Thread: How-To: Make a ZoR

    Default How-To: Make a ZoR

A ZoR tutorial - This is how I made a ZoR. It also tells you how to make mercenaries recruitable from buildings. But it is a ZoR tutorial first and foremost.

    Step One:
First go to export_descr_buildings, and look for the line near the top, starting with "hidden_resources". Then add to the end of the line “welshbow” and save the file.

    Step Two:
Open descr_regions, and search for the Caernarvon entry. In the entry, look for the line containing resources like wine, textiles or camels (Note: the line probably won’t contain any of these resources, I just showing examples). Then, add “, welshbow” to the end of the line and save the file. You can add your resource to as many regions as you want, I am just doing one here for quickness.

    Step Three:
Go to export_unit_descr, and search for the Welsh Longbowmen Mercs entry. Add the factions you want to make the unit available to to the ownership line, like this:

    ownership slave, england

The figures in italics are the added figures.

    Step Four:
Now, go back to EDB, and search for the building you want the unit to be recruitable from. You will see the various unit entries for units below the building entry. Scroll to down to the buildings last unit entry then copy and paste any unit entry under the sun below this last entry. Then, in between the speech marks, replace the unit’s name with your unit’s name, in this case “Welsh Longbowmen Mercs”. Then, where the faction names are located (e.g { hre, } ), replace the faction name(s) with “england,”. So it should look like: { england, }. M2:TW is installed on my other computer, so unfortunately I cannot show you the exact entry. Then, add on to the end of your entry “ and hidden_resource welshbow”. I stress there must be two spaces before the “and”. Copy and paste the entry you have made into all buildings you want your Welsh Longbowmen Mercs to be recruitable in.

There you have it, a ZoR tutorial. If it doesn’t work for you, always make sure, you are using the Welsh Longbowmen Mercs as there may be another entry for normal Welsh Longbowmen, which would be invisible on the battlemap. Remember to check your system log thingy for errors, as it is amazingly helpful. Finally, as a last resort, pm me your problem and/or problem files. If this tutorial has been at all helpful, please show your appreciation by adding some rep for me.

EDIT: If you want to set up a ZoR, just add your resource to edb (welshbow in our case), add it to the region you want in descr_regions (Caernarvon region in our case) and add " and hidden_resource ***" at the end of the unit's edb entry (and hidden_resource welshbow in our case). EDIT 2: There is a maximum number of hidden resources, I think it is 63 or 64. EDIT 3: I'm not sure whether this needs to be done or not, but I'm adding it in for the sake of completeness. Social_infidel says you need to delete the map.rwm file before the hidden_resources will work. I think he maybe right. If it still doesn't work, e-mail me your non-working edu ,edb and descr_regions files so I can help you. A suggestion of what you want doing may help as well !

EDIT 2: The last time I looked at this thread was in December 2007; if you have any problems, please do not hesitate to PM me, as that is the only way I will be able to answer your question(s).

So, this allows the Welsh Longbow Mercs to be recruitable from buildings, not just as mercenaries? Nice job! This will be a very useful tutorial!

Thanks Goatbuster 3000, but just so everyone knows this tutorial should help you make any unit recruitable, just replace the particulars, like the ZoR unit, and region, and building, etc.

So, if we enabled a unit for every faction as well as add in the appropriate files, any faction could recruit a specific unit? Say the Turks take control of Caernarvon, they'd be able to recurit Welsh Longbowmen Mercs from their barracks/ archery range/ etc.

Yes, as long as they were in the ownership line in edu, and present between the {} in edb. But, if you wanted you could make them available to everyone everywhere, although that would defeat the point of the ZoR somewhat

And you'll have to keep in mind that there's a maximum number of hidden resources (I think 64, but not sure)

Yes, you're right alpaca the maximum number is 63 or 64 I think.

Ok, I was just thinking about the Area of Recruitment for some of the RTW mods, like RTR. I always liked this feature, and would love to see it implemented. This is very close, so kudos to you, Sabre!

    I would make this addendum:

For those of you adding new units to the game and/or want to turn non-mercs into AoR units, make sure to give the said unit the 'mercenary_unit' attribute in the export_descr_units. By doing so, you need only add a "4 merc" entry to the model_battledb to assign the unit's skin.

One other thing to add - I'm pretty sure you have to delete your map.rwm file before the hidden_resources take effect.

I've seen ZoR and AoR. Zone of Recruitment or Area of Recruitment.
Making units only available if you hold certain provinces. Like Longbowmen
should only be recruitable in the original English provinces no matter
if you have conquered France and built the right buildings in their provinces.
Better historical accuracy for some specialized units.

Zone of Recruitment... I never would have guessed taht. I was aware, that this tutorial teach how to create units, which are only available in some settlements, but the short form gave me sleepless nights. Thanks for the info.

Woo, haven't looked at this thread in a while. To the Turk, it should work in R:TW, can't see why not. And if anyone wants an AOR/ZOR scripter for their mod, I would be happy to oblige.

Well, that's because you need to add their entry in the EDB file under whatever builiding you want them to be recruited in. See the "How-To: Add units to other factions" thread for more help.

hi there i was wondering why you used the term "welshbow", was it just somthing you made up or did u find it somewhere in the files. As i used your tuetorial and it worked fine but i tried to do it for Mecenary german knights, which i shortend to "germknights" and it wouldnt work. i followed the teutorial but replaced "welshbow" with "germknights" and put them in a few HRE cities and in stables. Tyvm gr8 tuetorial btw
