesia, caesar could have ran when the second army came, but he stayed, built a wall and waited patiently.

thats brave. so manny others would have taken their army and fled. but not Gaius Iulius. even tough if the Gauls would have figured out that simply waiting and besieging would starve Gaius army to death, he obviously accepted the risk and probably had a backup plan. Alesia was risky, verry verry risky. and a man has to be verry brave to stay there.

I always liked Alesia because it really shows all of Caesars strengths and weaknesses so I'd have to list that as my favorite victory although I'd argue that the battle that helped Rome the most was Cannae.

That was one of many battles Rome had against the old Macedonian Phalanx. Magnesia and Chaeronea both had phalanx.

Battle of Zama
The Battle of Zama was the final showdown between the Roman saviour Publius Cornelius Scipio and the fallen Hannibal. This important battle brought the Second Punic War to an end and completely destroyed Carthagenian power and put the put the African city at the mercy of Rome. The victory earned Scipio the cognomen "Africanus".
Of course Battle of Zama is the main masterpiece of the greatest and innovative roman general , he beated another universally known genius of war , so this places him above Hannibal as well , and together with Alexander ,Caesar and Napoleon , they are the 5 greatest generals of all times....
