caliph An-Nasir
AHMAD an nasir li-Din Allah bin AL HASSAN al mustadi (1158 - 1225) (Arabic: الناصر لدين الله) was the 34th Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad from 1180 to 1225. His pious title means Defender of the Faith. He attempted to restore the Caliphate to its ancient dominant role. He not only held the Capital in strength, but extended his dominion into Mesopotamia and Persia. He reigned from 1180–1225, and is considered the last strong 'Abbasid caliph before the destruction of the dynasty by the Mongols
[edit] Events During his Caliphate
In the early years of his caliphate, his goal was to crush the Seljuk power and replace it with his own. He incited rebellion against the Seljuk Sultan. The Khwarizm Shah, Tekish, at his instigation, attacked the Seljuk forces, and defeated them. Tekish, recognized now as supreme ruler of the East, bestowed on the Caliph certain provinces of Persia that had been held by the Seljuks.
An-Nasir sent his vizier to Tekish with some gifts, but the imprudent vizier so irritated the hot-tempered Tekish, that Tekish attacked the Caliph's troops and routed them, the khwarmids wanted to rule iraq and depose an-nasir and install a new puppit caliph. Thereafter hostile relations prevailed for many years. The Caliph assassinated a governor of Tekish by using an Ismaili emissary. Tekish responded by having the body of an-Nasir's vizier(Ibn qasab), who died on a campaign against him, exhumed, and the head stuck up at Khwarizm. Irritated at this and other hostile acts, the Caliph retaliated by treating with indignity the pilgrims who came from the East under Khwarizm's flag. But beyond such poor revenge, he was powerless for any open enmity.
Tekish's son, Muhammad II of Khwarezm, annoyed at the actions of the Caliph, set up a Shi'a caliph to paralyse an-Nasir's spiritual power. Following up this act, he turned his army on Baghdad. In response, an-Nasir appealed to Genghis Khan, the rising Mongol chief, to check Muhammad's progress, but it was too late: Muhammad had already taken Eastern Iraq. But before he could invade Baghdad, the weather forced him to return to Khorasan.
The caliph soon found his diplomacy bearing evil fruit. The steppes of Central Asia were set in motion by Genghiz Khan, and his hordes put to flight the Khwarizm Shah, who died an exile in an island of the Caspian. Meanwhile Saladin, when hard pressed by the Crusaders, appealed for help to an-Nasir, who, caring for little beyond his own aggrandizement, contented himself with sending a store of naphtha, with men to use it against the invaders in the field.
Besides his occasional conquests, he held Iraq from Tikrit to the Gulf without interruption. He is described as having been an oppressive ruler. There are instances, however, in which when appealed to, he interposed in favor of the weaker party — though partly from the fear of too powerful antagonists. His long reign of forty-seven years is chiefly marked by ambitious and corrupt dealings with the Tartar chiefs, and by his hazardous invocation of the Mongols, which so soon brought his own dynasty to an end. But in his day, there was comparative peace at Baghdad; learning flourished; schools and libraries were promoted; while refuges for the poor, and other works of public interest, were encouraged.

but when he became a caliph he choosed this title ''al mutawakel alallah'' which means jaafar who always trust god.

Well I'll be the first to say: good work and keep it up!.
So these names and title are specific to Abbasids and not generally Arab names and titles ?

Right, if I understand correctly now, these names are of ACTUAL Abbasid family members. Impressive.

Since the Abbasids are the only faction with the title of Caliph, should their faction leader, or faction in general, have an extra public order bonus? I mean, the Muslim populations in general did feel happier being under the rule of the Caliph moreso than a secular sultan or bey. It'll make the title Caliph something to actually enjoy and notice instead of it being one of the many substitutes for 'King' like in vanilla M2TW. (Grand Duke, Duke, Emperor, Sultan, etc. No difference in any of these titles).
I think, to reflect the religious aspects of the Medieval Muslim people, a public order bonus to the Abbasid Caliphate faction is in order.
Hey Sher Khan,
I was planning on making a the Caliph title a "ancilliary" that can be gained or lost among muslim factions + all the effects you mentioned.
Any thoughts?
Is it possible to only have that title be given to one, maybe two, generals in the entire game? If any muslim faction could attain the caliph title, how would he be chosen? The general with the highest stats in the map? Or a title that comes and goes with being the largest faction territory wise?
Also, I think it'd be best to make the Abbasids have a permanent caliph title and bonus, making them unique in a way. There can be another caliph that gains that title somehow, but I think it'd be silly to have an Abbasid Caliphate faction without a Caliph as its head. Their caliphate, of course, was hereditary at times, so it would stay within their faction.
I can give the caliph faction leader a permanent caliph "traits". Sure.
My idea of the Caliph "title" (ie ancilliary) is this:
- It starts with An Nasir the Abbasid faction leader
- Other Muslim factions can get the title by killing the Caliph
- Only the Faction leader get the title and it stays for life
- Its passed down to the heir
Wouldnt that be more like a title?
I know for example that Al-Qahira had a Caliph and he submitted under Saladin's rule, he ruled only in name, but mainly acted as a symbol of a religious leadership. The Wazirs, Qadis, Amirs, and Ulama held more power then he did after the initiall fall of the Caliph in Baghdad.
Also, not to be a stickler, its "Al-Nasir"
If that's moddable, than I say go for it. As long as you don't have 15 people running around calling themselves Caliph at one time, lol.
