Thread: Adding a building to Carthaginian culture

    Default Adding a building to Carthaginian culture

    Hi;

    I've encountered a bug while modding for ROP, (uses RTW 1.5), which seems to be hardcode-related. I'm wondering if anyone else encountered it, and if there's a workaround.

    My issue is that a piece of building code works perfectly for any given RTW culture, except Carthaginian.

    My biggest problem is that not so many mods have buildings with multiple upgrade options, thus there's not much material to compare my code with. If anyone knows mods where multiple upgrades are already used, and working for the carthaginian culture too, please let me know.

    If anyone wishes to test my code, and see if I missed something, here's the code:

    (Notes:
    -The code is intended for RTW 1.5 vanilla
    -RTW starts up with this code, and you probably are able to play as well, but the problem is that when you close the application, you'll get some Windows error message instead of a nice -show_err report. That's the one I need to get rid of.
    -Like stated above, the code makes this windows error message show up ONLY if the used faction is of carthaginian culture. Changing this faction's culture in descr_sm_factions.txt seemed to solve the problem altogether
    -I've heard reports that allowing the highways to be built by a carthaginian faction, also can cause problems. I haven't tested this myself, but it could have something to do with the problem I'm encountering now.)

    Temporary Administration \n\nUpon the conquest and subjugation of a city, there is a lot of work to do. Most of the populace (the ones who are still there) is in upheaval, and with no centralised power the situation could easily degenerate into riots and looting. A military presence does a lot to ease the transition, but even this has to be well-planned. Before new settlers can be brought in from the metropolis in any great numbers, temporary authorities must be established to sort out all the loose ends in the city and set up provision for government. Having done this, the military authorities can withdraw and make way for an organised local government.\n\nOn conquest of a foreign city, Greek factions send out colonists from their capital (the 'metropolis') to settle in the city, implanting a trustworthy Hellenic population.\n\nBasic troops can be levied here, though organisation is not complex enough to allow more efficient recruiting.

    Friendly Ruling Faction\n\nHaving completed its temporary administration, the conquering forces will obviously not wish to see all their good work of liberation undone by allowing a hostile government to come to power. It does not matter exactly what sort of government is set up, be it a tyranny, an oligarchy or even a fledgling attempt at common citizenship and (gasp) democracy. What does matter is that the ruling power is well-disposed to the needs of the metropolis, and can be relied upon to knuckle under without asking too many questions. However hard it is for a Greek to admit it, societies are always riven with factions, be they the aristocrats, merchants, farmers or craftsmen, and one of these factions will generally be willing to offer the support of the conquered city in return for power. To unconcerned eyes, it may even appear that the ruling faction has genuine autocephaly, making the city attractive to foreign investment.\n\nWith the city more or less organised and able to govern itself in the interests of its metropolis, it can call upon the military support of more and more of its citizens, allowing a fairly comprehensive levy.\n\n

A local man is chosen to become 'tyrant' over the city; the ancient Greek word 'tyrant' does not necessarily imply cruelty as it does in English, but nonetheless cruelty is quite possible when it is necessary to keep a populace subdued. Once in power, the tyrant can govern the affairs of the city to suit his Makedonian masters. Should he have any trouble, there will always be plenty of advice ready and available from those same masters. The tyrant himself has something to fear, as he is forced at once to keep the people in check and keep his overlords happy, something that is not an easy task.\n\nNow that the city has a fairly comprehensive government installed, it is able to mobilise a reasonable number of the local soldiers in the interests of Makedon.

    Militia Barracks have better facilities to train and house semi-regular soldiery. They can be improved as the town, its population and wealth grow. Being citizens-at-arms, militia have chosen to defend their homes and loved ones, but they may not be as 'professional' as full time soldiers. Their barracks are clean, but lack creature comforts - these men are here to learn the skills of war and defend Rome, not enjoy themselves!

    The Hall of Heroes is a place where warriors gather to carouse until senseless, boast about their exploits and (hopefully) pass on warfare skills in between the carousing (carousing is like drinking, except it involves singing rude songs, spilling drinks and occasionally killing someone for a bit of a laugh). In this manly setting, warriors learn their skills, boast of bravery and plan future conquests!

    A City Barracks is a major building in any town, allowing many troops to be trained here. It is a symbol of the military might of the state, and a vital part of the army's support structure.\n\nThe men trained here have a real stake in the community, one worth defending. The skills gained allow them to fight as organised formations, something that takes time and discipline to learn to do properly.

    Subject Ruling Faction\n\nThe relationship between the city and its metropolis has clearly become extremely intimate. Though in theory the city has its own choice of government and its own ruling faction, it doesn't seem to spend so much time looking to its own policy concerns. The rulers make regular visits to the metropolis and various lieutenants are seen making return visits to the city, discussing matters of government with the ruling faction. Ordinary people may look askance at this, but then again there is not too much to complain about. It is, after all, thanks to the metropolis that the city is free and safe in the first place, and it does no harm to honour the metropolis for these gifts.\n\nIn military terms, the city has essentially handed over its defence to the metropolis and no longer makes any vestige of its own foreign policy. All Hellenic military settlers can now be mobilised to fight for their metropolis.

    Subject Oligarchy\n\nThe ruling oligarchy of this city is quite clearly and openly in thrall to the metropolis. It has long been realised that the government was hardly independent, but now there is scarcely even an attempt to hide the fact. Members of the oligarchy are receiving stipends from the government of the metropolis, and in return the metropolis is sending imperious officials to make sure that the city does exactly what it is told. The local aristocracy benefits greatly from this, but the ordinary folk do not. They are heavily taxed and forced to work hard in the service of their betters, yet they see little of the results being used to help them. Instead, they see the fruits of their labours going to a distant metropolis, and they resent it. Having said that, the metropolis could easily deploy a garrison of occupation to keep the ordinary folk quiet.\n\nThe ruling oligarchy is blatantly no more than an outpost of the metropolis, serving its interests in all foreign and domestic affairs. All local Hellenic troops can unquestioningly be levied by the metropolis.

Before the reforms of Marius, the troops trained here are citizen-warriors: men who have a real stake in defending the community. After Marius' changes, the soldiers are hardened professionals.\n\nAll barracks for the Roman Legions are built to an efficient standardized ground plan: no matter where in the world a Legionary is sent to enforce Roman peace, he will always know his way around, and where he is expected to be at all times.

    {urban_colonial_barracks_seleucid_desc}
    Athenian Land Division\n\nSince the recent reforms of Solon, the great Athenian statesman, Athenian society has been divided up into several sections based on wealth. The top class of citizens are the Pentakosiomedimnoi, or those whose estates can produce five hundred (pentakosioi) bushels (medimnoi) of wheat a year. Next come the Hippeis, those men walthy enough to afford horses and whose estates produce roughly three hunred bushels of wheat a year, followed by the Zeugitai (those who own at least one pair of oxen) and finally the Thetes, the manual labourers. In addition of course there are slaves and resident foreigners, but they do not have citizen rights. This is a progressive way of organising city life, intended as a compromise between oligarchy and democracy. It may indeed provide the basis for any future democratic movement, however unlikely that may sound at the moment. The Klerouchia Athenaia allows for innovation and enterprise, and foreigners are welcomed too. At the same time however, it makes sure that everyone knows their place - the Athenian state is firmly in control. When implanted into foreign lands it is very useful for keeping local barbarians in hand.\n\nThe Klerouchia Athenaia allows for full Athenian citizenship and as such offers the Athenians access to their whole recruitment roster.

    Equal Government of the Ionian Community\n\nIt is important among a loose confederation of city states such as the Ionians have, formed to unite against a common enemy and preserve their freedom, that cities have their individual voices heard and their interests protected. By granting a city a vote in the strategy of the free Ionian cities, the ruling classes are glad to be acknowledged and the common people can rest assured that, in theory, their interests are being protected. A sense of camaraderie among Ionian cities can be instilled, and it is entirely necessary if their liberty is to be defended. Foreign investors are easily attracted to a city that has such acceptance from its peers, and a spirit of debate and intellectual stimulation can be fostered.\n\nBy granting a city the status of an equal among other Ionians, its full recruitment roster becomes available, as the people of the city see that they are fighting for a common goal alongside their kinsmen from other states.

    {urban_colonial_barracks_greek_cities_desc}
    Spartan Mess Halls\n\nSince the reforms of Lykourgos, the great father of the Spartan constitution, the syssition has formed the building block of common Spartan society. Every male Spartiates (full Spartan citizen) is trained from birth to become a professional soldier, and upon coming of age he joins his comrades in the mess halls where he will live and eat with them. The Spartans are served by slaves, the Heilotai or Helots, who attend to their estates and their personal needs, while a class of free (non-citizen) men, the Perioikoi, fulfil the role of craftsmen, merchants and other supplementary trades. The three hundred most significant Spartans form the Gerousia, the city's government.\n\nThe state is all-powerful, and the underclasses of society are terrorised to ensure their loyalty. Such a society requires much time and effort to impose on a city, and the resulting lifestyle (even for the rulers) is hardly pleasant. Innovation is not forthcoming and foreigners do not find the city an attractive prospect. Moreover, due to the strict rules on citizenship, population growth is slow at best, and at worst the population could shrink greatly. It would only be feasible to spread such a way of life among fellow Dorians, who being rough types already would take to it much better than Ionians, but even then the transition would be long and difficult.\n\nIn military terms however the imposition of Syssitia Spartiatika produces the finest Hellenic forces available. Not only can top class Spartan hoplites be produced, but other Perioikoi troops take great heart from the concentrated military complex too.

Taras itself has survived as an outpost of Hellenism among the Italian peoples, and the experience has taught Tarantine kings and their lieutenants how to control a people tightly and survive in harsh conditions. As colonists, the Tarantines have always understood the workings of international commerce, and the Tarantine society certainly fosters this. At the same time, the dominant role of the king means that concern for the welfare of the government will never be lacking - people are usually happy to pay their taxes!\n\nWith the full apparatus of Tarantine royal rule in place, the local military is able to fully serve its ruler.

At the same time, the dominant role of the king means that concern for the welfare of the government will never be lacking - people are usually happy to pay their taxes!\n\nWith the full apparatus of Tarantine royal rule in place, the local military is able to fully serve its ruler.

Oligarchies are formed from the richest landowners of the city, men who are committed to keeping people firmly in their place and who know that they derive their power from the support of the metropolis. Depending upon the size of the city, the oligarchy could be made up of just a handful of rich men or several thousand, but they are always rich. Subject Tyranny\n\nHaving completed their work, the members of the military administration are soon disbanded and a proper government is installed.

The barracks themselves are deliberately imposing to show the world the true might of the state.\n\nThe soldiers live relatively well, although discipline is hard. As a result, the elite trained here are expected to be the finest, bravest soldiers that are sent into battle.

I've seen lots of reports of people not being able to get new buildings to work for Carthaginian culture (luckily I haven't needed to use the culture so just gave up trying it in end). Consensus seems to be that you can add existing buildings to carthaginians (eg. higher levels of public health buildings) if you amend the
    descr_ui_buildings.txt file, but that you can't add entirely new buildings for the culture.

    Not sure why this is if you can add entirely new culture and have buildings working for them - you think we'd be able to figure out what problem with carthaginian is! If desperation sets in I suppose renaming the culture and making sure everything in the add new culture guide is followed might help.

    Oh and just to make you feel better - there is another thing that can happen with attempting to add buildings to them. Try re-naming your map.rwm so game is forced to try and generate a new one, and check if game still loads!

    Thanks, so I'm not the only one

    I've just renamed the carthaginian faction to something else (had to do alot of stuff that wasn't in the guide as well), but somehow, the issue is still there.
    Also followed the guide by adding a completely new culture. Strangely enough, the building I wrote worked just fine for that culture.
    What I'll do now, is rewrite my building code. It sounds to me like there's a small bug in the code, which doesn't appear when starting or playing the game, but does make a winxp error message pop up when you close.
    If that still doesn't help, I'll avoid using that culture slot from now on.

    EDIT:
    WOW, found the problem. You mentioned descr_ui_buildings.txt, so I opened that.
    It makes the carthaginian faction take its pictures from two other cultures, eastern and egyptian:
    lookup_variants
    {
    carthaginian eastern
    carthaginian egyptian

    eastern egyptian
    greek roman
    After deleting either one of the lines I've marked in red, the game amazingly enough worked flawlessly. Something for the guides...
    Of course the missing building UI pics must be copied into the carthaginian culture folder, but that's a small price.

    That's interesting Nero. Neither myself or any others (that I know of) have been able to get carthaginian to accept new buildings (despite playing around with the DUB file), although I never actually thought to remove anything (only to add) but I wonder now if Egyptian was breaking the priority of folders and causing the kick back to menu...hmmm..

    If this is so, then well done!

    Can anyone confirm this?

    Actually I never got a kickback to the menu.
    Either a windows error message when closing the application, which happened if I added the building to carthaginian, or no ctd if I didn't.

    I think it's the double redirect to the Egyptian folder which caused the problem.
    Carthaginian > Egyptian
    Carthaginian > Eastern > Egyptian

    The code in my first post should work on vanilla RTW 1.5, in combination with that change to the DUB file, so anyone could try and confirm my solution.

    You said removing either line worked, if you removed the carthaginian egyptian line do you still need to move the UI pics around since the redirect should still find it in the egyptian ui folder via carthaginian->eastern->egyptian?

    Yes, you should. The game doesn't actually use that double redirect, unfortunately. But that's a small price, if it means you can add buildings.

    Gah. Server for forum seems to be acting up - lost my whole response here.

    Second try: This is the first time I've seen this thread. It's an interesting issue that you've raised and seemingly solved. In EB we sort of got lucky and avoided it by doing a big culture swap where that second 'redirect' line in the ui txt file was removed. Otherwise we'd have been having the same problem of course since we've added a lot of buildings for carthage. Good work figuring it out and posting on it!

    As *no one* has every informed me of this and many have had the problem we may assume no one read your post, Nikolai, or undertood it - but kudos to getting to the heart of the matter there, a year ago!

    I had asked for *all* such research/discoveries to be posted to my EDB thread but I understand that that is a bit of an ideal I guess.

    If that sort of thing is missed at an organized site like the Org, just imagine what is missed when TWC enters the equation

    I long ago stopped updating TWC tutorials because I just don't have time to maintain tutorials on both sites.

    I do not suppose it will happen but this is one reason I'd like the Org and TWC to have a research/wiki etc. forum which is sort of shared - somehow :hmmm:

    LOL - yes, I could have put it in the EDB Guide and prevented modders from being kicked this past year or so....

    But then modders deserve a good kick every now and again
