Re: DLV Fan Contributions and Suggestions thread
Im a big fan been playing the mode for a while. I have a possible suggestions for the future.
What do you think about generals that are granted title for a region dont get penalized for moving around in that region.
Cant wait for new factions. Great work.

Re: DLV Fan Contributions and Suggestions thread
Heres another one for the think-tank.
Instead of regions having a "mercenary pool" where the mercenaries are kind of hanging around to you need them, thus paying for them. I think that the mercenaries and rebels should go hand in hand. Would a mercenary army just sit around, unpaid? No, they would either get paid or pillage for it, either way they got to eat.
Consider this. Do away with the mercenary pool all together. Then, as a begining of the turn pop-up, be given a message, such as, "Scouts report that there is a non-aligned army at "this regions" border. Should we approach them for hire, mei Lord?" You can either hire them right then and there, as a whole, not just the units that you want. Or take the chance that this same army will show up a few turns later as a blood-thirsty rebel army!
I suggest this because some people say that the merc-pool is to much of an advantage for the player, and some people say that the near-constant apperance of rebels becomes to much of a nuciance. Also, it adds more flavor...
Just another thought, twist it around and squeeze it out; tell me what you think?

Re: DLV Fan Contributions and Suggestions thread
rebels are a problem- i for one got rid of them by setting the spawn rate to 1000 or 10000 or so.
it is not fun anymore. and i can deal with them, the ai has larger problems than i have. and playing a faction with vast lands is no fun with sixtythousandandthree rebel full stacks spawning every turn in every region twice.
and- to be honest: rebels are no problem. within the first fifty turns they are hard to deal with- i grant you that. but when your economy is consolidated and you can build decent units, they aren't even worth the thought. send army, right-click, auto-resolve, done. but when i look at france for instance, sending full-stack after full-stack agains a smaller rebel force, constantly losing units, generals and most of all: offensive capabilities, i think it harms the ai much more than me.
what is worse: the devastation caused by rebel armies kills the ai.
another thing:
i like the crowning and authority stuff, but the ai can't handle it! within my turkish campaign two large empires simply collapsed for no apparent reason!
hre and france were grand, really, really powerful, and within ten turns all of their territory was conquered by milan, vanice and the poles after the cities went rebel. so- why is that? the reasons i can imagine are
a) offends the nobility
b) low authority
c) no money.
i checked, and both had over 50000 florins in their coffers.
can "factionIsLocal" be used? i would be happy if the new dlv edition made life even harder for the player and helps the ai a lot!
btw, couldn't the ai trigger for the crown be set to 100%? i think it is enough when you can gain the crown of a faction the is wiped off the map.

Ive got a prince on my campaign, Prince Charles of the Danes, He is very pious, very gay, and now despises the Papal Sates!
It made me think, how about a protestant reform possibility in this mod? I know elizabeth of the English was "historicly" responsible for this, but why not make it a possibility for pious-excommunicated factions like mine-own? sort of like the civil war scheme in the game, maybe a protestant reform could be added... Just another idea for the masses, from the mouth of a Baptist.
EDIT: Hallelujah!

Re: DLV Fan Contributions and Suggestions thread
Call me a bonehead, but I only just noticed that DLV starts the game in 1180 AD instead of 1080 AD. I also noticed the factions are not updated to reflect this, and that is a real shame because 1180 AD is an important year in the Middle Ages AND a lot of the leading figures of this period are well known and very interesting. Sooo....here's a plea to repman and the boyz to update the Factions Leaders and their families. Since I know this involves a fair amount of text editing, I'm coating my plea with some sugar in the form of the a researched list of the relevant persona's, as accurate as I could find info for, with some observations about each faction:
ENGLAND
Faction Leader: Henry II
FL's wife: Eleanor of Aquitaine
Faction Heir: Prince Richard "The Lion Hearted"
Family Member: Prince Geoffrey
Princess: Princess Mathilda
Up and Coming Family Members; Prince John {i.e. Robin Hood's nemesis}
Notes: The first Angevin, or Plantagenet, king. Was also Count of
Anjou {i.e. the Angevin name} and marriage to Eleanor brought the Duchy
of Aquitaine into the English demesnes.
His struggles with Phillip II Augusts for the Angevin demesnes was
one of the great grudge matches of the Middle Ages
The senior son was actually Henry the Young but that would cause issues
in descr-strat.txt and Richard and John are by far the better known
so again we fudge a little.
FRANCE
Faction Leader: Phillip II Augustus
FL's wife: Isabelle of Hainaut
Faction Heir: Prince Louis
Family Member: Prince Phillipe
Princess: Princess Marie
Up and Coming Family Members: none
Notes: Philip co-ruled with his father in 1179 and alone starting in 1180.
His struggles with Henry II of England was one of the great grudge matches
of the Middle Ages.
His first child wasn't actually born until 1187, so we have to fudge.
Same with spelling for younger son, so descr-strat wouldn't flake out.
HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE
Faction Leader: Frederick I Barbarossa
FL's wife: Beatrice
Faction Heir: Henry
Family Member: Conrad
Family Member: Phillip
Princess: Princess Sophie
Up and Coming Family Members: Prince Otto, Prince Conrad
Notes: This guy is the King Arthur of German legend, rumored
to carry the Spear of Destiny and to be sleeping under the
Mountain awaiting Germany's need. He was a major mover
and shaker behind the Third Crusade. He died during the "Great
Crusade" with Richard the Lion Hearted and Phillip II Augustus
SPAIN
Faction Leader: Alfonso VIII
FL's wife: Eleanor
Faction Heir: Henry
Family Member: Ferdinand
Princess: Princess Berengaria, Princess Urraca
Up and Coming Family Members: Princess Blanch
Notes: The leader of the Reconquista who broke the Almohad
Caliph at Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. His wife was the
daughter of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine.
VENICE
Faction Leader: Orio Mastropiero
FL's wife: ?
Faction Heir: Enrico Dandolo
Family Member: ?
Princess: ?
Up and Coming Family Members: ?
Notes: Venice was an important player in the Mediterranean
region, but no single family / ruler really dominated
in this period as the Doge was an elected position.
SICILY
Faction Leader: William II
FL's wife: Joan
Faction Heir: None
Family Member: None
Princess: None
Up and Coming Family Members: Bohemund
Notes: His bride was Joan, the daugher of Henry II and
Eleanor of Aquitaine. Historically their son dies in infancy
in 1181 and they have no other children, so his crown
is seized by force by one of his illegitimate cousins.
MILAN
Faction Leader: ?
FL's wife: ?
Faction Heir: ?
Family Member: ?
Princess: ?
Up and Coming Family Members: ?
Notes: Milan was actually a "democratic"
municipality during this period. The Milan
ducal faction is completely fictional. However,
the LOMBARD LEAGUE of which Milan was a
dominant member was not fictional and at the
Battle of Legnano in 1176 it stopped
Frederick Barbarossa from conquering Italy
for the Holy Roman Empire. The Lombard League
included Genoa and Bologna.
SCOTLAND
Faction Leader: William I "The Lion"
FL's wife: Ermengarde de Beaumont
Faction Heir: Alexander
Family Member: None
Princess: Princess Margaret
Up and Coming Family Members: Princess Isabella, Princess Marjorie
Notes: Spent much of his reign trying to regain Northumbria {York}
from Henry II's England. His wife's dowry was Edinburgh Castle.
BYZANTIUM
Faction Leader: Manuel I Comnene
FL's wife: Maria of Antioch
Faction Heir: None
Family Member: None
Princess: Princess Maria, Princess Anna
Up and Coming Family Members: Alexios
Notes: An energetic Emperor involved in war and
politics with almost all the factions in the game.
Dies in 1180, the Empire falls apart almost
immediatly thereafter as his heir, a minor, is
overthrown and chaos ensues.
RUSSIA
Faction Leader: Sviatoslav III Vsevolodovich
FL's wife: Mariya Vasilkovna of Polotsk
Faction Heir: Vsevolod
Family Member: None
Princess: Princess Eudoxia
Up and Coming Family Members: None
Notes: During this period "Russia" actually consisted
of the Grand Principality of Kiev, of which Novogorod
was a part.
MOORS
Faction Leader: Abu Yusuf Ya'qub
FL's wife: ?
Faction Heir: Yaqub
Family Member: ?
Princess: ?
Up and Coming Family Members: ?
Notes: Not a reign of note, but his Faction Heir will
be a grand opponent for the Reconquista.
TURKS
Faction Leader: Kilij Arslan II
FL's wife: ?
Faction Heir: Kay Khusrau
Family Member: ?
Princess: ?
Up and Coming Family Members: ?
Notes: Fought Byzantine Emperor Manuel I numerous times,
allied with both Nur ad-Din and his son Saladin, destroyed
the German army in the 3rd Crusade after the death of
Frederick Barbarossa
EGYPT
Faction Leader: Saladin
FL's wife: Shajarat al-Durr
Faction Heir: Al-Aziz
Family Member: Al-Zahir
Princess: ?
Up and Coming Family Members: ?
Notes: Deposed the Fatimid caliphs and founded
the Ayyubid dynasty. Captured Jerusalem for
the Muslims, and his conflict with Richard the
Lion Hearted was the defining moment of the
"Middle Ages"
DENMARK
Faction Leader: Valdemar I "The Great"
FL's wife: Sofia of Minsk
Faction Heir: Canute
Family Member: Valdemar
Princess: Princess Sophie
Up and Coming Family Members: Princess Margaret, Princess Rikissa
Notes: Tumultous reign torn by civil war.
Have to work up different spelling for his second son to avoid
descr-strat issues with same names.
PORTUGAL
Faction Leader: Alfonso I "The Conqueror"
FL's wife: Maud of Savoy
Faction Heir: Sancho
Family Member: None
Princess: Princess Mafalda, Princess Urraca
Up and Coming Family Members: None
Notes: Broke Portugal away from Castille / Leon and
was the first acknowledged King of Portugal by
Pope Alexander III in 1179.
POLAND
Faction Leader; Casmir II "The Just"
FL's wife: Helene of Moravia
Faction Heir: Leszek
Family Member: Conrad
Princess: ?
Up and Coming Family Members: ?
Notes: Duke of Cracow, never crowned king, but
at the Congress of Leczyca in 1180 the polish
nobility and clergy grant his descendents the
hereditary right to the Crown of Poland.
HUNGARY
Faction Leader: Béla III
FL's wife: Agnes of Antioch
Faction Heir: Emeric
Family Member: Andrew
Princess: Princess Margaret
Up and Coming Family Members: Princess Konstancia
Notes: A strong ruler who moved to expand Hungary's
demesnes almost as soon as the Byzantine Emperor dies
in 1180. Physically a very large man.
PAPAL STATES
Faction Leader: Alexander III
Notes: Alexander III dies in 1181 {set age to 60}, which
should make the game start rather interesting in terms of
the curial succession. Was a strong opponent of Frederick
Barbarossa, who opposed his accession to the Papacy by
having his own pope {Victor IV} nominated. This ended
after the Lombard League defeated the Emperor at the
Battle of Legnano. Also put Henry II in his place
vis a'vis the Becket affair, crowned Alfonso I
as the first King of Portugal, and put Scotland and
its king under interdict in 1181.
MONGOLS
Faction Leader: Genghis Khan
FL's wife: Börte Ujin
Faction Heir: ögedei
Family Member: Jochi
Princess: Khojen Beki
Up and Coming Family Members: Chagatai, Tului
Notes: Didn't really come on the scene for another
40 years. Was the first to really unite the various
clans into the Mongol identity, and was the first
titled as Khagan.

Re: DLV Fan Contributions and Suggestions thread
i would have liked to see protestants in the game also, but the reform didn't really start until around the 1496 or so with martin luther, so it didn't really exist at all during the vast part of the game, but could have been a cool late game emergance along with the new world. i think the devs of the game ought to implement a way to have family member sshare names, obviously there were numourous family member with the same name during these times, and it would help bring in that possiblity of adding to the dynasty with ur faction leader being john doe VII

I agree. Its not right that the game cannot count the times one family uses a name and justify this with a roman numeral.
@wanderingwayne
Before you mentioned it, I didn't care that we are just using the 1080 kings. But, these ARE some heavy hitters, for the first generation and the second. Also, Ive always wanted a starting Pope that was on a deathbed within the first 5 years or so...

you can find the following in the config-file:
show_banners = 1
change this to:
show_banners = 0
then the banners should disappear on the battle-map. (btw, wrong thread i think...)

Re: DLV Fan Contributions and Suggestions thread
is there a way for princesses and diplomats to hire mercenaries.. but only in it's own faction lands..
and maybe a trait for generals and family members, something like " epic hero" that appears after few heroic victories.. " he has proven him self as a general, leader and a human.. he inspires many.. warriors want to follow him to glory and history.. etc." recruitment cost and upkeep -50%..??
what u say..?
and maybe the opposite of that one.. after a character has lost few battles with devastating defeat,.. recruitment and upkeep goes up.. because of that man's reputation..?

Excellent idea on the heroic victories and devestating defeats... though I doubt that a human-player is going to have to many of the later, just the AI... which would create another balancing issue, in and of itself.

How about this one concerning your AI controlled (reinforcements) armies. Simple commands for their entire forces, such as:
1. Advance
2. Hold your ground
3. Attack
3a. Attack with Cav
3b. Attack with infantry
3c. Attack with missle units
4. Change to "this" formation
5. Withdraw
We all know that our reinforcements tend to be more like pedestrian onlookers sometimes.

and his children would get "molested as a child" trait that would give them piety + or - 5.. or something like that.. they could be a really rotten part of the family tree..

I hear ye. I believe CA got worried about the parents and potential for bad publicity. So, they didn't take the "evil" traits as far as they used to.
I think that with this current Total War game, they left out all the "molester" traits. If my memory serves me correct, there were some "likes little boys" traits in games past. Though I can't recall which ones.
But, the modders can make all the traits we'd want. I think some young-bum-licker priests are accurate, maybe not desireable though.
