I'd like the Danish names (like the others) to be faction accurate and be as close to the original names as possible (i.e., no anglicizations of Scandinavian names or bynames). However, I can only do this if you guys who speak the language tell me what's right and what's not. The most I can do is put the files together so that the new names work in-game. Whether the names are right or not... I just don't know enough to know. I appreciate any help with the Danish names already posted here. Please tell me if their are any other crap names here. For bynames I'd rather see more locative bynames (i.e., more Danish towns used as last names rather than entire regions such as Pommern).

And what about Swedish names? Should I include any of those?

Ok, attached to the bottom of this post is my list of Danish character names using the info Atterdag and Vindahl posted. Please check through it and make comments and suggestions. Do I need to add any names? Do any need to be taken out? Anything --just let me know and I'll fix it up.

Also, Vindahl posted some noble family names from "all over Scandinavia". What names out of this list are Danish? Let me know, and I'll add them as well. Right now I'm trying to use ONLY Danish names. These are the names I need help identifying:

    Default Re: DANISH Character Names

Sorry for the long hold up by me, have just returned home from a trip to Greenland...

It is difficult to trace "noble-names" from the MTW2 period. Many of the "real" nobles came much later and would be to far ahead of this time period.
Thats why I suggest that it is easier to just place -sen or -son after every male name, these names werent considered less noble in those times, but were telling about the persons herritage.
Another posibility is to add -gaard/gård, -feldt, -berg, -holm, or -høj to some placenames. Persons with a name like "Storgaard" would for examble mean that this person comes from a noblefamily havind home in a "huge farm given by the king." not sure how to translate in english, but this place could for examble have the name Storgaard. The familiy then takes the name as surname. That is also a possibility, perhaps better than the other names, but I am letting you decide before going deeper into this!
If we give every nobleman a finer surname, it gives the problem of making ahistorical problems. Cause the noblenames in those times were belonging more or less to really great nobles who often would be crowned in Scandivania, meaning that we will end up with a lot of royal-surnames who just walk about and have no real power. The more common noble would have some of the names I posted earlier or a -sen name.
In these times familymembers would not that often only find loyalty in one court. Many shifted sides and moved to other kingdoms to serve foreign leaders. It is also obvious that when playing Denmark you will conquer the rest of Sweden and Norway so including other Scandivanian names would be a fine way to represent the other kingdoms of the North.
But if I should pick out the Danish surnames it would be...
    Falk
    Darre
    Bjørn
    Kiil
    Lam
    Munk
    Bille
    Østby
    Kamp
    Bolt
    Galle
    Rømer
    Birk
    Sparre
    Ravn
    Due
    Sølvager
    Berg
    Holm
    Lund

    About the bold names...

Some of these I have found as persons in Denmark, not always as born in Denmark.

Broder or Bror is a Swedish name, but it was in use in Denmark too, in those periods where Denmark had conquered Sweden.

Same thing with Atle, which actually is a royal name, not a slavename.
Same thing again with Ring, Revil, Skate and Vitolf.

Names as Ejlif, Gnupa, Guthorm, Hårik, Odd, Skorre, Yngve and Østmar are more Norwegian, but still at times used in Denmark. (Not as common as the Swedish names though)

Loter is a more german name, it was used in Denmark up until 1150'es.

Benedikt, Hemming, and Vagn were used up into the 1200 hundreds, and Hemming was even used further...
Aslak and Rørik is used up until 1100.

Frovin, Gorm, Hagbard, Homod, Lefdag, Skjalm, Skjold, Snie, Unne, Vermund and Viglet I can agree that they probably are a bit "vikingage-alike".
Still some of them are important Royal names, that could be great to keep alive.

Thanks for input Vindahl. I think at this point though I want to leave out the Swedish and Norwegian names as much as possible. On this faction I want to be a bit of purist, and the list is already so long without them. However, this is only in relation to the first release. I'm going to have to revisit this faction later and think on whether to include foreign names. At any rate, your notes here are recorded for when I do get back to them.

I have researched some more in the Danish Noble Names. And as I mentioned earlier these names are more like suffixes, that were granted them. These names have root in proffesions, animals, daily things or symbolic meanings.
It was not until 1526 that the Danish King Frederik I. made it a law that all noblefamilies should carry on with their surname generation after generation and not change it again and again over time.. I guess it is a bit similar to Sweden and Norway.
But here are some more Danish noblesurnames I have found, here you go...

    Hvid
    Hvas
    Skeel
    Friis

    Gyldenstjerne
    Bård
    Holck
    Marsvin
    Oxe
    Galt
    Gedde
    Mule

And here some more major and minor Medieval townnames and placenames from Denmark that should be used...

Wow, this is a lot of stuff. Any recommendations on what absolutely should be included in the list? I will add most of it to the list and see how big it gets. I don't want to exceed 500 names, but this could get us there (and that is a good thing!).

I dont think I can pick out some that are better than others!
But some of the names remind a bit of each other, and some sound more French, Spanish or German, so those I would recommand to get rid of. ( If you need to! )
    I suggest you can remove...

About the Of - Names, I have taken cities and places from all over Denmark to mix it up. So, pick whatever you think sound good. To keep the represented areas in, I suggest that you just take away, every 3rd-, or 5th- or 10th-name.

    @ Atterdag and Vindahl

Here is the second version of the Danish character names. Again, I'm staying with the purist method, trying to avoid any names that aren't Danish...

This list is very large now (573 names total); it's the largest new list we have. However, I'm attempting to keep these lists around 500 total names (the average vanilla list weighs in at around 230 names). So, we could eliminate 73 names. Could you guys go through this list and recommend what names we could eliminate? I'm thinking of cutting a lot of the -sen bynames in particulr, since that group is bigger than it needs to be. Any advice on which out of the -sen names I should cut?

    @Vindahl

I decided to not include any of the late era Danish bynames you posted in post #11; but I did add the locative bynames you posted (thanks for that). Many of those names, as you said, were foreign. However, if there are a few names in there that you think really should be in the list, let me know and I'll add a few.

We are almost finished with the Danes! Any last bits of advice for this list are welcome!

    Good job so far...
I am not going to do a complete detailed annolysis of your work, but I will post some comments here below...

There are two "Bille" names, and two "Magnussen" names and two "Sparre" names and two "Sunesen", and two "Ulfstand"...

There is also two of "Af Halland" and "Af Jylland" and "Af Bornholm" and "Af Fyn" and "Af Lolland" and "Af Ribe" and "Af Roskilde" and "Af Sjælland" and "Af Slesvig"
There is three times the name "Af Viborg" and "Af Vordingborg"

You can remove "Af Skaane" as well, as it is the same as Skåne.

And the "LundHvid" name should be 2 sepperat, like this Lund, Hvid

The firstname "Eskil" can be removed, as "Eskild" is present!
Same thing, remove "Gotfred" as the name "Godfred" is present!
Same thing, remove "Halvdan" as the name "Halfdan" is present!

You can also remove the name "Ler", I guess its too old!
The name "Sigar" can also be removed.

You can remove the female name "Freya" as the name "Freja" is present.

And the names Hanssen, Jenssen, Magnussen, Mogenssen, Nielssen and Eliassen, should only be spelled with one "S", like this; Hansen, Eliasen, Jensen, Magnusen, Mogensen, Nielsen

The names below I suggest we get rid off...

    Abelsen
    Aggesen
    Agnarsen
    Alfsen
    Algudsen
    Angelsen
    Asksen
    Aslaksen
    Atlesen
Bielke (There is already the name Bjælke. Its just 2 different spellings!)
    Bosen
    Clementsen
    Dansen
    Einarsen
    Ejlifsen
    Ejstensen
    Emmiksen
    Ernstsen
    Esbernsen
Eskilsen ( The name Eskildsen is present!)
    Fridlevsen
    Frodesen
    Frovinsen
    Gerbrandsen
    Glumsen
    Gnupasen
    Godvinsen
Gotfredsen ( The name Godfredsen is present! )
Halvdansen ( The name Halfdansen is present!)
    Hardeknutsen
    Helgesen
    Hjalmarsen
    Homodsen
    Hugletsen
    Humblesen
    Jarmeriksen
    Kristjernsen
    Lausen
    Lefdagsen
    Lersen
    Lotersen
    Malthesen
    Oddsen
    Østmarsen
    Ralfsen
    Revilsen
    Ringsen
    Rolfsen
    Røriksen
    Sigarsen
    Skatesen
    Skjalmsen
    Skjoldsen
    Skorresen
    Sniesen
    Stigsen
    Tagesen
    Torbensen
    Uffesen
    Ulfsen
    Unnesen
    Vagnsen
    Vernersen
    Vigletsen
    Vigsen
    Vitolfsen
    Yngvesen

Now, try to edit the list again and come up with a new update on how many names that should be deleted, now that some names were doubled and such.

And Atterdag you are of course welcome to edit this list above, if you do not agree, there are probably other ideas than just my own!

Thanks Vindahl; just the response I was looking for! When Atterdag posts his recommendations I'll finish up the list.
