Milan has better stuff towards the end of the game, where you likely don't need it.

Venice gets their better stuff around turn 50-70 which makes them best.

And I haven't really played with Sicily so I don't know. I guess they're good because they have Italian Militia, knights, and the first fortress?

I've tried all of them, and the most fun, most interesting and most challenging faction is...

SICILY !!!

Interesting starting position with many options, advanced castle, good mid-game units but no late-game über-units:

Muslim Archers plus Armoured Sergeants plus Norman (Foot) Knights plus Mounted Sergeants = WIN

And I have to agree with Viking Prince: EVen better in Lands to Conquer.

Sicily! Pope can be a great help. Great units, easily defendable areas and you can go rage at Egypt and Moors. That way Pope likes you . I conquered the entire southern area really quickly.
Done:
Dominate MTW1
Dominate MTW2+Kingdoms excluding Isles
Hold the entire map but one settlement for 15 turns

Not done:
Get ETW
Hold the entire map but one settlement for 16 turns

I hate venice. So sicily or milan, and I tend to prefer sicily due to having a popewall to protect your northern border.

Sicily is just too boring a campaign. I find when I fight battles that the world of Islam provides more of a boring challnege of hit and run than honorable, brave, and exciting tactics of the western world. Venice...well I just HATE them. Milan is perfect for people who want to make a good buck while establishing a formidable dominion!

All Italian factions are great. Fully armored Dismounted Broken Lances look so terrific awesome and are way better than dismounted chiv/noble knights. Dismounted men at arms technically are dismounted chiv knights, and each of them have awesome unique units and terrific good militia units which certainly outmatch armoured sergeants.
Sincerely,

KoP

Voted Venice. useful unit roster and starting position is ok. close to Rome for diplomatic skullduggery and spread off down the adriatic for sneaky expansion elsewhere.

Milan. You start with two of the big five Italians cities, unlike Venice, and you can get two more by conquering some rebels and using the ridiculous amount of money you make to buy Bologna. The French and Germans are always willing to sell Innsbruck and Marseilles for cheap. Then it's just a matter of placing spies in Venice and attacking so you can take the city in one turn. The Pope will complain, but nothing will be done about it. And without their precious city, Venice is dead in the water. The Pope may not like the Milanese, but that's fine, you can buy the Pope.

The Republic of St. Mark for sure. Great starting position and I love Venetian Infantry and Stradiots. I'd pick Spain over any of these 3 though.

Venetian Heavy Infantry + Stradiots backed up by Musketeers, Pikemen, Venetian archers, and Caroccio Standards. Need I say more?

It is not titles that honor men, but men that honor titles.
