----Pre-Alpha overall aims----
Working grand campaign
A basis for the inactive modders of Westeros: Total War to pick up for if they every come back

----Details----
- a map of Westeros that stops just short of the Wall. Scripting a Wildlings faction and making a Wall model for the campaign mapA lot of research on the terrain types and the trade resources has already been done (just check the various threads at the Westeros site).
- 8 or 9 factions (Arryn, Tully, Stark, Lannister, Greyjoy, Baratheon, Martell, Tyrell and maybe Targaryen).
- Custom banners
- all units come from the vanilla game, they will just need light reskins and new names and descriptions
- 45-50 regions
- portraits for some family members (can come from Amoka's art)
- Custom loading screens, quotes from aSoIaF

----Faction List----
-House Martell
Spanish / Moorish influence - strong desert troops
Easily defendable starting location

-House Lannister
Richest faction

-House Tyrell
Very. Chivalric.
French influence - lots of cavaliers, paladins, chivalric knights etc.

-House Baratheon of Storm's End (Renly) / House Baratheon of the Narrow Sea (Stannis)
HRE Influence
Heavy Infantry, Heavy Swordsmen
Stannis has a large navy, Renly has Storm's End

-House Stark
Scottish influence - Northern troops
Largest amount of territory

-House Greyjoy
Viking influence - lots of ships and axe-wielding troops
Naval dominance

-House Tully
English or French influence. Lots of knights and also archers.
Best farmlands

-House Arryn
French influence - lots of knights
Easily defendable location

-House Targaryen

----Resources----
-Amoka (contact me if you want these pictures, I have a large set) and Morano's (http://www.morano.pl/) artwork for the series

Anyone want to join, please PM me. (note: I am not a modder as such, we just need to keep this mod together). This mod needs coders, a few skinners and some experts on aSoIaF. Thank you. There is a parallel thread on aSoIaF forums (http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php?showtopic=25181). Anyone wanting a signature can get one here (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b75/stormbringer_951/?action=view&current=Westeros-sig.jpg).

Thank you stormbringer951 for taking the initiative! Good job!
As suggested on the parallel thread: leave the Targaryens and the Night's Watch out for now.
Don't forget to add House Tyrell to the faction list.
It should be decided whether this mod starts at the beginning of A Game of Thrones or later. This will determine if Stannis or Renly as a faction should be included.

I am in the middle of my university exams and unable to help for the coming weeks/months. I am also no expert on ASoIaF-lore since I'm busy reading (almost done though) the first book, haha! But I'm very, very fond of Mr. Martin's work and I am eager to play this mod. My modding knowledge is limited to editing some of the .txt files. I will continue to observe the progress of this mod and I will give some input if I deem it useful and relevant. I wish you the best!

Impressive!

Some suggestions:

For House Tully - English or French influence. Lots of knights and also archers.

For House Baratheon - German/HRE influence - heavy knights and heavy foot swords.

For House Targaryen - heavy Byzantine.
Humbled to be under the patronage of Annaeus

As for the map, I was thinking about something like this:

(map from the boardgame A Feast for Crows)

Of course it needs adjustments and so on but I think the number of territories will lead to some good gameplay. The campaign would be shorter than vanilla M2:TW (that is, if you want to conquer the whole map). Perhaps later on we could make a map with every single (even insignificant) castle/settlement on it. That would roughly double the number of provinces. What do you think?

As for starting date, how about the date right before AGoT starts? Robert still sits on the Iron Throne and Eddard resides in Winterfel. Do you think the various Houses would be more balanced that way?
Or the day King Robert dies?
From your options, stormbringer951, I would opt for a).

I would have thought that the storyline would change too much if we did from the very beginning, but I think for now we settle for just after Eddard's execution / Robb and Tyrion's battles. We could include the others later (like territorial campaigns ).

Certainly, if we find a good mapper, we'll make your map (though I can't see the pic). Thoughts?

I found a map

of the boardgame that Gampie was talking about.

The official map is here

If a good mapper can try to turn this map into the sort of image above.

Faction icons could be converted from images here (http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/Gallery/Category/C35/).

You mean you can't see my imageshack picture? That's very odd, I can see it clearly. Have you blocked imageshack for some reason? By the way, I can't see your map too. There is no link to be seen in your post.
edit: never mind, I see you have found the link (on the ASoIaF board)

And concerning the starting date: let's settle for the date of Eddard's execution then. We need to get the ball rolling.

This just came into my inbox on a PM from Aeleoron9

I'd advice against making it all from scratch again, since the old mod was already playable, just not completed. Basically here's how the mod's like when we started hibernating. The map is basically done, with the wall like in the old screenshots. The houses based on original factions are on the map, the characters are all in, and on my build I could play the grand camapign just fine. But it's just a skeleton of the original game and needs alot of fleshing out, and that's what we should focus on.

Things not yet completed in the old build:

Map-concerned issues; resources, events, turn/year etc. This is the core of the whole mod, and AFAIK was all Marcus' territory.
Faction details; description, heraldries and interface artwork, character portraits and traits
Diplomacy, another hastle of codes and tuning
Battle stuff; we had a mostly complete unit roster along with rebels and mercs. We might not be able to get them all reskinned but at least we need new unit names and descriptions.

and other details like the guilds, the ancillaries, special events and so on. Tis alot of work to remake an entire campaign. Following the 'Lite' direction, though, maybe you or someone in charge should pick a few features to concentrate on in each build. If we could keep updating both here and TWC, hopefully we'll bring more attention and people beta-testing for us.

Aah. I can see it now. If we don't use Marcus and Aeoleron9's old alpha build, we can use this one. Thanks.

I would try to use the old alpha build first. What do you think? I'll let it up to you to contact Marcus since you're in charge.

What would be the timeline? because the events in the books only ;ast a few years, it would be hard to create a mod based on the books.

I think the timeline should be about 20 years. (yes, conserve your generals ) and that a month equals a turn. So very few building up, and lots of recruiting men to go off and die.

I thought that the minimum turn value was 0.50? also maybge you should consider staging it at the start of the Targaryin invasion a few hunderd years before the books?

Twelve turns per year is possible via scripting, and it's pretty much necessary if you want to depict events occuring in such a small timeframe as the books.

Personally I would choose to kludge the timeline slightly if necessary in order to provide the best launching platform for the war: Sometime after Robert's death but before the major battles of the war begin (or else, for example, House Tully would begin the game with it's army dispersed and it's capital under siege...) Inevitably things will work out differently in the TW setting however, Martell and Arryn took no direct hand in the fighting (yet) for example, but if they're a playable faction then they will.

An alternate provincial campaign based on Robert's Rebellion would be awesome, but too much work in addition to getting the main thing up and running. Maybe if that all went to plan.

There are alot of engine/coding problems, the endless summer for example. And should we disable buildings, if we're going with a multiple turns per year rate? All these were researched by Marcus, and I'm not sure how much he succeeded. If we're to continue the mod, we need someone to take up this job.

There are also problems with the battle system, in M2TW you can easily siege and take any castle the next turn. But it would be strange if say Storm's End was taken down in two turns, being neigh impenetrable and all. We also had some ideas about turning the crusade into a "claim throne" mode, but there's probably too much engine limitation on this stuff.

As for the beginning of the mod, I scripted an event(with help from Marcus) that will randomly decide whether Eddard gets executed, sent to the wall, or outright released. It will determine whether Starks/Tullys and Lannisters will go straight to war, or will the factions slowly build up their power etc. If we adopt this, then the timeline is pinpointed at before the 5-Kings war, and the factions will have more freedom to decide what strategy they'd like(what if the Greyjoy alliance had worked? for example)

Westeros:TW mod for Kingdoms! Team is now RECRUITING!
