    I will be doing the Venetian faction. If there is anyone who could give me online sources or other help pertaining to this faction, please post that help here. Thanks!

    Surely, condottiere.

    http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/italian/venice.html

    Read the entire page, there are some name structure information there that might prove very helpful. Also check the links for family names and given names.

    http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/venice14/

    Might be related (or source) to the above page but might have some more material, worth checking out.

    I'll post some more later.

    Excellent, thanks. I will be doing this one blind, so say a prayer for me... A Papal benediction would be appropriate ;-)

    EDIT: I've got plenty of male names, female names and family names. However, I have very few by names. I am thinking of just creating a "locative" byname for every major town within the Venetian Republic circa 1400. Otherwise, we won't have many bynames for this faction. Can anyonepoint to a source or list some venetian bynames??? Any other ideas for bynames?

    Attached is a work-in-progress list of Venetian names. The male, female, and family names are quite good. However, my trouble is with the by-names. Many Venetians did not use them. Anyway, I am not sure about the "da" "de" "di" issue. Today, Italians seem to use "di" a lot. In the name from that period, "da" is by far the most common. So I have made them all "da" (except de Pizan). I need someone to confirm that this is correct. Also, any help with Venetian bynames from this period would be great. I'm going to sit on this list for a while...

    The list seems fine. According to some sources i've consulted, the usage of "di" implies the changing of the following name to a "o" termination (as in the patronym "of").

    Example: Maria Alegreza di Nicoletti
    The above would be wrong, either it could be Maria Alegreza Nicoletti or Maria Alegreza di Nicoletto.

    also:

    "In general, grammatically plural forms are usually inherited family names: e.g. Alberti, Dardi, Turri.
    The plural form refers to the family as a whole. For example, a 13th
    century Checo, son of Dardo, was probably known as Checo di Dardo. His
    children might have been known as the Dardi, and that form of the name
    might have been inherited in the 14th century. Of course, the unmodified
    Dardo could also have been inherited as a surname."

    Good. I'm only afraid at this point that some of the "da"s that I have might need to be changed to "de". I'll post this in the mod workshop to see if any Italians might help out...

    Just kidding.

    Yes, that's a good idea, though Venetian names were rather different from modern/contemporary Italian names so you might want to exercise caution.

    Yep, I've already had people complaining about the "t"s being "f"s and the "gi"s being "z"s in my names list. I'm trying to tell them that Venetian names were spelled differently from other italian names of the period... much differently in fact, as the Venetian dialect was very distinct and different from that of Tuscany or parts of NW Italy.

    If you need some more historical names for italian nobility there's another link (http://www.sardimpex.com/) but they're not sorted by "location" and some are of "imported" nobilty so you need to read their history (in italian), etc. Definitively not easy to use but interesting beside the gaming interest.

    From the little I know about Venice (Norwich's book), I would agree. But then again, Italians worked on these names :hmmm:

    don't get me wrong, i didn't mean to come across like i was that sure.

    i'm still flipping though a few books i have and double checking spelling on the net when i can. a lot of what i find is standard italian, so it can be difficult at times, unless i assume the alternate spelling is correct and then search for that and see where those people come from. i've found a few documents and a venetan dictionary that have given me an small idea, and even the sca site referenced mentions the x for s and z for gi. i'm really just looking for more alternatives or even minor variations so that each faction has more unique names and less in common.

    Although this is a small suggestion, add the name Maurizio, maybe for all of the Italian factions (Sicily, Milan, and others if included) in addition to Venice? There was historically a Doge Maurizio of Venice.

    Default Re: VENETIAN Character Names

    About venetians name allow me to say something:
    a)in venetian language "d"[do] and "z"[zoo] are interchangeable, e.g. gioco(play) can be Dugo OR zugo, keep that in mind.
    b)Andrea is not a female name
    c) Venetians have a "3rd" sound for s, like polish sz that can became a "th"[three] e.g Szio->Thio; even if before an ʊ[like u in beatiful] only th is used
    d) in venetians you have only one "double" consonant, and is ss to distinguish "soo" fromm "zoo", so no giovanni but giovani
    e) l [light] does not exist in venetians: a/o/u (l )a/o/u --> a/o/u e a/o/u; e/i (l )e/i/a/o/u--> e/i e/i/a/o/u/, if it's the last letter [in tel], then you say "r"[right] in tel--> in ter.
    (some place in Veneto have l in final positions pronounced as l, to be honest) so Belluno--> Bełuno, pronounced Beuno
    f)often light "g" [gem] turns in a "J"[yet], so Giacomo became Jacopo(or jacomo but that's a rare form) or z Giorgio--> zorzo
    g) "C" sometimes is used for sound "s"[city], i suggest the use of the spanish/french ç, for example Bonifacio-->bonifasio, even if both pronounce are accepted.
    h) Antonio--> Antognio or toni, ventians ni+vowels became gni+vowel,

    P.S.
    What i wrote here is not took from some school book/site but is how the farmer(and i) speak and wrote venetians (i'm 40 mins of car to reach Venice, 20 for Treviso)
    P.P.S.
    The most important thing is to delete all the couple of consonant, the others things i said are less important
