Please help me help your MTW2 gaming experience improve by leaving me feedback about the mod. Report bugs here, or leave any kind of feedback related to this release.

Download the v 1.0 Beta here.

    Wow, its out!

Played a little as Sicily. Getting quite a few blank names popping up. I'm using plain old vanilla M2TW 1.1 with no other mods installed.

Will do, de Rougemont. Time is at a premium this weekend with South by Southwest festival music to go hear, but I'll load it up and look for errors.

Appreciate it guys. As soon as I start getting feedback I'll start smashing bugs

Francis, how frequently are you seeing blank names? Also, can you tell if it is a certain type of name not appearing (you can tell during a long campaign when certain names never appear)? What is the ratio (guess) of names appearing to names not appearing? Are there any blank names at the beginning of the campaign, or after you start creating characters later?

Got it; play through a campaign if you can and see how often it happens. I've have only personally play-tested and debugged Venice, HRE and England. The rest are suspect.

I use the files with the Deus lo vult mod.
Maybe thats the problem? And how could I remove the bugs?
What can cause it? And why are ; signs after some names?

Well starting on the first turn I would say after moving out individual units from the armies about 60% of their captains names were blank.

Next turn I trained a couple of agents and a few more units. Both agents were blank and same percentage of roughly 60% blank for captains.

I haven't had a chance to play more than a handful of turns yet.

This is very strange. I started a campaign as both the Hungarians and the Sicilians and started pulling units out of the armies to see if the names they were assigned would show up. For both factions I got a %100 named characters. I'm not sure what would cause so many of your characters to be nameless. Whatever it is, it must be something that is effecting your game but not mine.

Just to check, have you both installed the names.txt file in the "Medieval II Total War\data\text" folder?!

Odo, your names.txt of course will have to be in the Deus lo Vult folder that corresponds to the above.

If you have done the above, try deleting the names.txt.bin file, leaving only the names.txt file there. When the game restarts, it will create a completely new names.bin.txt file automatically.

Actually, I'm happy to hear this as it means there weren't any bugs. However, other people will probably make the same mistake. I'm going to have to learn how to use an installer utility.

Anyway, I bet Black Francis did the same thing. There's just no way there would be that many bugs.

    Hmmm,
My names txt is in the MIITW/data/text.
I tried deleting the bin file in the text folder but no use. Maybe it is a problem with my bat file. I have it inside MIITW and not data. Is that right?
Is there a specific name I should have given my batch file?
I simply put the specified text in the notepad and saved as a bat file.

No, the batch must be working because if it weren't you would be seeing all vanilla names (because the program, without the batch, reads the PAK files). And yes, it should be in the MTW2 folder. Hmmm. And you're sure the descr_names.txt and descr_names_lookup.txt are in the /data folder (you don't want them in the data/text folder)??? The only file that should be in the /data/text folder is the names.txt.

What is that? You are using vanilla MTW2 right? I've never seen that file in the text folder before. Did you hand create the text folder? :hmmm: I am at a loss at the moment... When's the last time you did a clean reinstall for MTW2?

I hand made the text folder. I have no idea what this file is. I guess I must be getting it instead of a names.bin file.
I tried deleting it but it reappears.

    FactionIconSubTitles.txt.strings.bin

Edit: Total clean install this very evening. I even wiped the remaining Sega directory before reinstalling.

So you are saying that the game isn't creating the names.txt.bin file, but is creating these other things?

Those other files shouldn't be there. Are there any strictly .txt files there, or only the names.txt and those strange .bin.txts?

only the names.txt and that weird file (it is just one file). No names.txt.bin being created.

    Very weird.

Yes, this is the problem then. Hmmmm. Let me attach the name.txt.bin file you need and then you can test it. However, I think you are due for a clean install. I'm really baffled as to what that's happening. That's usually when I start deleting the badness.

Hmmm, I'm not being allowed to upload files right now.

Strange, mine is showing up as a .strings file; I thought it was supposed to be a .bin. Try it out and let me know. Isn't late over there?
It is almost 1 and I have work in a few hours. Anyway, I reinstalled tonight but I will have another reinstall-reinstall party tomorrow after work.

I really must go to bed in a bit.
