I know that the original capitals can be turned into Huge Cities, but which ones can be turned into citadels?

    look in
    C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\DLV_ext\data\world\maps\base

then open regions txt. Do a search for "metropolis" in there. That should help you on your way.

Not a problem. These are pulled straight from the aforementioned file, and thus are in no particular order. If anyone wants to go through and put the settlements as they should be in regards to what faction controls them, be my guest. I don't know enough about the map to do that with all of them.

The same file tells you which settlement belongs to which faction.

That file doesn't appear to be a very good indicator of which settlements belong to which factions.

For instance, it labels Nottingham as a settlement of Denmark...which I'm reasonably sure isn't the case...

You are right, it's not the case. Denmark starts with no castle at all... I'm at work now, but I just started a campaign as the Danes recently, and had the intention of finding out the closest of these Metropoli' castles for me to take.
It just so happened that this thread was started, so now I don't have to search at all. But, I believe that I was supposed to get a starting castle, am I right?
