the religious quotes thread.
i would like you to recite your favourite quotes, then explain what you think is meant by them. then i would like others to test them out according to their own belief systems! the idea is to test the universality of the quotes, i mean many can be seen as wise no matter what religion you belong to or even if you are an atheist etc.
e.g. he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.
this seams equally true to an atheist or persons of most religions. however there are some that believe the sword to have magical properties like druids and the samurai [Shinto], and that the hunter has divinity and a mutual respect between animal and man. this is extended to the same kind of respect between opposing warriors.
it is said that the celts used to send bands of warriors to attack other tribes when overpopulation occurs, be this true or not, we may say that certainly in ancient times war was a useful means of population control, without it there would be starvation and social devastation.
on another level dying of disease or old age in ancient times was a truly horrific thing, thus over time a ‘noble death’ would have been considered far more preferable. some mayan descendant on a documentary even suggested that some [non-prisoners] people would even offer themselves up for human sacrifice, in preferance to dying an ignoble death!
ok lets go on the hunt for truly universal sayings, quotes and notions. are all wisdoms relative?
