Download Dwarf Therapist and make sure he has woodcutting enabled.

Anyway, I just got my ass whooped again. The goblin ambushes were getting intense, a new one would show up every 5 minutes and every time their numbers would go up. Eventually there was a heavy one which was repelled by my 6 man army but at the cost of 2 deaths, 3 medium wounded and 1 light wounded soldier. While the soldiers hit the beds at the hospitals, an old random nemesis showed up in the caverns. A giant maggot with feathers, that is. This did not end very well as I had no defense against it and so the bloodshed was great. I figured that with a little luck, the chief medical dwarf would get my soldiers back on their feet to combat this ferocious beast. Unfortunately, a dwarven child went berserk and started (slowly) killing soldiers and wounded dwarves within the hospital. Figuring that they wouldn't be ready any time soon, I quickly drafted a new militia band, which quickly died. Though the militia plus my hunters managed to injure the maggot quite a bit, they were eventually all dead.

At this point it was all lost so just for lulz I released all imprisoned goblins, most of them ran right back to the entrance triggering all of my cage traps in the process. With the cage traps not being active anymore, I got another ambush of 2 goblin squads right next to the entrance. They killed all the unarmed dwarves and the injured maggot. The only living allied creature is a dwarf who fell into a cage trap and is now imprisoned. Eventually a new beast showed up, this time a leech which killed the elf leading one of the squads causing all the goblins to flee. Now I'm looking at a fortress housed by caged goblins, a caged dwarf, a leech destroying all property, a lot of corpses, a lot of loot, quite some miasma and a whole lot of blood.

Lesson of the day, pick a map with either tin or flux stones, copper doesn't protect you very well.

I can't find any good locations until I actually embark and embark and restart like 10 times. I found 1 good location after searching 3 times. Took so long, because creating maps take a long time.

This time I created a map, there was alot of damp soil was so annoying.

I'm certain that it would take a lot less time if I could just figure out how to use that custom world generator option...

You can use the same map over and over again. Just abandon your fortress and you can use the same world over and over again.

Also, learn how to read the map.

You can see beforehand whether there are aquifers, what stones are there, whether there are hills etc.

On the world map you can switch between several map modes with the "tab" key, IIRC. There you can see how much elevation there is, etc.

i have run into a potentially fatal flaw, the nearest cavern is in the 32nd level so i built my first farm by draining a lake into the area. I set up plenty of room for excess water to escape and all, but i didnt realize the floodgate would need a lever. It is almost always raining, so my dwarf cant instal the mechanisms now. so, is there any way to wall off or seal the hole(i dont remember what i used to build it) that water is coming through? I dont think its good for my farm if its always underwater....

Magma or collapsing natural walls into it is about only way, always, always add a floodgate and lever first, no matter how little you think you need it.

Also i usually import my metal myself, buy everything metal off caravans and melt them down, copper may be horrible protection but its mostly all my dwarfs have got.

Not that much, dwarf fortress still has hard lessons even for those such as me, I've made almost exact same mistake you mention in about 4-5 different fortresses this month, i should rush less.

So damp soil means there are aquifiers?
Yes and no, any square adjacent to water will be damp stone, if there's no water around to make it damp, its likely an aquifer, but remember aquifers are also infinite drains aswell as infinite water sources.

Someone mentioned not being able to find good embark spots, theres a app for messing with world generation, or if you a little lazy i can give you my worldgen file designed to make various fun worlds.

When you have lots of fun early on in the game, doesn't help on learning the game though

Just do what the post tells you to do.

"offsets in spoiler must be put in file named v0.31.12_graphics.ini in dwarf therapist/etc/memory_layouts/windows."

that'll make it work if you've got recent ver of dwarf fortress.

If file isn't there just make it.

Throw that in your world_gen.txt in data/init, its very volcanic world(obsidian all over), lotsa drainage so aquifiers shouldn't be to much of a problem, also lotsa variance, mostly forested worlds thou, since i was going for terrifying tropical broadleaf forest.

F*7%#ing expedition leader, i avert near catastrophe when giant cave spider pops onto edge of maps in caverns near my farms, massacre it, shortly after i get first imigration wave, i seal off my farms fully, only that retard expedition leader is locked outside, easy as, i let him in, he walks in, ogre charges in after, i order all my dwarf to run to my top storeroom and tell my military to charge.

3 of inital seven survive, all very unhappy, i set them back to mining, i quickly set up farms as im running out of food, draft all new dwarfs into farmers, about this time expidition leader packs a fit and destroys the entrance bridge making me unable to lock the front door, moments later he destroys my farm plot and most of my seeds.

Now that little pick is being ordered down into the abyss to die, its fitting since he pretty much doomed the fortress with a hissy fit, i should have left him outside the first time, i have to send all start dwarfs as another loss of a farm plot will doom me to starve, ill probably have to pick surface plants as it is.

Ironically I'll have 7 new immigrants, and they'll have skills, the only skilled one ill lose is engerneer, which ill sorely miss but hey.

Muahahaha, hopefully the adventure downwards will be interesting for the trio, im on the fence on weither or not to spare my engineer.

or i could get them all to plant gather and keep them from precious farms, hmm choices, unhappy dwarfs are risky..

Memo, add death chamber for destroying such annoyances in future.

I have the weird distinct feeling the expidition leader is some sort of traitor, or very well bearded goblin...
    edit.
Peaceful solution backfired, my farms remained safe, but after being stripped from military he attacked and beat the crap out of new militia leader and some other random dwarf standing nearby.... when they finally go beserk it'll almost be a blessing.
