I'm posting the beginning of the Papal States character list. As far as first names are concerned, I think its best to use only latinized names of popes, since this is the onc character that everyone is always interested in. The generals for the Papal States will receive these popish names too, but theres nothing we can do about that. Besides there are so few generals for the Papal States, it shouldnt matter much anyway.
I've listed all the names for latin popes from about 1550 to the beginning of the church. I think this is ok because the Papacy has a strong tradition of using names from very early Popes. Thus, in the game we can assume that each Pope could use a name from earlier Popes that were never historically chosen by actual medieval Popes. It just depended on the person, so all historical papal names are game:

I'd restrict the names of the Popes starting from about 800. Earliest names are roman names, then most Popes came from the eastern Empire and they were of greek origin so those names were never used anymore in the timeframe we're considering.
Actually they just choosed commoners' names used in Tuscany in late middle-age.
What do you think of my idea of only using Papal names for first names? That means the generals and other characters (diplomats, merchants) will have Pope names too. But, I think most people don't pay attention to those charaters in the case of the Papal States. Since we have to chose, I would rather the lowly characters get misnamed and the Popes get correct names. The Popes are such a big part of the game after all... Thoughts?

Personally I'd use the full papal name; if not for historical correctness at least for a greater mood and feel, it's basically the difference of reading:
Pope Severinus
and
Pope Benedict XII
I'd keep the full nomenclature, even the numerical part is OK because they aren't given number according to order but according to how many of the same name have appeared before.

These are their "regnal" names, which I believe they used in formal situations such as excommunicating us bad players. These will be the only male first names in the game. Any objections?
I may be wrong but shouldent you include all pope names even leading up to modern times. I thought that when you became pope you had to choose a name based on your favourite saint or previous pope thus any saint form the pre medieval period is perfectly acceptable and accurate. Just becasue a name wasnet in the vouge doesnt mean some of our "alternate" popes couldent chose them
thus
Pope Names Medieval
Aaron
Abban
Abdas
Abdecalas
Abdon
Abraham
Acathius
Acca
Adeodatus
Adrian
Agapitus
Agatho
Alban
Alcuin
Alfred
Ambrose
Anacletus
Anastasius
Anicetus
Antheros
Athanasius
Augustine
That is most of the names in a do you want me to continue?
This is how I initially felt. However, most of the names not used during the Medieval period were previous Greek Papal names. I think it would be too much of a stretch to include these names. However, many of the older names are already on the list anyway.
Does the numeral follow strict order? It would not be cool to have a Gregorius XI after a Gregorius XII has appeared.
Unfortuantely it is impossible, we just have to live with the fact that Gregorius IX may succeed Gregorius XI, but most people don't even remember the last pope's name when the successor is declared.
Oh well, one can't have everything. The current names are waaay better than the previous ones, it is worth accepting the glitches.
for myself, i've added foreign first names in medieval latin; you know, pretending someone come from wherever to come and work for the pope. i noticed no one posted anything with regard to last names or bynames. i'm looking for names of noble families, and have found a few. here are some bynames i've used:
Coxus, "the Lame"
Calvus, "the Bald"
Iustus, "the Just"
Mendicus, "the Beggar"
Flavus, "the Golden", "the Blond"
Rufus, "the Red" (hair)
Foedus, "the Ugly"
Faber, "the Smith"
also, again pretending that people were coming and going, i threw in some Achaicus, Graecus, Anglicus, Normannus, Siculus and such. when i have enough to replace the lot, i'll post them for whoever's interested.
