What is it?
This mod revises the vanilla unit roster for Novgorod to provide some more appropriate units and some more historically accurate units.

Why has this been made?
The roster for the Russian faction in Vanilla M2TW was fine for a generic Russian faction. But since this faction has been changed to the Republic of Novgorod in Stainless Steel, not all units in the roster are appropriate. For example:
  • Tsar's Guard: While Novgorod did have heavy cavalry, they never had a Tsar.
  • Cossack units: Cossacks originate from southern Russia and the Ukraine, rather than northern Russia where Novgorod is situated.
Such units have either been replaced by something more appropriate, or simply renamed.

How does this mod change how Novgorod is played?

To make the Novgorod faction more historically accurate, greater emphasis has been placed on foot soldiers and cavalry rather than on horse archers. This is to help simulate the fact that Novgorod sat between the east and the west and was influenced by both.

Summary of changes:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
  • Sulitsi Cavalry replaces Boyar Sons
  • Dismounted Boyars replaces Dismounted Boyar Sons
  • Luchniki replaces Dismounted Dvor
  • Mounted Luchniki replaces Dvor Cavalry
  • Cossack Cavalry no longer recruitable by Novgorod
  • Boyars (Heavy Cavalry) added
  • Novgorod Home Guard (Heavy Spearmen) added
  • Peasant Crossbowmen added
  • Kazaks renamed to Pecheneg Horse Archers
  • Cossack Musketeers renamed to Streltsy and can now only be recruited after 1500 (along with all musket units)
  • Berdiche axemen now stronger and recruited from Castle barracks instead.
  • Edited models for Berdiche Axemen
  • Novgorod faction leader now appropriately called Knyaz
  • Starting family trees for both campaigns now historically accurate (as much as possible). Russian history buffs may notice a young Aleksandr Nevskii in the late campaign’s family tree.
  • Updated campaign descriptions.
  • Adjectives changed from “Russian” to “…of Novgorod” (includes Seljuk and Fatimid adjective changes as well)
  • Kingdoms Teutonic Campaign video now plays when starting a Novgorod campaign.
  • Small boost in trade value for furs near Novgorod
  • Holy Roman Empire will now be able to recruit Ritterbruder and Dismounted Ritterbruder from Teutonic Order Chapter Houses rather than Teutonic Knights. This is to make room for the new Novgorod units. Besides, Ritterbruder look soooo much cooler than the regular Teutonic Knights units.
